Very rare Priest recording from the 1977 "SIN AFTER SIN" Tour!!! SETLIST: Intro Let Us Prey/ Call For The Priest Victim Of Changes Diamonds And Rust The Ripper Sinner Genocide Starbreaker
Damn…opening with Let Us Prey/Call For The Priest. Just imaging seeing this opening band you know nothing about in 1977 and having them first hit you over the head with THAT.
This was the Municipal Auditorium REO Speedwagaon headlined, Judas Priest was second on the bill, with Journey(Pre-Steve Perry) opening the concert. I recall this concert (I was high as a kite), but still remember the night. REO was touring for the "Live/You Get What you Play For"....Journey had just released "Look into the Future" and opened with "Midnight Dreamer" song. Greg Rolie on vocals. Yes sir...good times!

They opened a tour with UFO a block from my house in late winter or spring 1978. At the YVC gymn in Yakima, WA, we were priveleged to witness a shift in Heavy music and over the top bombastic performance. It was loud enough for the Seattle Colliseum and tight enough for a local bar! KK Downing came out looking like Elric of Melnibone (an albino fantasy character). This concert was the 1st time I heard them..was completing AIT in San Antonio at the time...damn a long time ago..I was a instant fan & love Priest to this day!
This is awesome!!!!!!!!! Thank you Joe Anthony (and Lou Roney) of KMAC AM (and later KISS FM) for introducing San Antonio to real rock music back in the early mid-70's!! NO City in the USA rocked like S.A. during the 70's and 80's, thanks to "The Godfather".
Rene Lagunas Cool. I lived in S.A. from 83-90. Remember KISS FM well. I graduated from Madison H.S. in 85, and went to John Wood middle school. Not in that order.Lol What school did you attend?
Try having your mother uproot you and your sister from the El Paso area, and being able to listen to an FM Radio station playing Hard Rock and moving to Schulemburg Tx, in 1972-'73 . Joe Anthony and Lou Roney saved me (at 15) from 'Hicksville'. I have NEVER FORGOTTEN the musical education in Hard Rock and Metal that the Godfather and KMAC-AM Radio brought to my life (and when we moved to Corpus Christi in '75, the concerts. Joe Anthony's love for Rock benefited Corpus, too!)
I remember lived in San Antonio, I believe my older brother saw Judas Priest warm up for REO Speed wagon I was 13 at the time that was 1977, I remember my mother told me that his microphone looked like a scepter. I rember the the first time I heard victim of changes it was KISS 99.5 fm. And those vocals just blew me away! Time flies! I thought it was Black Sabbath at first. Remember Mahoghany Rush, Moxy and all those good bands.
Thanks Rock 'n Metal Concerts. we all appreciate it. RIGHT ? RIGHT !!!!!!!!! I saw Priest in Nov. 2014 in Glendale Az. and they did 4 encores and Rob said the Priest Will Be Back
One of the golden years! Wish I could travel back in time to witness this! Rob’s range in pitch is just insane. The widest range in the world though?? I wouldn’t be surprised
It's true. Priest was a last minute addition to a Bill Graham Day on the Green concert in Oakland headlined by Zeppelin and also featuring Rick Derringer. Priest replaced the disbanded UFO. Famously, John Bonham and Zep's manager Peter Grant got into a fight with Bill Graham's people and charges were filed. Zeppelin never played America again, When Plant heard UFO wasn't going to play, he told Graham to go get those Brummies (Priest).
I would've left after Priest walked off the stage. I had plans to go to the ill fated Ozzy show at the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando. they were the band playing before Foreigner who was the headliner, so I was going to see Ozzy and Randy and leave after they played. unfortunately I didn't get to see them.
Scorpions did matched and surpassed them in those yrs, compare the set lists at the time no fanatism. Judas Priest is my favorite metal band Scorpions are my fav band , both were really heavy at the time
I am SO happy with this post. I saw Judas Priest in Corpus Christi at least twice and 1977 has to be the first time. Corpus Christi benefited from the groups that came to San Antonio and made the trip to Corpus. Joe'The Godfather'Anthony was responsible for putting South Texas on the Hard Rock and Metal highway Thanks for posting this. I remember all the groups that I saw, but didn't keep all the ticket stubs and am always trying to figure out the EXACT year. At 62, the best years of my life, musically,(1970's)blur on exactly what year I saw a certain group(and 1975-1980 had alot of tours going). Some I can nail, but dated videos like this one are great.
