Having landed in Orange County many, many times, that landing is quite intense. Typically a very hard landing, with reverse thrust deploying in seconds with HEAVY braking. It's a treat, LOL! My internal organs usually end up on the back of the seat in front of me.
Always takes me back watching your videos. I retired 4 years ago after 40 years military and civilian flying. Sometimes I miss it, but only sometimes 😊
I always love it when you're at San Jose, my hometown airport. I got my PPL at RHV, just 6nm from SJC back in the late 80s. I can remember being a 5 year old plane spotter on the old observation deck at SJC in 1972. The sights, sounds and smells put aviation into my blood.
One of my favorite airports to operate a -300 from SNA in the 90s/. Had a special briefing for the pax as it was n exhilarating departure to say the least from takeoff with a 25 degree pitch to what we referred to the deep cutback.
I flew a 757 into KSNA for 14 years and quickley learned that you had better cross the threshold one dot low on the glideslope in violation of SOP. It was one of those rare times when strict adherance to SOP would compromise safety. Never had a problem landing and stopping using this procedure and using autobrakes level 4.
I have been to SWA headquarters for training and saw the rubber chickens on the flight simulators. Headquarters has the best scenery with Love Field views and Dallas skyline
Very cool video, and great flying! You and Scott the FO have a great rapport. I remember (and I'm sure you do as well) when the noise abatement procedure at SNA was even more extreme, but nowadays the planes have gotten quieter so things are a bit mellower on takeoff.
I go into SNA regularly on AA. Last landing was Ultra HARD, struts fully compressed and we bounced (when I say HARD I mean one of the overhead bins popped open). Off the bounce, back down, full reverse and hard braking. I always know SNA will be an exciting return to earth😅
I flew SWA from Phl to ord to MCI to stl to Phl in March and looked for him. No dice. I flew on Missouri one back to Philly three days before he flew it. #close
What’s funny is the airline I work for has no restrictions on Captains or First Officers taking off from SNA and also we don’t do any thing different for takeoffs other than flaps 25 on the 737 and on the Airbus we just use a different acceleration altitude and Thrust reduction altitude than on most profiles. I flew on a dispatcher fam ride out of there a few years ago, and the FO did the takeoff and it was the first time he had ever been to SNA. Trial by fire.
I imagine another fun one for pilots is Reagan National Airport (DCA). The restricted airspace just north of the airport and the tight turn you have to make to avoid it would be a challenge, but the view would be worth it.
I love the ATC/flight radar video overlay, such a nice touch to your videos. I am certain it adds a tremendous amount of work to editing, but it is much appreciated. Love your videos!!!! thanks for the great content!!!! PS Beautiful landing by Scott @SNA
I live between KLEVR and BHEAR and always thought planes were around 6000 feet when they flew over me on their way to KSNA... now I see it's 5000 feet..... Also as a passenger, I enjoy the higher AOA leaving KSNA then any other airport I've gone to
So cool to see you at my home airport and hear the familiar controllers voices. I’ve always wondered because it’s an instruction I hear given at SNA a lot, when you get a “maintain visual separation” on the SID, what are you approved to do? I imagine that allows them to squeeze you out with less than the 3mi required IFR separation or is there something else? Couple of great landings there and really awesome editing, loved this one Ern
With regards to SNA, do you notice a difference between taking off with the LEAP and CFM56 engines? Back in the 90's, loved the US Air 757-200 take offs out of SNA.
The noise abatement doesn't make a bit of difference in the noise on the ground. It's just the airport authority stroking the rich so they don't complain about the noise continuously. The way I see it is, the airport was there 1st and if you don't want to deal with the noise you should've bought an over-valued house away from the airport take-off pattern......
I fly 135 and I always explain flow/metering to my passengers by relating it to the freeway on-ramp stoplights. They all seem to get it when I do. …Unless they are from Arkansas…Then I’m at a loss.
As someone who lives in Orange County and flies out of John Wayne frequently, I always think something is off when we take off at a less severe angle and power at a different airport. Likewise, I wonder if something is wrong with the brakes when landing somewhere else.
2:20 "Please remain in your seats with your seatbelts fastened while Captain Kangaroo taxis what's left of our airplane to the gate!" 12:28 I didn't know that pilots actually enjoyed these takeoffs . TTN was such a convenient airport for me when I lived in NJ would have been great to have WN there. 12:41 It's a trap, anything other than "smooth as butter" is the wrong answer 😁
Great tips for fun in FS2020 with the PMDG 737

I'm sure the FO'S you fly with say'' This man is someone I'd fly with everyday''💯
Yes it's "I love flying with him, He went to ASU.. he'll make me look like a genius"

Been watching you since my ppl days. Now flying an a320 around. Thanks for all the inspiration and motivation!
I always wondered why I could often feel the power cutback soon after takeoff. Now I know why. Thanks for that info.
I love taking off from SNA. Almost like a rollercoaster ride with the steep climb at takeoff!!
Loved departing SNA in the 757 (as a passenger). Always thought that was the closest to an aircraft carrier takeoff that I would ever get. 😂
"Energy Dissipating Maneuver"...well said, "Skipper"...well said!!! 😊👍
The DART is nice to go from Downtown to headquarters faster than the hotel shuttle

Fun episode - graphics especially Active traffic along the Routes + video / audio of your actual plane really enhance the tale of each leg👍😎
I appreciate that!

