There’s a thousand truckers hitches videos out there. They’re all pretty ridiculously difficult to do for a dumbo and hard, not instinctual to learn, easily forgotten and seem impractical. One that I kinda invented was easy enough and worked ok but needed two hands to undo and under several tonnes of load would tighten up a bit. This one, however, is super easy and quite fun and satisfying to tie, quite pretty to look at and comes out like a slip knot when you’re done. Hallelujah.
Incredible! I already know of 2 autolock mechanisms, making this the 3rd one. Always learning new things! More importantly, that one is already nearly a 5:1 to 4:1 tensioning system! 🤩
I learned a basic truckers knot when I was in my 20’s this one is way cooler and looks much more stronger and easier to do! Going to have to try it out! Thanks and have a fantastic week
The double wrap is popular among bushcrafters when rigging a ridgeline for a tarp shelter. Keeps the tension on the line and prevents sagging. Great video - thanks.
These things should be taught in school. Even a week or two course showing how to use rope. I can’t count the amount of times either myself or someone else fumbled with a rope trying to make something work. Sometimes with sketchy results. My dad showed me the trucker hitch when I was younger but we never knew about the automatic version. He was also excited when I shared this video with him
You don’t have to go through the metal loop a second time, only the a second time through to rope loop for it to bite down. He just does that for added leverage when pulling the rope I think.
I just came across some of your videos and they are great. Your explanations, demonstrations and camera angles make most of them very easy to follow and duplicate. Thanks! Please keep on posting videos!
I almost didn't click on this one. But I'm glad I did. :) There's a lot of trucker hitch videos. But I like this presentation and the method. This method is similar others but yet ... its different. I think this will become my primary method now. :)
It is called a versatackle when run through both loop and anchor twice. It also gives much more mechanical advantage than a single pass truckers hitch. Just fyi, great vid👍🏼
I think the Versatackle is a little different. It uses two loops instead of one. It it essentially the same, the difference is that the second loop acts as your anchor point. And because it uses two loops, with multiple passes between those loops, it has a lot more friction. Plus, you need more room than the back of a truck bed to make it viable. It is a good alternative to the Voodoo knot though. I think it is more of an arborist knot, not really viable for tying down cargo. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts though.
Thanks for the reply! My bad, you’re right. Well whatever I’ve been tying😂 is essentially the versatackle but run through the anchor point instead. As long as you’re not using rough rope ur gold. Dont need any more room to tie, self locks, huge mech advantage. Give it a try
This is interesting. I’m concerned that the cow hitch actually forms a poorer version of the full sheep shank. If you study the full sheep shank you will notice the half shanks are spaced apart. The risk with your version is they are very close, potentially touching. That compromises the locking effect. Also I’ve noticed a proper full sheep shank has the halves rotated the same direction, say clockwise. This causes the rope passing through them to be at a greater angle for maximum resistance to slippage. Study it closely and I’m sure you will see. I’m not a fan of anyone saying “it always has worked for me” if a safer way is no more effort. Good self locking idea and anchor tie off.
With such a system you can fasten, for example, a surfboard, but God forbid you use such a knot ( 0:45 ) to tie something heavy and serious!! Remember - what is easily untied by hand will be loosened in movement, swinging and shaking.
Loose planks require 2 opposing wrap arounds. Also you didn't show your anchor (which I'll assume is a clove hitch, but should be on the drivers side), but all, it's great if you have enough rope and it's strong enough to maintain that 3 to 1 ratio pull.
This isn't the same as the other automatic truckers hitch I've seen, both work great obviously because being able to hod that tension is awesome. One thing I will say is that with this version of the automatic Trucker's Hitch he has to be sure to have enough rope in your working end in order to make it through your loop a second time depending on were you set your loop. Other versions I've seen have the working end pass through the loop and then rather then going down through the anchor and back up through the loop they just pass through the loop a second time right away, this also works great. Another one does the same as I just described except before going through the loop second time it actually loops around the rope itself and back through the loop though I have found that one to be harder to untie.
Yep, agree with you completely. You don't always have enough rope to go around a second time so you need to learn both versions. The very last one you mentioned is of the least value, it looks good but I have also found it hard to untie, I don't think it adds much value.
I'm glad to go and learn the Kalmyk loop, and everything here made perfect sense! I just don't understand why the mid loop was that cow hitch one instead of a normal trucker's hitch. Just showing an alternative?
I went and fiddled with it. The loop that points towards the standing end is slippery, and the one he latches on to pull tension is not. The way he dresses it it looks like two half hitches with a loop inside each. If you tighten it differently you can see it’s essentially just two slippery overhand knots, and the friction of both knots is what holds it in place. I researched it quite a bit and I have no idea what this knot is called.
For the anchor point, could you use the boom hitch, or constrictor hitch? I now the constrictor is difficult to remove but I'd rather sacrifice a piece of rope than risk losing something on the road. Know-i-meen?
This way by far seems to be the quickest and easiest way to tie an automatic truckers hitch that I have seen yet. Thanks for the knowledge. 👌👍

I love knots and hitches, always good to learn new variants. Thanks a lot for sharing and cheers from Alberta- Canada!!!