By the cymballs sound i think is Simon Phillips, one of his few shows... Analising the Sin After Sin songs arrangments... Les Binks changed it a little.
According to Downing's autobiography, Binks quit over a money dispute with the label. He wanted to get paid, they were like, "You're just the drummer," and he fucked off and left the band hanging just before the tour promoting Unleashed in the East.
This was amazing. I wish I were there too. You folks have impressive memories. I have to say that this version of Victim Of Changes has to be the closest to the album version that I've ever heard them play live. It's one of my favorites by them, but in later years they always seemed to play it faster almost like they had to rush through it or something. This version was life changing for me!
It was at the Municipal, I was there. Very unusual look and style. Tipton had a Marshall blow, lost his temper backstage. Kicked over a bunch of chairs. Next time was Joe Freeman, I recorded it. Wanted this one more, pre-Exciter.......THANK YOU
Yeah, they looked like a low rent version of Queen with that look, geez Tipton lost it, yikes sounds like a guy I wouldn't wanna be around, still one of my favorite guitarists though.
This was the bands first album for Columbia Records in 1977 produced by Roger Glover( deep purples bass guitarist) with Simon Philips on drums who didn’t get to tour extensively with them being replaced by Les binks. They played with on Led Zeppelin’s last Ill fated tour the same year when Robert plants son died.
doesn't get better than this. This is one of the few live shows even available from the Sin after Sin tour! I'm almost tempted to attempt my skills to remaster the audio!
My ticket for the Paramount Theater in Asbury Park, NJ 1979 was $7.00... AWEOME show. Hell Bent for Leather... They played with Twisted Sister a local act at thew time we used to see them every Thursday at the Fountain Casino in NJ...
Thank you metalinvader888!! It's a blast from the past to hear Joe Anthony, the DJ at 99.5 KISS, introducing the band at the San Antonio Convention Center Arena. Once I called him at the station and requested him to play anything off side 2 of Sin after Sin - He ended up playing the whole thing!
YEAH!! The "British Steel" tour was my first concert, too! Def Leppard "on through the night" and Scorpions "animal magnetism" rounded out the bill...SICK SHOW...remember it like yesterday!
Yeah, thanks for that man. I live in San Antonio and I couldn't think of any open air stadiums in SA back then... answered a question of mine, so thanks.
I would really like younger listeners to fully understand that this was before heavy metal was a full fledged concept. This is proto-metal but we didn't know it or call it that at the time. It was "hard rock" then. I saw Priest on this tour when they opened for Foghat. I thought they were really good and noticeably a different style from Foghat. It was meaner and sleeker but simply a distilled kind of hard rock. It sounded cheaper and less sophisticated but still really cool. Then "metal" coagulated a couple of years later into a more commonly identifiable term and Priest got folded in with that movement in which they mostly pioneered and were already leaders.
+NelsonClick Hey, NelsonClick: Lots of what you say is indeed correct. If I might add, the term "heavy metal" did precede this--Sabbath--but you are essentially correct. Priest was certainly considered a front runner of "heavy metal" and were years ahead of their time. "Stained Class" should have been huge, but timing, you know... I don't want a fight with you, as we both dig a terrific band; I just simply recall the term "heavy metal" being applied to Sabbath (and Purple & Heep as well). I must say I really like these renditions as well as this was before Priest became obsessed with speed (even on "Unleashed in the East"). That is SO COOL that you got to see JP before they peaked :)
Really love the tempo of Victim of changes, and all the tunes! Unleashed in the east released the next year sounded so rushed! What a gem! Thanks a million!
Was at the 1983 US Festival too in San Bernadino, Cali. Glen Helen Park over 500,000 people those tix were only $20.00 a day for dozens of killer bands including Priest, Bowie, VH, Scorps, too many to mention. I still have my stubs for that. All 3 daze, the best trip of my life still. I lived in Miami at the time.

Kat Toudouze-I just found this video and posted the comment that I WONDERED if The Godfather brought them. I knew that I first saw Judas Priest in Corpus Christi around 76-'77(at 62, I remember the bands that I saw, but not the exact year for the concert). Thanks for confirming about Joe Anthony's influence. KMAC-AM Radio, with Joe and Lou Roney, was THE greatest thing I ever heard on AM radio!
