Du barry is a fascinating story of a much more caring soul and determined individual than is depicted. Thank-u for this more realistic portrayal of her. It would be wonderful to see a movie about her much like the Marie Antoinette story.

I think a full-length movie about her would be a great idea!

@@psychonauty2020 I got that feeling as well - being careful to look at evidence and not impose romantic feelings on it, of course. They were very close, and the fact she wanted to stay with him at the end when he was ill is another indicator. There's certainly no reason to believe she didn't love him, even if obviously that's not how their relationship began.

In her defence, however, it's very different to now when career options would have been open to her, and women in the past had to make different decisions to now.

Definitely not the most scandalous mistress of Versailles, in my opinion. That would be, as far as I've read and studied, and that is a great amount, Madame de Montespan, Louis XIV's longtime mistress and mother to several of his illegitimate children. She, upon being userped from her pedestal at the Palace by Louis, invoked the infamous " Affair of the Poisons", where she nearly poisoned the King and many others in the palace.
Absolutely - I have got Madame de Montespan on my list for another video! You're right, in that the question for my thumbnail is really 'no', although Jeanne was viewed by horror within the courtiers of Versailles for her past and low social status. To them, they would have 'yes!' from their very skewed way of seeing the world.

Nothing has really changed throughout the centuries, just the ways of doing the same things...
You're right - but I think especially women throughout the centuries had to find ways to make something of themselves in whatever way they could, or they wouldn't make anything at all. More options were open to men (although, of course, it was still hard if you were a poor man!), but Jeanne was smart enough to recognise that she could use her looks to gain her fortune.

It's not like she could be a stenographer! Who knows if she was actually treasonous....sounds like she was trying to keep her remaining trinkets of prosperity safe.
@Kelly Harper That was my sense of it, as well. More that she wanted to know those jewels were safe, and because of the awkward circumstances she found them in, I think du Barry was somewhat at the beck and call of those who had them in their position. I forget the name of the Englishman who was helping her, but I believe he actually WAS found to be a spy - I think he found a way to get information from du Barry, but I'm not convinced she was really certain of how she was being used. Just my opinion based on the evidence available, of course!

Zamor
Born Sidi, on the Bengal side, the young Zamor, a child, was sold by his family to English slavers shortly after his birth in 1763. Arrived in France, it was bought and offered to the Countess of Barry. The King's Mistress was then in the firmament. She reigns over the heart of Louis XV who covers her with gifts, the most beautiful woman in France.
Madame du Barry loves this kid. She keeps him close to her, feeds him, teaches him to read, write, and music. She also likes to disguise him even as she dresses him in oriental costumes overflowing with feathers and fans. Gifted with a great sense of humor, Zamor seduces Louis XV himself, even if he makes the 400 blows, not hesitating to tear off the wigs of the courtiers who pass within his reach. He followed his mistress in exile at the death of Louis XV.
The French Revolution will upset their relations with both of them. As an adult, Zamor, who was passionate about Rousseau, whom his mistress made him read, is committed to new ideas. So much so that there is a break with the countess and that Zamor is expelled from Louveciennes. The Revolution is not racist. He is appointed Secretary of Surveillance of the District of Versailles. A few years later, he testified at the trial of his former mistress. Convinced by his friends that she did not love him and saw in him only a small dog, nothing more, he pours on her a torrent of hatred that will not be for nothing in the condemnation of the Countess of Barry. It was guillotined on December 8, 1793.
Zamor lives on his ass and then gives classes to the children in his apartment near Place Maubert in Paris. Ruined because he hit the children too much and his school closed, Zamor died of cold and hunger on February 8, 1820 at the end of a life that had seen him travel the globe, the gardens of Versailles, the king's apartments, the revolutionary cobblestones before becoming for history "The Traitor of the Barry" even though he loved her so much.

Anybody watching this really would enjoy the movie " Cheri " with Michelle Pfeiffer as an absolutely exquisite Parisian courtesan in this time period. Oh my g the beautiful gowns and decor alone are worth watching it for. ❤ this.

It's true - Madame de Pompadour herself could get a whole video! I think in modern times she would probably have ended up as prime minister of France, she had a very good head for politics, but could only wield it through Louis XV. One good quality King Louis XV seemed to have...wasn't a "snob!" Both Pompadour and Du Barry were not of noble birth.
I prefer him not to have that sort of fun. He should take up calligraphy. That can fill up the time spent with mistresses. Plus it’s really relaxing. Though it can cause a person’s hand to ache if holding the brush for too long.

