- The 9th generation Audi A4 is all set to launch in the Indian market in a couple of weeks. The A4 has a 1.4-litre engine that dishes out 150BHP & 250NM of torque. The engine is mated to a 7-speed S tronic gearbox that propels the new A4 from 0-100 in 8.5 seconds. Will Audi India be able to successfully set a new benchmark in this segment? Let's find out!

Skoda superb is a much better option! This seems a gr8 car, but only 150bhp and 250nm? My laura is faster than it and does 0-100 in 8.1 seconds!

I guess the 1.4 TSI is from the Octavia too. Underpowered for an Audi.
My polo GT TDI Churns out 275 NM of max torque.But Still I think in terms of Build Quality and Handling Audi is Far Better than any other brand.It tops the chart of Consumer satisfaction.
+Rudra Shivgan yes diesel does better torque figures. Even the Octavia 1.8 TSI has 180 HP. I don't think the difference in handling between the Octavia and the A4 is enough to make up for the 40hp gap in power. Can't beat the interior and feel of the Audi though.
Sir, the first generation was called Basis (Audi 80, B1, 1972-1978)
its got its B nomemclature because of the use of intialal 5 genrations were based on the Volkswagen Group B platform, was just preceded by audi 80 name

+Zubin Gautam people in india rarely buy an engine bigger than 1.2l with a petrol engine... its not about the performance.... petrol engines do not sell much in the class in which the Audi competes...

It's a lovely looking car. Very practical for people looking at the badge and who prefer being chauffeured around.

Now, to the question that Ten asked. This car launched with the moniker Audi 80 (based on hp ratings) in the 70s.

i have always preferred the A4 over the 3 series but after the XE came along i preferred the XE but now Audi have stepped The game up again! and nice work guys explaining the small changes! and its funny that they still write 3.0 for a 1.4 car😐

Got your hint when you specifically mentioned that the current A4 is the 9th Gen and is 44-45 years old, according to which the B1 fits the timeline perfectly.

Audi 80 was the first generation of Audi A4 which was introduced in 1966 and it lasted till 1996 but then they introduced the new name which is more familiar to us which is AUDI A4.

Well, I wonder if Joe king himself would be able to explain Audi as a brand, in a way better than I can. Met him personally at the Audi A3 launch in Mariott Delhi and he was amazed to see my enthusiasm for Audi cars. A6 being my dream vehicle --> gift to my parents.
For the answer, Audi A4 was called Audi 80 ( Codenamed B1 , internally called the type 8D) and was based on the Volkswagen's B5 platform.
The A4 has been built in five generations and is based on the Volkswagen Group B platform. The first generation A4 succeeded the Audi 80. The automaker's internal numbering treats the A4 as a continuation of the Audi 80 lineage, with the initial A4 designated as the B5-series, followed by the B6, B7, B8 and the B9. The B8 and B9 versions of the A4 are built on the Volkswagen Group MLB Platform shared with many other Audi models and potentially one Porsche model within Volkswagen Group.
I own the current generation A4 S-line black edition & believe me the driving experience is one hell of a firecracker!Fuel economy is the best in class.
Only problem I've faced till date is cornering when exceeding 160kmph.Hope I'll see this sorted in the upcoming model after I get my hands on this in pune!

The answer to your question is AUDI Fox/80 (B5)
A is the bottom level for Audi cars. The A4 is the cheapest of the 4 series.
After A comes S, for Sport. The S4 is the same size as the A4, but comes with better features standard, and has a larger more powerful engine making it faster.
After S comes RS, RennSport (Racing Sport). The RS4 is the top of the line 4 series, it has the largest/most powerful engine and the best interior. A lot of RS models don't make it to the US market (we only get the RS5 and RS7 right now IIRC).
Not all series follow this convention. There is an A8 and an S8, but no RS8. Audi builds the R8, but it is nothing like the A8 at all.
The Q models are the SUVs and crossovers.

Audi A4 was called Audi F103 when it was first launched in the year 1966 which was based on DKW F102 but with an all new range of four stroke engines developed in conjunction with Daimler-Benz.

The first generation of Audi A4(B5) came in 1994, but since you mentioned "Around 44/45 years now", I believe the answer to the question is, Audio 80, also called as Audi Fox!
The first model was launched simply as the Audi, later being renamed the "Audi 72" Which Is Also Known as "Audi F103" series, based on the DKW F102.

It's the Audi 80, based on the B1 platform. But i'm not too sure if you can call it as the predecessor to the A4 since the development of the A4 only began in 1988.
