  • In this interview I am joined by John Riley Perks, author, teacher, and was for seven years the butler and attendant of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche.
Born in 1934, John recounts his childhood during World War 2, where he learned how to harness his intuition and psychic capacities under the guidance of his mother while avoiding air strikes and other dangers. John recalls moving to the USA in 1950 and tells of his life there through the decades of cultural change that marked the latter half of the 20th century.
John describes his first meeting with renowned guru of Tibetan Buddhism Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche and the subsequent years in his service as personal attendant and butler. John recalls the powerful spiritual field of tantric masters and details how Trungpa worked to dismantled John’s ego in a variety of potent ways.
John also reflects on the line between so called crazy wisdom activity intended to enlighten students and the abuse of trust of which so many celebrity spiritual masters, including Trungpa himself, have been accused.
John also explains how to send and receive messages on the wind, the protocol for interacting with spirit beings, and how to live in the mystery.

I read this man’s book last year, I loved it and it was very instructive on relating with a Vajrayana Guru which is very helpful for my life! Thank you Viking Guru for providing these videos that fit my very specific niche obsession. 🙏

Seonaidh / Tungpa Rinpoche is a living treasure and in this interview Rinpoche speaks so clearly about the blissful proximity to a mind that is calm, intelligent, humorous and bright--which we can also feel, just hearing him talk about it.

Wonderful interview ! Thank you so much. If possible, I would love ask him more in depth about the grounds shared between the spirituality his mom herited to him and buddhism.

Great one. To hear from someone who was so close to Trungpa through so much is pretty amazing. An oral history interview and full of Dharma gems.

Thank you for posting, life is suffering in part, the buddhas life experiences, perhaps colored his doctrine. Joy I feel is extremely important for nodes that involve global unification. People havent heard the message given to Canada, about getting rid of all bukes, and then Hevean will act kindly...

I can hear the most beautiful music in white noise. If I knew the language I could've written it down. I do know music is in the wind. Other people hear it too and do write it down.

Not really. He had passed on before they were eligible for such practices which students pursued from other teachers who had the permission to pass the teachings along.

It's not that simple when it comes to abuse dynamics. Leaving an abusive situation is one of the most dangerous times for victims of abuse.

Agreed. Consensual sex is innocent, and experiment! If any harms occur it is understood that it is due to both partners, there is consensual blame and forgiveness as well. And students should not be so witless that they allow themselves to be abused through some delusion that they must do whatever the Guru says.