I would say madam de Montespan is the more infamous and scandalous. Giving her involvement on the affair of the poisons and her children being legitimised making her an ancestor of many noble and royal houses.
Yes, she was DEFINITELY more infamous - if I cover France in that time period at a later date, she will definitely be in there.

I don't know think they portrayed her in a favorable or accurate manner.They portrayed her as dumb and conniving,cold and manipulative.I trust Nikki's hard work and her videos as an accurate portrayal of the subjects she covers and unbiased in her portrayal.She does Awsum work.⚜️
The BBC show was completely inaccurate lol. She would have never of been friends with Marie Antoinette, let alone in the private company of each other, KISSING nonetheless. They were not friends, nor had any relationship whatsoever. The whole show used basic information form wikipedia on the historical figures and changed everything else to suit their crappy tv plot designed to appeal to the uneducated. From watching this program, you can easily see a completely different human being from the one portrayed on the horrible BBC show.

It does seem as though she was swept up in the blanket 'anyone wealthy who knew the royal family' round up of people that occurred during The Terror. We don't know if the charges against her were true or not, but they seem unlikely.
I think she'd been a someone better in her life if the 18th century society wouldn't have been so tough with women and ''lower status people'' back then; yes, she was hedonist indeed, but as you said, she had a polite heart

I'm really curious about how that movie is going to turn out. I've seen a short trailer, and I know that seemed to mostly focus on her life at the palace - I hope I'm wrong, because the before and after of Jeanne's life at Versailles was so interesting as well!

I just watched the excellent Maiwenn/Johnny Depp production of Jeanne DuBarry. Thanks for your factual biography. Both tell the same tale: a girl of rare beauty, intelligence, spirit and kindness who simply wanted a better life, and gave more than she ever could have taken. Shame on Zamor for his betrayal.

I adore Madame Du Barry; I even have a picture of her in my car! You have shown her life truly (and I have quite a few books on her). She was beautiful and kind; it's good to see her shown as she was. How I wish a "good" movie would be made about her (not the one from the 1930's or the new one from 2023)

Genius Russian writer Dostoevsky was so touched by the tragic story and life's end of Madame du Barry that he included her death's mentioning in his famous novel Brothers Karamazov... Very humane glimpse into last seconds of the doomed life - as he was himself on the scaffolding once, preparing to be executed as a socialist revolutionary - when Tsar's reprieve arrived... He never forgot this horrific moments, it seems...

Very Interesting story of Madame du Barry and King Louis XV. In the point of view of her life it's common in the history of monarchies. The king tried to save her from contract a terrible disease a noble gesture from him. History of all countries have real stories like this...even today as to speak. Being born not knowing her upcoming today is considered quite normal....but not in those days when she lived. What as a scandal to others....is common practice among some elite groups. Very common indeed. This is the life of King Louis XV favorite mistress. Thank you

You would think the revolutionists would realize she pushed herself through the classes and survived. She was one of the pleebians. They killed one of their own. But maybe she forgot where she came from. What a balance you'd have to keep. You'd be shuned by both classes.

I think it was more complicated than that in his case, as he was also enslaved by her. It would be like the phrase, 'living in a gilded cage'. Plus we don't really have any record of much personal correspondence between them, so it's possible he had asked for his emancipation and Madame du Barry had refused.
People have been canceling each other for thousands of years. Let’s not bring back the guillotine.
I desperately wish I could back in time and rewrite history, giving these women (such as Joanna and Jeanne) the happier endings they deserved. Tragic.

It was so lovely researching her, because instead of finding this empty-headed harlot (which she is normally made out to be), I instead found Jeanne was a kind person full of life, who simply found a way to make a good life for herself and her family. Really, that's all anyone can try to do, and she did it at a time where there were few other options for women.

I don’t know if their ages make it wrong that she is his mistress. He was old enough to be her grandfather.

Du Barry’s sins were of selfishness & folly. I have never heard of her using her wealth to help the poor-and to continue living luxuriously amongst so much poverty-not even bothering to flee France when she had plenty of opportunity to do so-rather highlights both her sense of entitlement and her sheer detachment from reality….

All was admirable; her cleverness, self-advancement, etc. However, submitting names, to the Revolutionary Tribune, and behaving in an unattractive manner, on the scaffold, left a blot----on a generous life.....
This is the first time I have found a documentary on this lady . She must have been very beautiful to get by just on her looks and she must have thought she had hit the jackpot by bagging the top man . I think it’s a shame she ended up like that , she really didn’t deserve it .

I definitely believe she wasn't! Researching her was so nice because it revealed a very kind, generous soul who just happened to have cottoned on that she could use her beauty and sexuality to make a life for herself and her family. Hardly the scandalous harlot of legend!

