    I hate how, if they had kept Ryan in up to this episode, he could've made a call of duty joke about how they were all respawning and it would have been his most well characterised moment ever

      I laughed at this because it's sadly so true. I liked Ryan, I just wanted character development for him and Orphan 55 was the PERFECT OPPORTUNITY for it! And I'm still mad that didn't happen.

    Daleks missing in certain circumstances should be fine but in this case they're in narrow hallways and now equipped with rapid fire laser blasters which mean it should be effectively impossible at a certain range for them to miss.

    At this point, if Chibnall era characters were written well it would be character assassination as that would be less consistent than what we’ve had for 3 series.

    1:11:56 Remember when the episode "Dalek" showed that the dalek's midsection could rotate to let it shoot in different directions? Chris Chibnall doesn't.

    • @TheSmart-CasualGamer
      @TheSmart-CasualGamer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Chris Chibnall also doesn't remember that Daleks know what lifts are. They had them in their cities on Skaro. THEY USE THE WORD LIFT IN EVOLUTION OF THE DALEKS.

    16:05 another solution to that problem is to have the heroes escape in a way that creates a new obstacle. Like in World War Three when the Doctor escapes the Slitheen but in doing so gets trapped in the cabinet room, or in Smith & Jones when he stops the Slab but in doing so breaks the sonic screwdriver

    The history of the Dalek props in Nu-Who is becoming very strange and interesting to me. Pre-Chibnall, there were known to be eleven (I think) bronze Daleks. By the time of Revolution, I think only five remained (including the one built for Dalek which lives at BBC Birmingham). The others have either been destroyed, auctioned or modified (e.g. Rusty).
    Of the five in Revolution, only three were actually built for TV (they’re originally from Asylum of the Daleks and were the resident Daleks at the DW Experience). The other two are actually touring models from the Symphonic Spectacular show which might explain why some of the Chibnall models look a bit shoddier than the previous two eras.
    Quite why the Birmingham Dalek and BBC Salford Dalek (which was built for The Stolen Earth) were not called in instead is unknown.

    • @dalekbumps
      @dalekbumps 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The bronze Daleks used in the Chibnall era are all built to the same specifications as the original bronze Dalek props. These props were made by This Planet Earth, who had previously supplied props for Asylum of the Daleks and The Magician's Apprentice/The Witches Familiar

    the funniest part of this episode to me is that as far as I can tell they gave the daleks gatling guns purely to facilitate another scene where they use the "just duck under the bullets" solution that was already bad enough when they did it once with the sniper bots with ryan and graham

  • @greghawkins59

    I'd love if the first life was drawn out much longer and it wasn't known there was a time loop, everyone's deaths are more drawn out and tragic/sudden and the doctor gets really vengeful but gets killed, then there's the few too many seconds of blank screen before the 2nd life starts

  • @NPCarlsson
    @NPCarlsson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    With regards to your last point (before the Wallace and Gromit one), I totally agree. I think that's where Chibnall is failing. He's an ideas guy, but the way the episodes are written, how they're paced, the dialogue, all of it feels like it was written by someone who doesn't know how to write an episode of a TV show.
    You can notice a really difference in the 3 eras of the revived show.
    RTD had pretty safe ideas, but executed them almost flawlessly.
    Moffat had some pretty out-there ideas and... mostly executed them well, sometimes not so much.
    Chibnall has had a good mixture of basic ideas and very outlandish ideas and just doesn't pull either of them off well.

    Here's my problem with Thasmin, it's insanely toxic, the Doctor is so secretive and manipulative to Yaz. Yaz has been kept in the dark so much that she literally doesn't know why Flux even happened in the first place because she doesn't know about the Timeless Child stuff or the Division or the Doctor's secret backstory so for her Flux was just some weird cosmic thing that just kind of happened for no reason. But despite all of that the Doctor just expects Yaz to trust her even though the Doctor clearly doesn't trust Yaz. Oh and there was no real build up to it and it's way too late in this era to be exploring Yaz and the Doctor's relationship, we only have like two specials left before we have a new Doctor and Tardis crew.

