Even as a kid I wanted to smack my friends for how they treated their cards, some of them even folded their cards and placed them in their back pocket.

I remember watching this video when it first came out; and it was the foundation for my understanding of the value of Pokemon cards. Prior to that, I was under the impression that my non-mint collection would be worth a fortune someday.
I remember seeing the value of a sealed 1st ed base set box at $6000, and assumed it was an absurd amount that even die-hard collectors couldn't possibly justify spending.
Needless to say, within the last year, when I heard that individual PACKS were selling for $6000+, let alone a sealed box, I was so confused. It all makes sense, but it's still cathartic witnessing the value skyrocket to the level it is now.

Very nice video! I still have all my cards from when I was little, as well as some more when I went through a phase back around 2008. I got about 1,600 total. They probably aren't worth much, even with some of the holos I have, but it's all about the memories and good times I had collecting them. I might be on the verge of another collecting phase. I've been watching so many Pokemon videos lately, it may not be long before I buy a few more packs.

There was this one time where I had a friend (Strong emphasis on the word HAD) who I gave pokemon cards to. I did not trade with her, I just gave them to her just because I was generous and kind. (I didn't give her ALL of my pokemon cards btw) I gave her ALOT of them though, but I didn't mind. I do also remember giving her one of my most favorite cards, Electrike. I liked that card a lot, even though I didn't pay too much attention to it. I gave it too her and she seemed happy, and that was all cared I about because I was happy seeing my friend happy. So 2 to 3 years later, things have DRASTICALLY changed since then and we have parted as freinds and became enemies. One day we were having a argument and either she or I brought up my pokemon cards and then I said: "You know, what even happened to the pokemon cards I gave you?" And what she said next made me so upset and crushed in despair. She said this in a sassy tone: "Oh, I threw them all away." That did it for me. Right when after she said that, I felt so betrayed. I knew that from that day forward there was no chance of going back the same way again. I still regret giving her those cards to this day, including my beloved Elecktrike.

The pokemon card collection i had as a kid was pretty sweet. I remember once getting 4 booster packs and opening Charizards from 3 of them. I can't remember which 3, but I know I needed just 3 cards to have the entire set. And I kept them all in card sleeves in numerical order:p
However, when i grew out of it I gave all my cards to a friend of mines kid brother. I was the only kid at my school that had a Holo Muk aswell:p
Really Wish I had kept them.

english base set was released in 1999, 16 years ago, if you'll be 36 in 2025 that means youre 26 right now. in 1999 you were 10 years old, last time i checked 10 year olds were not grade 2 lol
and thats giving you the benefit of the doubt that you put only base set cards in there, if you put any newer cards like jungle and fossil you would have almost been 11 or 12

      @amyschildgamerlive4519 8 ปีที่แล้ว

The older cards may grow in value because of it though. Although I'll be honest I first thought the god cards would hold up better in value than they did. All the counterfeit bogus cards that flooded the market shortly before, during, and after made sure the real cards would be valueless -.- same could be said about the legendary dragon cards that Yugi, Joey, and Kaiba each got. On a side note I'm ecstatic to see another person who is a fan of both pokemon AND yugioh. As that other guy is a prime example of how diverse the fan base for both franchises truly are. Like the play station and X box. Digimon is the Nintendo equivalent, meaning not nearly as popular as the other two lol

I had a Showdowless Charizard waay back in primary school, as well as a few holo's and st editions. It was easier to come by and cheap. Cant say that i regret not holding on to them, as they really aren't worth as much as i though. Thank you for elaborating on a subject i thought never to revisit again. Im sure its bitter-sweet for any first-gen peeps out there.

I used to have loads of pokemon cards because my uncle once bought me and my brother huge amounts of them back from japan when he went over on business. We never played the game we just looked at them and put them in one of those folders. I reckon the quality of most of them is pretty good because they hardly got touched. Dunno what edition they were or anything but we were very young when we got them so could be one of the earliest editions. Don't know if we ever had any of the particularly sought after characters though. Still would be interesting to find out where all the cards are and have a look. I remember going to see the pokemon movie and with every ticket you got a free special pokemon card so they might be worth a bit.

