As someone with a lot of mental illness in my family, having also myself endured nearly half a century of my own struggles, I have used humor to get through the worst of it. It hasn’t always gone well for me. I’ve lost friends, gotten in trouble at school, and later had problems at various jobs. For me, Maria is something truly special. Other than just being incredibly funny, sweet, and beautiful, she personifies what it means to be someone who turns to humor as a way to fight demons. If you’ve never dealt with that, you probably can’t relate. But if you have, she is far more than just a comedian. She’s you.
Maria is an underrated genius! I could listen to her stand up for hours! I especially love the Paula dean suicide note bit! So dark yet so funny and well done!

I always say that we move in and in 5 years we can’t afford it anymore. I don’t know if artists _cause_ it, but we definitely seem to preclude gentrification (which is pretty much what she said) and I don’t know what to do about it. I just moved to a rural area outside of my city, I know a lot of artists that live in rural areas. If they start overdeveloping Norris TN in 5 years I guess I’ll have my answer. I identify with a lot of Maria’s subject matter, there were so many things here that I didn’t recognize/hadn’t seen before. Is there any place in particular I can find more of her stuff besides the CC specials that I’ve seen already, and Netflix?
Artists are basically priced out of art supplies anyhow. Unless you do a type of art that costs nothing I quit painting because I could not afford to buy the items needed to create and not sell a painting
@@AKayfabe back when I first started out when I wasn’t selling anything I had to wait for specific sales to come up. I still remember back when I could only get the canvas for one painting at a time, and I had to wait until I could afford one. There are some things I only ever buy on sale, and canvas is one of them (even though I should stretch my own). Your larger chain stores tend to have pretty steep discounts on canvas when they go on sale, I used to always get mine at AC MOORE when they had their 70% off sale. Back to school time is a really good time to buy art supplies, they tend to go on sale majorly during this time, and you can often pair that up with a tax free weekend. I tend to keep a list of things I need in my head and then regularly scan through sales flyers and newsletters to see if any of those items are on sale. I remember one of my biggest hauls ever came from a lucky find on craigslist, where a lifelong artist was selling all of her supplies. I had to borrow the money to buy it, but they just wanted art to repay it and I seriously _still_ use the items I got from this purchase in 2013. You can also set up a honey drop list to monitor certain supplies and notify you if they drop below a certain threshold in price. I do mostly acrylic paintings on canvas and murals with spray paint and latex house paint, and I used to get my house paint at my local recycling center, which was free. They no longer have that where I live, but it could be an option where you are. I also have used all sorts of things to paint on: free or cheap existing wall art I gessoed over, pieces of wood, furniture, canvas pads, even cardboard. Please don’t stop painting. Look for deep discounts and used items. You don’t have to get everything at once, just what you can when you can. I cherish my art supplies bc I know how long I barely had any at all. Search your local Facebook marketplace for art supplies or post on a bartering group something you’d be willing to trade for some painting stuff. Be specific about what you need. If you’ve been waiting for a sign that you should still be making art, this is it. I’ll buy a painting from you!

She's got quite an impressive range of voice characterizations; very talented in that respect. But she strikes me not so much funny as simply disjointed and chaotic. Disjointed and chaotic CAN be funny. I'm thinking Robin Williams, and to a lesser extent, Jim Carrey as examples, maybe Bobcat Goldthwait; but Maria's not getting much "funny" out of disjointed and chaotic. Avant garde, for sure, but just not very funny, IMO. Of course, "funny " is subjective, and your mileage may vary. For instance, Laurel and Hardy can always make me laugh; but a commenter on a video of theirs I just saw, said he thought it was awful. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
