Corvette: The March To Mid-Engine

  • The march to a mid-engine Corvette has been long in the making. I'm talking a good sixty years. And it's always the same story: a mid-engine Corvette is planned, it almost happens, and then it gets cut off at the knees for any number of reasons, both controllable and unmanageable. Racing bans, bankruptcies, internal opposition, engineering logistics and mechanical limitations. For as many times as the Corvette has almost been killed, only to be saved at the last moment, the inverse is true of the mid-engine variant: a dream nearly realized - but ultimately curtailed. But what changed?
Welcome to the conclusion of the RCR Stories Corvette Trilogy: The March To Mid-Engine.

An RCR stories upload is always worth the time. The current chief engineer mentioned two reasons for the mid-engine switch one is they need to appeal to a younger customer base and the other is they are reaching the performance limits of the front-engine rear-wheel-drive Corvette.

4:24 - It's interesting how Delorean "didn't really get the XP-882," then gets wind that Ford, Mercedes, and AMC are all pursuing mid-engine designs, then in '72 the XP-895 gets the aluminum body. ANNND then in 1973, he leaves to form DMC. _ANNND then in 2020 I realize the Delorean had a stainless steel body, not aluminum_ .

    • @SteelSkin667

More importantly, the DeLorean was supposed to use a mid-mounted Wankel engine, but they had to change plans when the company that was supposed to make the engines (Comotor) shut down.

RCR has actually made me a fan of the Corvette with their reviews of the C1-C8.
To me, they are all fantastic looking machines held back by the fact that GM didn't wanna spend money, only make it, so they cheaped out as much as possible sacrificing performance and quality.
Well, no, that's not all true. The C1, and C2 are beautiful. The C3 is super classic, with that serpentine, coke-bottle shape. They are the epitome of an elegant muscle car. Then the C4 and C5 look like graceless slabs. I know they perform better than the C3, but they have no style. The C6 start to get it on track again (although I recently clowned one in my Impala... that was painful to see happen, even as I was doing it... maybe it wasn't the car, but the guy driving it) and the C7s are a true North American Super Car.
Now we have the C8s... and I am very much in love with them, but waiting for them to work out all the kinks of the new design.

The Camaro has gotten so good that the C7 Vette couldn't really outperform it minus styling. Now perhaps GM @ Camaro will really go after the Dodge Challenger now that the Vette has gotten faster and as everyone knows, GM despises attempts to make any car faster then the Vette inside GM. Its time to make the Camaro shine as the US's premier Front Engine Powered car in all ways, not just on the track.

@@orion351us The Camaro is a helluva great car. If anything its too good for the power GM allows it to have. Unless you take it on a track, or watch it being driven 10/10ths you will just see it as being the 3rd place car in the pony car standings, and for what GM made, it could easily go faster if only the Vette got out of the way, which it finally did somewhat. So am looking forward to seeing what GM will allow the Camaro to be since the Vette got bumped up a bit.

I wasn’t a Corvette guy but the C7 got me into one. With the C7 they finally made a decent interior to go along with tremendous performance and value the car always had. Styling wise the C3 is still the best looking version of the car with all those sexy curves. Not a huge fan of the C8 looks but like the non circular tail lights of the C7 as time moves on the C8s styling will become more normalized. The main thing with the C8 is by going mid-engine they have finally removed the last hurdle that European car buyers have claimed for years. Sadly the dealership experience is likely to put them off so GM will never fully win here. The hard top convertible however is a winner.

At this point, the mid engined Corvette is a Chevy supercar attempt, riding on the coattails of the Corvette name. Chevrolet could have called it something else, but they knew they’d be up shits creek if they tried to name it something else.

I think Roman is doing just fine.
Brian's voice is better suited to shorter narratives and dick jokes anyway.
Keep up the good work Roman.
    Nick? Whatever.

Of all the mid engine Corvette prototypes that went nowhere I wish the CERV III made it to production.

The NEXT hurdle for the Corvette will be to produce a EV_Corvette (C9, or C10) version. ???

Interesting side not. Chrysler executives had Corvette envy. In 1996 Dodge embarked on a side project to investigate the possibility of building a mid-engine Viper. Which became the stimulus for what would be the Ford GT in the mid-2000s. That’s right; Chrysler’s mid-engine Viper program was the basis for Ford’s 2006 GT...

Lost all respect for UAW when then negotiated that those currently in the union would keep getting paid their lofty wages, while brande new employees would start at a much, much lower wage. Theese are probably the same boomers that wonder why today's young people can't afford houses.

This and the other two videos are fantastic, but I must ask. In your research, did you come across the Bertone Nivola and its role in the march to a mid-engine corvette, and opt to exclude it from this video?

IMHO, Kids who aren't old enough to drive but want a car like a Corvette want an electric sports car. The c8 is for older millennial gear heads. If the Corvette is going to survive to 100 years it's going to have to be the first American electric sports car.

You forgot to mention the Corvette Daytona Prototype. It debuted and was raced before the C8 and was mid engine.