I hope you can find it useful.
Ya this one stays in place whereas a slip knot falls apart

Thank you, I appreciate the compliments!
First class amature did one like this a couple a months ago and his way was more complicated. This makes way more since. Worth subscribing to!
Thank you for sharing this it works great as a ridge line in the bush !!!!!
Добрый день. Благодарю вас за интересный узел. Желаю вам крепкого здоровья, удачи и благополучия!
Kick ass! I use a blackwall a lot, but this is slick. Also love the cow hitch for the loop. Great work!

Very good! Here in Brazil we have the "nó carioca - nó caminhoneiro", but yours are better.
Thank you sir.
Hell yeah , never been shown how to use the marlin spike to add tension. Learned something today 😝✌️
You can put a lot more force on it for sure.

This is what I needed. Ty
that was an awesome way to tie down stuff on my 4x4. thank you
Another Great Video, another useful Knot
This is one handy knot. Wish I had known this years ago.
Extremely easy to learn. Thanks.
great job; simple and it works like hell!
Thanks, man! Invaluable info! I was never shown a marlin spike to increase tension.
It will definitely allow you to get a lot more attention on the line.
Fantastic explanation and knot...Thanks.
Great video! very useful knots and easy to learn. You explain it very well.
Thank you!
good video just wish I could remember another knot....... 🤠
This is one I must learn, thanks Ben 👍
Jaw drop. This is everything you need!
Best video out there thanks
Very good!!

Hello, Ben - nice! very useful and practical...thanks!
My pleasure!
Very helpful. Thanks Ben
Great tip thank you!

Great video! A different color rope than the truck bed would be better.

more videos like these. def using this
I’ll try to get some more up.

@Roonza I agree with this👍
Love it..Thanks
Nicely explained
Very nice video. What is the name of the midline loop? Thanks
Kalmyk loop, for all those who didn't quite catch the name of the anchor loop.
Thanks I am hard of hearing.
Wow its nice awesome
I'm late to the game, but I hope you can answer a question: what is the name for the midline loop that you used at 0:45 ? I've never seen it before.
Look up “Cow Hitch”. That is what those 2 clamping loops are. And he just sent a bight through.
That wasn’t a clove hitch. It was a double half hitch.
When you have three trailers all Triple tarped .. at a 100 ropes per tarp .. you’re dreamed
Very nice
This is what I am looking for. Thanks man 😁
What do you consider a good SLIPPERY rope for tieing down heavy loads? I'm looking for good rope to practice knots and use
Thanks god bless
When feeding it back through the loop, does the second wrap have to be under the first? Fantastic instructional video by the way!
ควรจะสาธิตวิธีการช้าๆ เพื่อให้ฝึกปฏิบัติตามได้ อันนี้เหมือนจะโชว์ ไม่ใช่การสอนครับ
That's the best possible reply , absolutely clear to me .
I'm glad to go and learn the Kalmyk loop, and everything here made perfect sense!
I just don't understand why the mid loop was that cow hitch one instead of a normal trucker's hitch. Just showing an alternative?
Is the normal mid loop just a slip knot? Or an alpine butterfly loop?
I went and fiddled with it. The loop that points towards the standing end is slippery, and the one he latches on to pull tension is not. If you tighten it differently you can see it’s essentially just two slippery overhand knots, and the friction of both knots is what holds it in place.
I researched it quite a bit and I have no idea what this knot is called.
Do you even get quite a bit more mechanical advantage doing the automatic truckers hitch by looping it through twice?
will it damage the rope? cz there are double frictions in the loop
Very simple, can you do a mutiple stage and then locking double pass. Yea i guess its possible. Not so mich with 1 st class Amatures.
what if I use plastic rope instead of kernmantle? is it gonna loosen itself?
Novice here: Will that be equally effective with the yellow poly rope which is slicker than snot on a chickens lip.
Good
What type of rope is or best to use for this type of work. I have been using the stiff rope but the knot sucks.
You answered it, thanks.
👏👏👏
Could you share the maker of the black trailer you are demonstrating the knot on? - Thanks
PJ
For the anchor point, could you use the boom hitch, or constrictor hitch? I now the constrictor is difficult to remove but I'd rather sacrifice a piece of rope than risk losing something on the road. Know-i-meen?
My personal favorite of those cinching hitches is the slipped spar hitch.
Use a slipped constrictor. Won’t come loose, and will still untie pretty easily
Loving the knot videos. If you haven’t already, check out First Class Amateur. He too has some great knot content.
I have seen a few of his videos. I thought the one with the watermelon sling was pretty funny.
これは素晴らしい
d(⌒ー⌒)❗️
ありがとう( ´∀` )b❗️
I use a ratchet strap hitch
You funny. Like those things never stuff up.
Just stick with the ratchet then. Saves on scarce brain space which would only be wasted to learn something new. And the stress of having to decide.
A HITCH DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY TIE ITSELF!!
so its not automatic truckers hitch ITS AUTOMATIC TENSION TRUCKERS HITCH!!