It certainly wasn't! It was a weird position, historically, as it was also (usually) a political position that came with some power.

Anything of her personality is often swept aside, I think, in favour of the 'commoner mistress of the king' story of her. Like lots of people in history, du Barry was turned into a one-sided caricature.

😢poor Madame du barry. Her final years the french revolutionary killed her for no reason. She was one of them. A commoner who wanted to better her life. Surely they could have understand her position. For she could not say no to become a mistress to the king of france. Madame du barry was probably the most kindest woman in france. It was the people who hated her because she was beautiful, favourite in court and was beloved by the king. She held a lot of strength to go to Versailles and presented herself there. I say she was the bravest woman in Versailles.
I think a lot of the feelings towards Madame du Barry (and others in her position, who had raised themselves above their social station by using the royal family) were posited as even worse traitors, for taking money from the royal family that came from the common people, but not even having the naivety to think it was her place to take that money. Really, it just boils down to jealously, or at least it reads that way, in that anyone who had managed to make something of themselves in a way connected with the royal family were punished. Another woman who was viewed this way (although she escaped) was Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, who painted most of the famous portraits of the royals and nobles that we have today.

Does anyone know why she was disliked by Marie Antoinette? Was it because she was a commoner? Surely it can't be because she was mistress to the King of France? My understanding is it was "expected" for the King of France to have mistresses. Something like that would be an accepted position by the court.
It was a mixture of the rumours of Jeanne having once being a prostitute (apparently having sex for money was different to being a mistress!), and the fact that she was a commoner. While the King had mistresses, they had to be both married and noble by birth, which of course, Madame du Barry wasn't. I think Marie Antoinette was quite swayed by the opinions of the King's daughters (the 'Mesdames') when she first arrived, and so was coloured by their opinion of Madame du Barry. A further issue was that the Mistress of the King was also something of a political role (the King's mistress tended to advise him on matters, Madame de Pompadour did it very ably), and Jeanne had no training in politics whatsoever.
I heard Marie despised immoral women due to having grown up with her father openly loving his mistress more than her mother, causing her much pain. Because of the hurt it caused her mother, this made little Marie develop a bitterness towards mistresses and unfaithful women which was why she later made sure all of her ladies in waiting were of the upmost morality.

Yeah, I wasn't a big fan of that film - although I get that they were (I think) trying to get a younger audience interested in that period of history, and it probably worked, and I can appreciate that. But it was very shallow on the history!

I think it was in case any illegitimate children were born from the affair with the King.
These children could be passed off as the children from an existing marriage.
These children were not allowed to inherit the throne.
A Marriage was beneficial on two fronts
Protection for the King & it protected his throne for his legitimate heirs.

I agree, I think her mother must have been attractive as well - also marrying while an illegitimate mother, which was impressive for the time. It's an interesting point. I think there's a certain element of when you're lower in the social order, these things become less important. And then there's also a possibility of an element of someone desiring a beautiful woman enough that they push aside the social errors like illegitimacy.

You're right, but in some defence of France, all countries of Europe (and other places) have, throughout different points in history, happily murdered children and adults of all kinds in the name of various things. It doesn't change how horrible the Revolution was, but France wasn't alone in committing atrocities, either. And apparently, they did have to speed her execution up as her pleas for mercy were actually turning the crowd, who as you say, were obviously moved by her terror. 🙁

Obviously at the time that wouldn't have gone down well with people who were starving, but at the same time she wasn't enjoying her life maliciously.
Finally some truth about dubarry, jeanne was kind, had the face of an angel and made an ageing king happy in his last days. Did not like the french movie dubarry, so many historical errors which made me disgusted with the actress who played her.I am from France this is my country's history, although I have France and Canadian citizenship. Called stupid as a basket by a british biographer, disgusted me. Thank you for giving Dubarry some perspective to those who watch this video. Johnny Depp performance and his speaking French was well deserved in the film, however I am very disappointed in how Jeanne was portrayed in the movie. All I know of her is from Sofia Copola's Marie Antoinette.
It's a very entertaining film, but it also frustrates me because so much actual history is left out! 🙈 I think if you look at that movie as being from Marie Antoinette's point of view, that is likely how she saw her. Du Barry wasn't very well liked by the court, but it's a shame in that in that movie she is nothing more than a sexy playmate for Louis XV, when she was a deeper personality than that in real life. But I think that goes for most people in historical films, usually! 😊

No worries, it's 'coiffure' (my pronunciation might be a little off 😉). It basically means an elaborately styled hair-do, and during the late 18th century in France they became ridiculous amongst the elite! Ladies would take a long time getting them ready, and in this case, it was the cause of her being late. 😊