Fun story...when I was a kid, I had a HUGE binder full of rare and holo pokemon. By fifth grade, I had somehow collected all Shining Pokemon but Charizard, Magikarp, and either Celebi. Not only that, but I had tons of the better Ex pokemon, including Charizard, Wailord, and Typhlosion. Oh, and awesome stuff like Rocket's Moltres Ex. To top that off, I was keeping them in a binder and was pretty careful not to damage the cards, as I did more trading than collecting. The cards were in great condition, for the most part (I know a lot about condition as an avid Yugioh trader, and if my memory serves me, they'd definitely be close to mint).
Absent-minded me one day forgot to take their binder with them after lunch. All 100+ Rare and Holo pokemon gone. I pretty much gave up on Pokemon trading at that point and I never got the binder back. I DID still have my Rocket's Mewtwo Ex, which my friend wrecked, bringing it from decent to horrible condition. That said, I managed to offload it for 35 dollars on Ebay...
The cards I have now though are just a smattering of old rares plus all my commons/uncommons, which have no value, and an insane amount of basic energies, which are also valueless.

My older brother has four cards that seem to be valuable.
-A shiny Moltres in nearly perfect condition that he says he got from going to see the Pokemon movie
-Shiny Meowth that says "PROMO" on it. He says he got it from getting Pokemon Gold on the Game Boy Color
-Shiny Lugia that he got from a random card pack
    -shiny "Giovanni's Nidoking"
Are these valuable? They're in near mint condition.

The shiny meowth won't be because it's a promo, same with moltres

Yah I just found out today that my older brother's collection is over 5000$ because of the original cards he accumulated as a child. He kept his cards in a binder and they're in fantastic condition but they have a few nitches here and there. If I wait a few more years his collection will be more than it is now!

generally TCG's that have actual formats are more worth your money than pokemon's awful format. the pokemon TCG has potential, if it wasn't for the fact that the only supported format is a terrible monthly set rotation one. it's pretty much just a way to prevent power creep.

  • @BDPlaythroughs

I got myself a holographic, first edition Lugia. Thankfully, I was a kid who was obsessed with preserving the quality of my cards! I put that baby into a protective sleeve, put it into a carefully organized binder, and only on rare instances was it ever touched again. I last brought it out a couple of weeks ago and while the sleeve does show its age a bit, the card is in... well, I'm no PSA critic, but let's go low end of the scale at minimum and say it is still in pretty good shape. No warping, no scratches, no frilled edges. I never used it in decks because I was it too difficult to build up to and the discard drawback of using its attack just wasn't worth it.
And there it shall sit for a long time yet. But perhaps I'll go the extra mile and get it PSA preserved. Nobody will want the 10,000 Goldeen that sat in my shoebox, but a first edition Neo Genesis Lugia that is at minimum in pretty good shape? Maybe!

I have a card that people have paid $400+ for on Ebay (and I haven't checked in quite a while); a Pop 5 Shiny Umbreon. It's in good shape because I got it in college and it has spent most of it's life hidden away in a good binder. (I went through another collection phase in the late 2000s, okay, don't judge me)
Probably not flawless, but still decent. Hanging onto it though cuz Umbreon was my favorite for YEARS, especially the shiny form.

I agree with everything you're saying. You missed one point I feel is important.
Power creep has made the old Pokemon significantly worse in casual games. If the cards of today were still scaled similarly to the older ones and kept in demand through rotating tournament formats and interesting abilities, the older cards would be more worthwhile.

For the two binders full of Pokemon cards I have, even as I have kept them safe for years, I'm sure those binders aren't very valuable. A lot of the cards are commons, I have a few holos, and I, too, had done what JWittz mentioned when shuffling cards through binders before. Even so, I don't think I'll sell them anyway, as they're valuable to me.

I learned from Shark Tank, the value of something is what people/a person will pay for it. So if on some website, a card is listed at $2, but a person will buy it off of you for $5, then it's worth $5.Also, my brother and I (who wasn't as big a Pokemon fan growing up), bought the basic starter set box back when it came out. We didn't know the boxes had the same cards. We both got the hologram Machamp, which is what every starter set box had, and it was $15 for each box at the time.
