Yes! I love very much Syd Barrett songs and guitar playing technic. He was a good song writer too. He was a brilliant person. R.I.P. ROGER "SYD" BARRETT Alex from Italy.
Syd Barrett's melodic, musical and lyrical genius haunts/haunted Roger Waters and David Gilmour as song writers their entire careers whether they want to admit it or not.
Without help of those two, Nick and Rick these solo albums never would have been released. This song in particular has a solo thats played backwards, because thats the only way he could play guitar, when they put the tape backwards for him in the studio. Genious songwriter, if his drug abuse didn't take its toll, Syd would most likely be up there with Lennon and McCartney. I'd hardly say they are jealous, especially when Gilmour in particular made sure the royalties reach Syd, they played Astronomy Domine on the Pulse tour, its a tactical move to get him more royalties.
Not a madman, not a burnout, not insane. Syd knew EXACTLY what he was doing. Every sound, every word, every note placed precisely as he intended. Not outtakes, not ramblings, not patched-up accidents. And the saddest part is, that we will not hear anything more from him. 😕
Yeah, can't stand folk who put Syd down, i dare anyone to do a shed load of acid then write & produce two albums that go on to still sell 5 decades later.
This song is so marvelous and special. I like the atmosphere of it and it's lyrics just describe the feeling of a deep sorrow that turned into a lethargic mood where you feel the only way to escape ,,the harm,, of this life is to waste your time.Weird is that I often get the same feelings....
I have to say that I really like the free flow aspect of this song, all the experimental sounds and compositions. Nothing stale or repetitive about this song. Syd Barrett's uniqueness was little understood or respected by an unoriginal, formulaic pop industry. They never understood that sometimes people don't want to just dance, they want to have their eardrums scintillated by sound.
According to Gilmour, they kept trying to get him to play a lead for this part but he just couldn’t do it. Syd then wanted them to play the tape backwards, and only then Syd got into a groove and played the solo. The rest of the song was then played normal, but had this reversed guitar part that worked for reasons only Syd seemed to understand. Madness, maybe. But undeniably creative.
Jerry Shirley said something I found truly amazing about this track: Syd could not get the lead guitar part right, but when the backing track was played backwards, he was able to play the part backwards perfectly well. This is the recording, played in reverse, that you hear here.
He didn't play the guitar part backwards. David said they played the backing track backwards. He recorded the guitar lead normally. So then when the recording was played normally, the guitar is backwards. If you listen you can hear that the guitar is backwards. And yes they did it in one take.
Love the song, and the story behind ..- if not- the song didnt matter so much....the dead pan delivery with an ocean of sadness behind..creative approach for the small pop gem that it is...quirky songs where more tolerated by the commercials back then.

'Barrett', the album from which this song appears, was released on Nov 1970. It was the last bit of work recorded before he recluded into his second life. I believe he stopped appearing 2 years later. Odd and enjoyable album.
Jerry Shirley said in an interview that Syd was so off the wall rhat he just couldn't produce the guitar sound on it. Only when David gilmour had the idea to have him play it backwards it worked out perfectly. That's why it sounds like that
fun fact about the backwards guitar, david gilmour had to play the backing track backwards because syd kept on messing up trying to play backwards guitar forwards
i agree. absolutely. almost everything in the current pop or hip/hop mainstream could never stand on it's own without the slick (over) production. there are a few bands i like who put out amazingly polished/produced records, but the songs also completely hold up acoustically as well. the best stuff should always be about the song.
i agree that the beatle songs that ended up on their records relied heavily upon production. but a song like 'strawberry fields forever' was an unbelievably beautiful song initially, with just lennon and his guitar. as a singer/songwriter myself, i love and appreciate the raw version. but in my opinion, the world is better place because of the "painted" version as well.
Dave Gilmour produced this and is playing drums, but apparently Syd knew exactly what he was doing with the backward guitar track even though he was really wasted, man..
Jerry Shirley tells a crazy story about this track. Syd could not do the guitar solo's and overdubs, no matter how many times they tried. Dave Gilmour played the track backwards and Syd nailed it in one take, backwards. Nuts.

All credit to the wonderfully caring Dave Gilmour - without whose efforts none of this would have ever been assembled. ❤ The backwards guitar recording was an idea of surreal genius!
Don’t care what anyone says about Syd going mad: this is as brilliant as music gets. I feel it so deeply on an emotional level.

well yea i think making numerous songs about it can be classed as admitting it
Syds mental illness and decline saddened them to such a level. We don't know how syd was as a lovely person and to see a slow death of close friend .
Yeah Syd stands unmatched a true genius songwriter
An eccentric drug taking artist, not your usual brand of accepted sanity!

I’m very heartbroken by Syd’s story. Too pure a soul for this world.
Very chill very groovy true musicianship and master work here genius minds of a supernatural place and time
Beautiful tune. I Hear this when it's one of those grey and rainy days
It's a great and rainy day as I'm sitting in my car waiting for some work.
Yes it's a perfect rainy day song.
Like today...
Yess, like today in Padova! I love listen to this tune on rainy days.
I hear this no matter the weather!
There's music.. Great music.. and musical genius.
Then there's Syd, standing over there.
Bought this album on Vinyl yesterday. I really like it, this song especially.

You can hear every other song stole from this old school masterpiece!
Hauntingly beautiful. I remember watching a clip of Gilmour explaining how this song was recorded with the reverse section in one take.
This song is so marvelous and special. I like the atmosphere of it and it's lyrics just describe the feeling of a deep sorrow that turned into a lethargic mood where you feel the only way to escape ,,the harm,, of this life is to waste your time.Weird is that I often get the same feelings....
That sums it up. 👌 Basically what Syd did, more or less, at least as Roger saw it in his writing.
taking too much acid will make you feel this way, but you'll be back in a few months