SNA is my home airport! I loved watching this one!
I saw that tub of Parkay. sweet!
Thanks Big ERN for another awesome video.
Love the background noise in the cockpit at the beginning of the video , A,C / engines / A,P,U not sure but it added a good energy to the video.
Landing wars! I love it!!!

Chicago Midway is another fun takeoff & landing. Especially in heavy rain.

Scott greased it! Great video as always Ernie! ⭐️✈️
Watching from New Zealand. Love the vids & always great advice & humor. My son is a turboprop captain with AirNZ
Flying into Orange County this Friday the 18th. Thanks for the heads up on the landing and takeoff! 😀
Love the newer format. Your vlogs give a certain happy feeling!
Glad you like them!
I fly three times a month from SNA and LGB to vegas and OAK. I hope to have you as my captain sometime!
I flew SWA from Phl to ord to MCI to stl to Phl in March and looked for him. No dice. I flew on Missouri one back to Philly three days before he flew it. #close
Anotherl wonderful landing ❤️💛💙💥🐦
My book ya can skip landing in ASE, SDL, TEX and TPK.
The terrain and wx make those places very challenging.
Great video!

Chicago Midway is a crazy airport landing at too
What a cool job to have.

I caught a flight out of OC once. It was quite a ride. 😄
Ernie, was wondering if you could do an update to your flight bag and luggage what bags you have and what you carry on normal trips!
At OC short field takeoff is fun 😂😂

I am okay with a firm landing Ern!
With regards to SNA, do you notice a difference between taking off with the LEAP and CFM56 engines? Back in the 90's, loved the US Air 757-200 take offs out of SNA.
I do! It's just a solid plane.
It’s amazing to see what happen to Jessie Pinkman after the “Breaking Bad” series
Interesting technique. I thought on a short runway, one would aim for the numbers, in order to land on the 1000 footers.
Fly safe. Have an amazing week. 🛫🎃
Would it be possible to get pilots’ view video of the takeoffs and landings? And more of the terrain you’re flying over? Thanks.
I wish I could. I’m working to do that on a part 91 leg though. Stay tuned!
@@FlyingwithBigErnRoger. Looking forward to it 👍
Next time you are in Dallas I hope they put you at the Sheraton Downtown Dallas where airline employees get a 45% discount

From the main cabin we refer it as a “tail hook” landing followed with a stress test of the engine mounts.
Hi BigErn! First! I love M&Ms!
Maybe you should explain to everyone exactly what N1 is in relation to the engine thrust.
your FO is a doppelganger for Pro golfer Justin Thomas
St Louis has a noise abatement procedure too but not as complex

Yep KSNA must be challenging. I am not a pilot but i assume that there must have a lot of distractions there for the eyes, with the city around
Thats SWA for you.!!! 💙💛❤️
🎉 boom

Love the information! Just for clarification, is VNAV capable of setting that cutback thrust or do you always have to do it manually?
Big Ern, how about MDW? Let’s get you to start bidding routes to the East!
Lots of construction happening at Omaha Eppley Airfield aka my home airport
Quick question. Is Dallas Love Field made specifically for Southwest?
Love Field existed long before SWA. It used to be the main Dallas airport before DFW was built
I think an “ok” 3-wire would be the ticket!
Small mistake on the map. San Jose is SJC and a little further west than the dot indicates... 😊Love your videos!!!
You're right!
What's your opinion captain about landing at KMDW?
Is SAN airport considered a short runway as well? I remember it looks short.
Is SAN a pilot only with the displace threshold?
Does Southwest use a thrust bump at SNA. Im aware of other airlines do with their 73's
Orange County sounds like landing at Midway in Chicago
I love midway
At 17 seconds it shows San Jose CA airport code as SJO, That is incorrect, SJO is San Jose Cota Rica. San Jose CA is SJC
At 0:21, its SJC not SJO!!
I am glad I am not the only one. Thought they moved San Jose, Costa Rica up to California.
Small error😁
@@FlyingwithBigErnI like how you give us little tests like this to make sure that we are watching! (Wink wink.. 😊)
Will we see Captain Dave in a future vlog?
San diego is another challenge in itself.
Not in the F-8 Crusader
Sjo is Costa Rica buddy. Lol!
Hey what’s the song you use at the end?
Nothing like landing and takeoffs at SNA in a 757-200. Your planted in. Your sear and your hand is on the seat in front of you.
When do we get to see the Cirrus again?
What’s with the phenomenon of under 30 FO’s trying to grow mustaches …
I got to see POODIE at TOPS as well as the NOC
Is that Orange County FL or California?
CA
Honestly I prefer the aggressive take offs and the landings
When are u coming back to Long Beach ❤️👍🏼
Very soon!
@@FlyingwithBigErn awesome 👏🏽 👍🏼😊
Question: when was your last inflight emergency (all aircraft) and your last one in the 737? Next vlog?!
John Wayne 👍🏻home of the 🚀 takeoff’s
I love doing them🤙🏽
Is that a normal flap setting on takeoff (flaps 5)?
All depends on how heavy we are. I've taken off with flaps 25 before.
@@FlyingwithBigErn Thanks so much!
So Orange County is ALWAYS a NAVY landing
0:18 SJO?…SJC
Exactly. SJO is San Jose, Costa Rica. Oops!
SJC*

Does anyone know what happened to the green hornet.
It may be a precision airport but apparently those rules don't apply to Harrison Ford.
