This has a practical use beyond social media. We professors are creating a lot of material, online for our students, including lectures, and this is something I would use to cut out all the "ums" and "you knows" in recorded lectures! I would love to put something besides me on the screen for these lectures that is more interesting than simple powerpoint slides. I'm def going to check this out!
That fact that Justine is recording a video about video editing but then has to go and edit the video she is already filming about editing in the video, to show us how to edit is just wild! Her dedication is top tier! 😊

Subscription based but you only get to use it for 10 hrs/month - in spite of the fact that you're paying in advance for a year. In hours, that equates to 5 full days of use, per year! If this was a standalone program instead of a subscription it would rock! Sometimes a really poor subscription plan can kill a really good idea. Edit: I wonder if they would introduce a price to just buy the program? That way the short use-time wouldn't be prohibitive.
Wow, that’s really poor. $24 a month is alot anyway, for only 30 hours. I don’t know about you but having a ticking clock to get booted out your project is pretty brutal and alien concept for an app..There’s also loads of other limits like only 18 word searches…I’m assuming the video is hosted on their server which is what makes it heavy cost? The actual text AI wouldn’t be that much processing/cost so they should really come up with a way of having the videos local. OR the business model is pushing for enterprise and not interested in building a foundation among independent filmmakers by pricing them out, which IMO is a huge mistake. Or maybe they just don’t want success?
Yes I checked that out as well. I was really interested, but those artificial limits on the payment plans are keeping me away from using it.
I believe the 10 or 30 hours/per month is for the AI transcription only, so it looks like it’s talking about video length rather than edit time. Either way, it still feels rather low for what you’re paying to use it.
The transcription is limited to 10 hrs, not the app itself. So even if you look at the cost of the transcription only, normally you pay like 1$ per min. with Rev it's 1,5$ per min.
10hrs = 600mins x1$... so 12$ even for the transcription only is cheap af. Same as HappyScribe but with Descript you get caption animations that are brilliant and great for Instagram and TikTok. on top of that you get an editing platform for social media. I wouldn't switch from Premiere Pro to Descript, though, but it's a great tool for pretty cool video editing for socials. Great job, brilliant tutorial.

Holy ISH. I am such a software junky, but this is the first thing in a long time that I stopped what I was doing and signed up. This is just magical stuff especially for course editing (I make tutorial videos for my web design clients). This is sooooo good!
I've been in the media biz for decades. I'm constantly amazed how the rate of advancement keeps accelerating. Nice explainer! I'll definitely check out Descript.

I think this is brilliant Justine and someone like me who struggles with traditional this has just increased accessibility massively for me. Definitely checking this out now. I loved descript but thought it had a little way to go before for my use it seems like it has taken on the feedback that we have been giving. 🎉

I don’t know how to edit and have always been interested in learning. This looks just like the easiest way to edit. It’s like writing an essay for school and hit play.

ive been a video editor for over 10 years in premiere pro. This descript things is just too powerful. has a lot of the features the tiktok editor has like capcut but even more....the idea of editing based on script not timeline is such a game changer...thanks I just lost my job.
same! I've been editing for 4+ years now and descript has changed a lot about traditional editing. I honestly enjoy editing videos so this is a bit terrifying and also very cool at the same time.
no matter which software comes or whichever AI feature, someone will still have to do the editing. editing is about analyzing the video , organizing and connecting the dots with visual story telling . no matter what comes, the world will always need editors

From another professional video editor... If this, with all the limitations it has, makes you fear losing your job, you need to chill out and figure out what you are doing wrong. There is plenty of jobs that need video editors to do captions in a way descript just cant handle, or animations that require complex keyframes, or even compositing.
Descript is not gonna make you lose your job, its just a new tool under your belt if you figure out how to use it properly.

Tried Descript a month ago for Podcast editing, really wanted to love it, but the transcriptions had a lot of issues and removing filler words makes the audio sound TERRIBLE. I spent more time fixing what the filler removal was supposed to clean up but cut off other words with it.
Hey Collin - were you removing filler words from recorded audio or imported audio? There was a bug w/ recorded audio that we fixed recently that makes this a lot better.
Adobe better watch out, this is some amazing tech.

Adobe has had a project like this in the works. Not sure if it ever came to fruition but I could see them just rolling it up into audition or premiere
I hope DavinciResolve adds it soon or just buy the company. It would also fix the subscription versus one time payment issue hitting two birds with one stone.

People are saying this is expensive but it's not. You'd pay more to an editor for one hour than you would pay for this for a month.
This is gold and you all don't know it yet.
I see only one GIANT downside here, on an overall excellent app: there's an AI model of your voice somewhere in their server probably that, if the site is hacked, could be stolen and used to produce fake recordings of you (I wonder though if a model could be created starting from all the public videos on youtube...).
It's amazing how the future of video editing is changing. Can't wait for some of this stuff to integrate into FCP :)

I'd think that adding "Made w/ Descript" to the video description would make more sense. It certainly makes more sense if you have a longer video title, as longer names will end up getting something hacked off at the end.
I think this is cool for recording educational videos where I can remove or add a few lines, I wonder if it also works with other languages, since I am teaching mostly in German
In the product description: "Multi-language transcription" with up to 23 languages. I'd be astounded if German wasn't one of them
@@SeanPaulNotTheSinger, thanks, I was looking at the FAQ and could not find anything at first. However, after trying the trial version, only transcription to other languages are supported, live-transcription or overdub (using AI) is only supported for English 😞

I had an idea similar to this. It was to upload a script and then have that script find the right clips and then cut out everything else.

What you did there takes me like 2 to 3 hours on premiere. That’s insane.
Certainly a great idea wrapped in an excelent UI, but I'm not a big fan of uploading my whole video to their servers for processing. With the power of contemporary computers with all their neural engines, this should be possible offline.

All things to consider when moving forward. Not only is it in the cloud, but the subscription is including both the AI elements and storage.

Would have loved to have seen you do a multi shot workflow on this app. Like with this video, shots of you needed to be cut with shots of the app on your computer. How would they work on Descript?

Interesting software! Very interesting. Question. Can it export in ProRes? As demonstrated, the colour part is not that impressive. Not a problem as such, Descript is not made for that, so round tripping over DavinciResolve for colouring would be needed. You need ProRes for that.