12:07 здесь Роб поёт просто космически! Низкий баритон очень ему идёт, надо было в студийной версии Жертвы Перемен в таком стиле петь эту часть песни! Было бы очень мощно!
Still have my Sin After Sin - nothing touched this (short) LP...except Sad Wings of Destiny I suppose. This was the sonic transition from a space-metal thing to hell bent for leather. More plexi than the JCM to come...see KK's metal panel stacks ? and..what a Voice.
I saw day 2 of Day On the Green ....JUDAS PRIEST ....DERRINGER and LED ZEPPELIN! Unbelievable! Judas Priest hooked me right away seeing as Halford could scream like Ian Gillan in his normal singing voice and Two roaring guitars with pounding bass and drums! What a show!
I lived in San Antonio from May of 1979 to July of 1980, and PRIEST came through twice in that short time! I had tickets to see the UNLEASHED IN THE EAST show in 1979, but in the end didn't make it, but had a buddy bring me back a tour shirt (which I still have) Then saw them on the BRITISH STEEL Tour in the spring of 1980 with Def Leppard opening in support of ON THROUGH THE NIGHT. It was my second concert ever. First was ANGEL / MAHOGANY RUSH / HUMBLE PIE / MOTHER'S FINEST a few weeks earlier
From about 76 - 79 (Sin after Sin, Stained Class) Priest had such a great, great sound. With all due respect to the Dave Holland years, this stuff was much better in my opinion. And there are many who just don't know THIS Judas Priest. Can't help but wonder how the band would've fared had Les Binks stayed on.
RockaRollaSadWingsSinner Top3 First 3 done. We all know it... Stain Class and Hell Bent for Leather were fucking right also ... Then the Cash on Sell out for money happened to all the Bands or most of them. Thanks for the early stuff in the 70's we didn't have to listen to the crap they tried to deliver to radio. Haha
Nah quite the contrary, there's a shitload of fans who feel the same, I myself included, and in all fairness, the last great Priest album was British Steel, but even then it don't come close to their 70's material.

+Romulan Rancor yah,i really like dissident agressor;and for sad wings you got ripper;and victom of changes ect. both great albums.
This concert was the 1st time I heard them..was completing AIT in San Antonio at the time...damn a long time ago..I was a instant fan & love Priest to this day!
🎸💁♀️Me too!
You witnessed a very important part of music history.
KMAC/KISS, the Buzzard!!!! I still have my baseball jersey! Long live Joe Anthony & Lou Roney... : )
Rene Lagunas
Cool. I lived in S.A. from 83-90. Remember KISS FM well. I graduated from Madison H.S. in 85, and went to John Wood middle school. Not in that order.Lol What school did you attend?
Vegan Man Don't forget Jabreel Khalid. Best late night DJ ever. Cool guy as well.
I was 7 in San Antonio at the time and going to first grade, amazing how time flies!!! Time fly now, time flies.
I remember
lived in San Antonio, I believe my older brother saw Judas Priest warm up for REO Speed wagon I was 13 at the time that was 1977, I remember my mother told me that his microphone looked like a scepter. I rember the the first time I heard victim of changes it was KISS 99.5 fm. And those vocals just blew me away! Time flies! I thought it was Black Sabbath at first. Remember Mahoghany Rush, Moxy and all those good bands.
This is badass to hear the good old days of classic rock here in SA
Yessir....
Metal Infancy!! Priceless!!Halford Made D'ianno even if Paul never knew it!!!🤣🤣🤣4 min mark sounds like Maiden at the Rainbow 1980.
It's ok I'm just glad to see that you have good taste. Rock on ✌️
🎸💁♀️I want to go back too! Lol
Chris Cornell & Robert Plant pre 73 sang just as high
Zeppelin never played America again,
When Plant heard UFO wasn't going to play, he told Graham to go get those Brummies (Priest).
Boy the crowd really sounds jazzed up for Judas Priest. Poor REO Speedwagon had to follow THAT.
hahahahahahaa exactly! priest man!
*****
yeah he did. he used to live in a place called Rosemont next to a friend of mine. they must've called him last minute.
talk about roll with the changes
kennatiousc nicely done.
What a Metal treat thanks for the post this made my Metal Day even better!!Long Live Judas Priest!!!!
