    This is an icredibly difficult piece of vocal music to perform without sounding completely out of tune and mental. Yet Syd does it very well. Maybe it takes a man of unstable mind to truly express potentially unstable music. Maybe Syd didn't go completely mad, maybe in his genius he saw something that he realised none of us ought to know and knew he should keep shtum. Maybe he spent the rest of his days in content peacefulness, eating sweats and quietly laughing to himself.

      Unfortunately in Syds head it sounded like the production of a Pink Floyd recording. Part of his psychosis was he was embarrassed by his talent. Plus a lack of control of his own art. Give him the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the airing of dirty laundry. No artist wants anything but his best art out there.

    If you listen the edit in the beginning he is cut off at the word "cut" to be ironic - you can even hear the producer talking and syd said clearly he just needed a good take out of the song, and wanted the bad takes cut out of the finished product. They clearly did the opposite. They edited the beginning to make it seem ironic and "stranger" than it is, then they just left this take the way it was with out editing out the bad parts. Come on people. It's not hard to figure out. Also he sounds totally sane, his image in the media was a commercial image. His voice sounds beautiful anyway, so what if it was a bad take. Stop believing every thing that is popularized. If the image of him as crazy wasn't associated with him, and we just heard this as if it were any person, no one would assume as much about him. In 1971 he said to an interviewer, "talking is superfluous" because everything that gets talked about is not the truth, the only thing that matters is what you create. And this was supposedly during his mad phase. Yet it's one of the most intelligent responses I have ever heard. The real tragedy here is the ignorance of the mindless public, not Syd. He did what he was meant to do.

      Sorry, but you’re way off base here. You don’t seem to know the backstory of this recording, and who was involved. If you want a better idea of what was going on with Syd Barrett during this time period (and leading up to these troubled days) you might wanna look into the book A Very Irregular Head. It’s well written, well researched and does not try to exaggerate who he was and does not try to mythologize him. It tells it like it was. He was a very talented and creative person but over time became very detached and disturbed. To the point of living with family members and becoming a recluse. There’s no candy coating that.

      @Valientlink 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@shikawgoh Yeah, great read. I'm in a Facebook group where Rob Chapman is also in, also one of Syd's old girlfriends, it's been interesting. Like they said in this book, Syd was truly a Mandrax casualty, not acid. I think it went like "to sound like an acid casualty sounds heroic, while a Mandrax casualty is just sad" he was on it heavily during recording sessions, you can tell here. It's like his brain shuts down in the beginning, but you gotta be honest, they did do him dirty leaving that in. Dave and Rog both said they were trying to show what he was like and also "punish him" whatever the hell punishing him meant

      I believe punishing him for almost ruining their deal and careers with what i'm assuming was a combination of mandrax, a non-cooperative attitude, and ego. As for the floyd, It's a disgusting and non empathetic reaction- but it is very human. I'd also like to add that I feel there was a lot of jealousy from the other members towards syd which would also explain the "punishing".@@Valientlink

    This song is a guilty pleasure for me. Feels like a look into a mind that's struggling and failing to hold on to some slice of sanity. I think the most compassionate thing at the time would have been to talk Syd out of trying to make his solo albums, but presumably EMI and others were hoping to squeeze some more money out of Syd. It all feels like a terrible act of exploitation. Leaving in the false starts and all the mistakes in this performance feels especially cruel, but maybe Waters and Gilmour were trying to drive the point home that Syd was no longer capable of performing. Or maybe they were trying to be funny at Syd's expense. Or maybe they were just tired and frustrated by this point. Hard to say.

      It's very hard to stretch out the two syllable word "Thinking" over the range and number of notes this song demands. I've tried it a few times myself and I sound terrible. Check out the "Kiev cuando nieva" cover of this. The singer there actually manages it. It's just a Spanish amateur group, and they sing it in Spanish, but it gives you and idea of what the song could song like. It's grown on me a bit. If you head over there give them a like, they deserve it.

    straordinaria !! Penso che sia stata una grande canzone fatta anche da altri Mick Jagger o da altri grandi rocker, forse Robert Plant, ma questa era una canzone di Syd, comunque solo lui poteva cantarla in questo modo, ed è una canzone non ultimata. Non è terminato !! eh he he stesso altre sue canzoni ...

      Eric Albrecht You can tell he's not really well. Same could be said for a lot of his songs but this one stands out a bit.
      Also, the steel rail might have been referenced in Wish You Were Here.
      That's some of my take on it.

      It could have been a masterpiece... do you agree? It's only a DEMO, but the melody is really great!!! Imagine this song with the arrangements of "The Piper", for example... If I were a musician, I'd make justice with this song... It deserves that. This song deserves a finished and well arranged cover. Definitely.

      See if you can find "Kiev cuando nieva" cover of this. The singer there actually manages it very well. It's just a Spanish amateur group, and they sing it in Spanish, but it gives you and idea of what the song could be like. There's also Cujo's punkish version, which has some nice details but misses the point of the song.

    He died with almost 2 million Euros.....Piper is a genre classic and sells well to this day. Considering he has writing credits on all but one song, why yes, he easily died a millionaire. But it's moot. Syd didn't care much about money in the end.

      The chords are dead simple G/D in the verse, C/G/D in the chorus. None of Syd's songs are terribly complex, but the genius didn't lay in overly frou frou arrangements, it's the immediacy and odd urgency that's hard to match IMO