    It's always frustrating as a Doctor Who fan when you realise what the writers SHOULD have done. I just had one of those moments, and it involves Thasmin of all things.
    So, rather than having Dan hamfistedly reveal it to both characters (but really the audience) they should have done it with the Doctor regenerating *in* the time loop by surviving a glancing shot (albeit with fatal injuries like in _Stolen Earth)_ then have the new Doctor fight the Daleks and die heroically, but revert to Thirteen when the loop resets. The best part is that they don't even need to use the same actor for the actual 14th Doctor. You can have Thirteen explain how this works at the end of the episode, since it sets her up very well to broach the subject of her eventual death. But most importantly, it sets up Yaz to tell the Doctor how, even after staring her own death in the face, watching the Doctor regenerate was worse than that, and how "the worst thing of all was that I didn't get to tell you goodbye."
    The Doctor tries to brush it off with "I'll still be me, won't I? Even after I regenerate."
    ...prompting Yaz to say that no, she has fallen in love with _this particular version_ of the Doctor (and it would be especially pertinent if the 14th Doctor cameo had been a man). And perhaps Yaz accidentally uses the word "love" in relation to Thirteen, tries to downplay it, only for the Doctor to see through it and either let her down gently or at least try to reciprocate the attraction.
    Heck, if it were written at least somewhat competently, I'd have to admit even *I* might ship it after watching a scene like that.

    39:10 I like how Stu says "They wouldn't go that far" (having a character who has experienced death say that there is no afterlife, when you're dead, you're dead, that's it)
    Except they have. Repeatedly. Torchwood's first episode did, with the 'resurrection gauntlet' used on murder victims. It was even a plot point that those who died and were brought back were traumatized by this revelation. Sorry 'anyone who believes in a religion', Doctor Who says no.

    • @jonathandear4914
      @jonathandear4914 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I feel like thats more due to the nature of Torchwood as a spinoff show, allowing to dive into further topics with more grimness, mainline show probably wouldn't be able to do it, or do it more subtle if they wanted too, either way it would need to be handled with care.

    • @PlatinumAltaria
      @PlatinumAltaria 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Counterpoint: a lot of people who believe in an afterlife say that you don't get to go there until you're dead for real: if you're gonna get resurrected in the future you don't go to heaven yet. So technically it's a mystery, and also irrelevant.

    • @whiskeyhound

    That idea of the only the heroes remembering the time loop was executed decently in Edge of Tomorrow, where Tom Cruise’s character only manages to survive a battle by learning as much as he can over the course of several deaths. Maybe Eve could’ve started with the same setup but then something happens that causes the Daleks to start remembering the previous loops, raising the stakes.

      I thought it’d be an interesting new twist on the Groundhog Day loop. Ah well.

    Human Nature/The Family of Blood is a brilliant story about how the doctor relates to the concept of romantic relationships. Full Fat Video’s video on this story explores this in great detail. Not only is the thasmin garbage at the end of this special insultingly and cheaply written by its own merits, but it spits in the face of what we learned about the doctor’s character in the 3rd series.

      @@gallohalt I was thinking the same thing honestly, but I do think Aisling Bea is a delight and kind of stole the show on this one. It was really nice to finally see a secondary character rightfully and strongly call out the Doctor on her nonsense. It's a dynamic I've missed.

    Series 11: Eh, it's not as good as it used to be
    Series 12: Fuck right off, what has he done with the show?
    Series 13: Sure, why not. It's fine. I don't care enough to hate it anymore

    1:24:30 Daleks are not AI. Adding nonsensical data in their training set will not automatically cause them to generate incorrect results. This scene was insufferably smug in having outsmarted the Daleks, considering it made its Daleks stupider than today's AI.

  • @leipherd8118

    Impressive that you keep this to just what is narratively weak, rather than broaden it out to basic dumb errors. There's a point where Sarah looks at her phone after her mom calls at 23;56 and it shows 23;51!
    Nick is going to permanently die, then he isn't, both for vague reasons.
    They have 50 seconds to get from the basement to the 5th floor AND BACK, AND EXIT before the Daleks shoot the carefully placed items....
    If you are doing a time loop story but don't care about the implications of said time loop you should probably not do a time loop story....

  • @Glace-gone

    rels have been shown as equal to a second basically every time theyve been on screen. i can only find people saying its eqal to 1.2 seconds but not anything to actually confirm that.

    • @whiskeyhound
      @whiskeyhound 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I checked the wiki, seems to be based off some timer shown in an early episode that was laid out like an instrument panel version of a clock, but the prop apparently predates dr who, so seems like the rel = 1.2 seconds is nonsense that people just came up with because there was 50 numbers in a circle on something counting down.

    In The Halloween Apocalypse the doctor and Yaz both fall onto a bed in their first scene, as a joke I said "space lesbians" because I thought it'll be stupid to think that's good development. Then throughout the Flux it became a running joke that any time Yaz or the doctor would linger looking at each other, we'd shout "space lesbians!". Then each time we said it, we slowly progessively all were thinking "Oh, Chris is actually gonna force this, isn't he?"