🎸💁♀️Yes incredible! Here I’m discovering this 9yrs after you & I’m feeling the same way!
Definitely ahead of their time. Unmatched by any other band at the time. The godfathers of heavy metal!!!!!!!!!
🎸💁♀️Agreed!
Scorpions did matched and surpassed them in those yrs, compare the set lists at the time no fanatism. Judas Priest is my favorite metal band Scorpions are my fav band , both were really heavy at the time
Scorpions can't come close to judas priest in my opinion! !!!!!!!
@@dannylapenna5062Scorps are hard rock, no freaking comparison.
That were so freaking heavy for that time. Incredible!
Great, great concert. An exciting time period (77- 79) for this band
The priest that is the beast!
Kool
Pure RAW power and boy they were hungry.... golden history!!!
What a treat to find this, thanks!
They should have kept Les Binks indefinitely.. their best drummer.
Ironman KMSA most definitely
By the cymballs sound i think is Simon Phillips, one of his few shows... Analising the Sin After Sin songs arrangments... Les Binks changed it a little.
Keep FUNNING!
According to Downing's autobiography, Binks quit over a money dispute with the label. He wanted to get paid, they were like, "You're just the drummer," and he fucked off and left the band hanging just before the tour promoting Unleashed in the East.
@@satyrosphilbrucato9140 You are completely in error.
It's about the drummer keeping time
Municipal auditorium. I was at that concert. Did not know that his concert was posted on utbube.
It was at the Municipal, I was there. Very unusual look and style. Tipton had a Marshall blow, lost his temper backstage. Kicked over a bunch of chairs. Next time was Joe Freeman, I recorded it. Wanted this one more, pre-Exciter.......THANK YOU
Can you explain more. Thanks
🎸💁♀️Thx for info!
Simon was in demand as a session drummer. They invited him to join and he turned them down.
OBRIGADO POR EXISTIREM. METAL FOREVER 🇧🇷🤘
Best line-up the Priest ever had. Should have kept Les Binks tho!!
True but Scott Travis is great and underappreciated
@@jasonfreak99 travis shouldn't even be mentioned in the same month as binks... it's like a shot of early times after an aged bourbon
@Joseph Burnside he had very good time, but too bland. not his doing though. i read they wanted it simple and straight forward.
i think you forgot who made painkiller 😅 but sure he was a good good drummer
Delivering the Goods hooked me. I can't believe they never did it in concert.
th-cam.com/video/ln2W5heC0K8/w-d-xo.html
There it is!
I know there is a live recording from 1979s Unleashed in the East. Look for the extended CD release.
Man if only video to go with it...At the top of their game here
doesn't get better than this. This is one of the few live shows even available from the Sin after Sin tour! I'm almost tempted to attempt my skills to remaster the audio!
Please do that! As long as it doesn't replace this gem
SMCsilvermountain . . . it may get better. . . world tour next year
Yeah you should remaster it
SMCsilvermountain -- If you do, PLEASE contact me. I need a good copy!
I LOVE Priest!
Please do.
My ticket for the Paramount Theater in Asbury Park, NJ 1979 was $7.00... AWEOME show. Hell Bent for Leather... They played with Twisted Sister a local act at thew time we used to see them every Thursday at the Fountain Casino in NJ...
Was there!
Convention Hall
Thank you metalinvader888!!
It's a blast from the past to hear Joe Anthony, the DJ at 99.5 KISS, introducing the band at the San Antonio Convention Center Arena. Once I called him at the station and requested him to play anything off side 2 of Sin after Sin - He ended up playing the whole thing!
The GODFATHER
Kmac kiss
YEAH!! The "British Steel" tour was my first concert, too! Def Leppard "on through the night" and Scorpions "animal magnetism" rounded out the bill...SICK SHOW...remember it like yesterday!
Let Us Prey/ Call For The Priest 00:43
Victim Of Changes 6:42
Diamonds And Rust 15:08
The Ripper 19:21
Sinner 22:25
Genocide 29:57
Starbreaker 43:13
From Sa Blown Away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seen them 3 times born in 82!
Yeah, thanks for that man. I live in San Antonio and I couldn't think of any open air stadiums in SA back then... answered a question of mine, so thanks.
I was there!
