It was funny how Jon got the August Presence trait which prevents pawns from moving to any square adjacent to him and he never intentionally used it to stop pawns from moving across the board.
I'm pretty sure he either forgot that he had it, or never understood what it did in the first place. Which is exactly what I expected from good ol 1/10 perception Jon.
In fairness though, the alternative upgrade would probably not have fared any better.

In case Jon wants to bring this back in any way (or just continue playing it in his own time) you *can* reload without moving, you just click the shotgun at the top of the screen.
Also if youre ever in checkmate like how this ended, just shoot at whoever has you in check and hope you can kill them before they get you, the queen in this instance, dont know what her health was but its better than moving into what you know for sure will kill you.
Jon literally forgot that no non king piece could get within one square. That saved him so many times in floor five.
The knight's shield absorbs all damage once. Best to scattershot and get multiple shields in a si gle salvo than point blank and waste so much damage
John says to use souls pretty liberally proceeds to not touch the souls again for the next ten minutes
Just over 5 minutes in and this seems like a *really* interesting game 👀
And it's less than a fiver too... I need to remember to pick this up.

"Processor: yes, you should have one
Graphics: you'll need a screen
Sound Card: if your computer can play sound, you should be good
Additional notes: in theory, if your computer can run Windows, it can run Shotgun King
Reminds me of the system requirements listed for the Undertale OST (not the game itself), whose minimum specs are absurdly low while the recommended specs are things like "graphics card so good it turns music into 3d images somehow" and the like.

You can fire while in check but if you have a less than 100% chance of killing the piece putting you in check the folly shield will stop you from shooting. If you burn all your folly shields you can shoot and hope you kill the peice putting you in check. The same applies if you're in check but can shoot the king.
When Jon said "Yes, that's where the shotgun comes in," I cracked up XD

BTW you can reload in place by clicking the shotgun in the top left.
You can also push through your shields to take a shot if you really want to, but its often RNG if you'll live if you don't have arc reduction.
John creates Knights who need a minimum two turns to kill and give the king immortality.
WHY IS THE KING STILL ALIVE!?
I love how Jon gave himself a massive time limit by swarming the board with tons of more hardy pawns heading towards his end of the board for promotion and/or boxing him in, then made it so he had to take at bare minimum six turns extra turns by giving the enemy knights shields and then allowing them to Bodyguard the king.
he didnt give himself six extra turns, he could have used a single turn to hit multiple knights with a single shot to eliminate their shields
he played it very poorly, not only was he wasting a single turn per knight shield, but he was also burning turns in order to get right up next to them in order to shoot their shield
also the amount of turns he made unnecessarily moving further away from his target(s) when he could have just moved to an adjacent, equally close space certainly didnt help and had me shouting at my monitor

I like how Jon avoids being put in check, as if THAT was the lose condition! Admittedly, it is, by definition, one step away FROM defeat, but it still isn't the same thing!

@@Xenotric Yes. But he was worrying about how he would START his NEXT turn. For example, he would choose to move instead of taking a shot, because if he didn't a knight could put him INTO check.
Thing is, if he DIDN'T move, and WAS put into check, he could then MOVE OUT OF CHECK.
It's not even a case of "well, if I get checked here, I might not be able to get out of it!" He just refused to let the opposing pieces put him into check in the first place!
At first blush this may not seem like a big deal, but each unneeded move is a shot not taken. And those missed shots add up, ESPECIALLY if you could have killed (or severely wounded) something, opening up more options for the turn when you are ACTUALLY IN CHECK.
When you're action economy is you're biggest advantage (yes, that includes the shotgun, this is subjective), then wasting a move for any reason just niggles at me.

So, I never played this, but I watched another tuber play it through to the final of the hard modes. Some hints if you wish to continue (And haven't learned them yet) If you can kill a piece that has you in check at that moment you shoot, you don't lose. You will if it doesn't die but if it does it can't checkmate you. And you can look at the cards at any time. Also use the souls liberally, like candy. As long as you have other non-pawn pieces, they're expendable, and lifesaving. The final hint I have to say that I noticed is DON'T PANIC! Or do if it helps you focus. Scratch that, just focus and look at board state. And actually, the last hint is to always have fun! Honestly, you're one of the best tubers I see on the platform.

Love the theme of this video! Recently tried some old SNES games, including Chessmaster, which is good but beatable (roughly 2000 Elo, i.e. a decent chess player). And then while digging through my old video-games collection found that I'd actually bought Chessmaster 11th Edition (for 50 eurocents!) which was handily beating grandmasters by that time. I can highly recommend both as a way of seeing how a computer develops over time to achieve great things at such a beloved and universal game.
Fun fact: "Into the Breach" (by the makers of FTL and featured on this channel) is a chess game in disguise. Just count the squares on the board!

Jon has a very poor understanding of shields if he thought it sounded perfectly reasonable that they somehow magically heal their wielder *after* they've been damaged.

Finished the demo of this some months ago. The final boss is cool.
This was the winner of Ludum Dare 50 (1-4 April, 2022) and was made in just 72 hours. The theme was "delay the inevitable".

This could work at tournaments outside the main competition; one side full, the other side just a king that can shoot in any direction, but needs to be double-checked to lose.

kings shoulders is actually really good. You can use it to pick up a piece next to you (even if the piece has you in check) and then throw that piece at another piece to dmage them from long range.
This game is delightful
jon's lack of knowledge and understanding about chess made this so painful....
I'm going to assume that the shotgun in this game has intricate baroque ornamentation throughout and the phrase "ultima ratio regum" engraved somewhere on it(in ornate script, and gilded, naturally); and the low-fi art style just makes it too small for me to see.
That red and white flickering makes this unwatchable for me. I'm not epileptic but I feel like this game needs a warning.
I am imagining a chess world where only the king existing on the black side. However he is smart enough to equip a shotgun for his lack of citizens. He also managed to learn the art of soul stealing, hence your ability to use them to gain its movement.
His arch rivals, the whites, wants to dethrone him since he is the only one in the black kingdom. Hence a mighty battle between the whites and the solo black breaks loose.
But the real question is: what happened to the black kingdom?
