  • Bioengineering is a cutting-edge field that affects our lives from the food we eat to the medicines we take - and soon, the way we think about science education. Amanda Strawhacker is creating a new technology called CRISPEE to teach young children about the ethical and social implications of gene editing. Amanda is a Ph.D. student at Tufts University in the DevTech Research Group. She completed her Master’s in Child Development at Eliot-Pearson in 2013 and received the Eliot-Pearson Research-Practice Integration Award (2013) for her research with a Boston public school on programming interfaces in kindergarten classrooms. Previously, she has served as the Project Coordinator of the ScratchJr Research Project, and as the DevTech Lab Manager from 2013-2015. Currently, Amanda’s research focuses on developing, implementing, and evaluating tools to support foundational bioengineering learning in early childhood education (K-2).
Amanda finished her B.A. in Biological Anthropology at Tufts in 2011. Her interests in early childhood education include child-computer interaction, developmentally appropriate technology, computational thinking, and creative problem solving. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I'm a 16-year-old learning biotech to treat cancer and aging. It's great to know that someone thinks this should be taught from a young age :)

Dear Amanda, I don't know if you will see this comment. I just want to thank you. I am a bioengineering student and I want to teach science to children. I hope I can. Thanks for being in me hope.❤❤

I'm a Bioengineer and this is really superficial, i'm not against teaching children (of all races and genders not just girls and "minorities") but this takes time and a lot of effort to learn, not just make genes and learn programing

This title is objectively naive. Never tell a child they need to enjoy something, they can very well figure that out themselves, thank you.

Why not give children real stuff - electronic microscopes maybe? Anybody here knows much much a CRISPR/CAS9 editing kit could cost to manufacture for kids?