Sin After Sin was a hell of an album...It's a pity there are no soundboards from 1976 or 1977.
my fav Priest album. it’s so good. Phillips drumming took them to another level. Dissident Aggressor their finest moment
+NelsonClick
Hey, NelsonClick: Lots of what you say is indeed correct.
+NelsonClick very well put sir. Listen to All the Worlds a Stage from Rush, especially 2112 for some more insane proto style metal
Heck Yeah "All the World's a Stage" is a great album as is "2112"
NelsonClick cheaper?? Less sophisticated ??
Mike McAfee You should try Caress of steel by them.
The Necromancer shows the birth of speedmetal. 1975
Thank you for the rare Priest! Excellent!
Really love the tempo of Victim of changes, and all the tunes! Unleashed in the east released the next year sounded so rushed!
What a gem! Thanks a million!
Awesome!Thanks for sharing!!!
I was there too. I grew up about 3 miles from Glen Helen Park
I'd give my left nut to go back in time for this
This concert proves san antonio is the heavy metal capital of the U.S.A. r.i.p.joe (the godfather)anthony 99.5 kiss fm rocks san antonio since 1970 and still rocking 2019 and beyond
Except Priest was a thrash band comparing to most of bands of the era and even more for american bands who werent as raw and heavy than us , europeans
99.5 Kiss has been more of alternative as of late... they dont play classic priest, Maiden, legs diamond, Sabbath, killer Drawfs, etc....
F-ing epic! Tx for posting!
what a f_cking unreal performance from start to end, Metal GODS!
РАРИТЕТ! Джудас ПРИСТ ВЕЛИКОЛЕПЕН!! 🤩🎤😝🎸👏🥁💯❤ Кей Кей КРУТО! Шикарные ботфорты, БРАВО! 👍🤗🙏
PIONEERS of the great storm that was to come...
This is awesome!
All thanks to THE GODFATHER JOE ANTHONY!,I was all the shows @ Municipal Auditorium! This is the greatest thing about being in the. 70's. We could do many ,,things& getaway with it \m/
No Computers
Kat Toudouze-I just found this video and posted the comment that I WONDERED if The Godfather brought them. I knew that I first saw Judas Priest in Corpus Christi around 76-'77(at 62, I remember the bands that I saw, but not the exact year for the concert). Thanks for confirming about Joe Anthony's influence. KMAC-AM Radio, with Joe and Lou Roney, was THE greatest thing I ever heard on AM radio!
Yes we can do that 👍
12:07 здесь Роб поёт просто космически! Низкий баритон очень ему идёт, надо было в студийной версии Жертвы Перемен в таком стиле петь эту часть песни! Было бы очень мощно!
Awesome. This is a treat and a half for the Priest purist.
Still have my Sin After Sin - nothing touched this (short) LP...except Sad Wings of Destiny I suppose. This was the sonic transition from a space-metal thing to hell bent for leather. More plexi than the JCM to come...see KK's metal panel stacks ?
and..what a Voice.
half the setlist is sad wings so its not 'i suppose' its a fact
Dude...Stained Class!
THIS IS GREAT MAN!!!!!! OLD '77 WOW GREAT SET LIST!!!!!!!!
Damn Rob's vocals are insane and it's the same phrasing as the album
I think the sound is pretty good considering what was available for recording back in 1977.
🎸💁♀️That’s what I thought!
Thank you Godfather Joe Anthony for the metal you played on the radio on saturday nights.
I was at this concert, still have the ticket stub !!!!
This is fantastic :) Thank you sooo much

Halford hitting the hi notes.
Fantastic.
peak Priest!! Sin After Sin is amazing
Fantastic; thank you!
A little blurry time for many. of us!
Dave was better with Trapeze
Especially on boat club 1975 .
This and 77/79 Priest you have best of both .
Everyone says Dave was better with Trapese, I just don't hear it.
Haha
@@hheuvel178 Unfortunately, CBS changed the title for us.
Nah quite the contrary, there's a shitload of fans who feel the same, I myself included, and in all fairness, the last great Priest album was British Steel, but even then it don't come close to their 70's material.
Let Us Prey/Call For The Priest YES, YES, YES!!! NWOBHM was born in Sin After Sin album!
one thing great about priest is they always play their songs note for note which I truly enjoy
SUPER !!!!
Great!
i love Rob so much!!
