Hey Jonny, Thanks for reaching out with your radiant enthusiasm to our beginner’s minds. I’m nearly 69 now and I was filled with hope for a late life start with piano a few years ago when coming across your work. However I struggled to follow along as my brain felt as if I’d never get to a stage where I could keep up with the seeming light speed that everything moved at. I used to slow everything down to 75% speed and painstakingly write out the notes to the tutorials because it was hard to follow what notes were being pressed by watching your hands. Then I worked out that I just needed to break things down so there weren’t so many components to deal with at once. I went away for a several years and quietly studied classical music for sight-reading experience and can now understand and work on the expression in the easiest of Chopin nocturnes. Now I understand the two ‘voices’ of piano better. I do have difficulty memorising pieces and rely on sheet music but still long for the freedom exemplified in these beautiful tutorials. This week I’ve started again with this tutorial in particular and am thrilled to find its chunky content is now feeling within the realm of possibility (actually reminds me of the one you did on using a quartal scale in the way it frees you to explore the whole keyboard). I’m going to re-visit all your tutorials until I’ve internalised more basics and hopefully feel confident enough to join your classes. Sulyn

I started playing about 3 months ago and these lessons really helped me get my improv in blues and jazz off the ground. To the point where some of my extended family called me a "prodigy." Not sure if quite true but I can definitely say that Jonny has helped quite a bit and given me so many ideas to improve my playing. Thanks man
Perhaps a beginner who could break things down like Jonny has and understand and implement them on their own would be a prodigy. People who can comprehend and implement Jonny’s lessons are at least good students.
Observation: You changed the left hand in mid-lesson. First, you played it differently than written, then you changed how it was written. I've played for 50 years, and I improvise a lot, but I still found this useful.

I play (more or less) several instruments, but never had a key(!) to improvisation or piano. After 20 Min of following this lesson I was playing along that chords freely more than an hour now, my fingers hurt, but it's so satisfying - I honestly have to hug you!! :-)

Great video. My first piano lesson was Bmin7b5 to C6 arpeggios. B D F# A to EGAC.. I did it for years..still occasionally do. Doing the chords you are using will help piano learners to get away from just the root position. Having said that ..I did the Bmin7b5 for years..untill about 20 years ago; while practicing piano..I realized it was just stacked min 3rds. Of course everything come from the Major scale. B C# D# E F# G# A# B So B-7b5 is ( B ((b)D#) F# ((bA#)). or notes( D F Ab B) ..
As a beginner i really enjoy this tutorial lesson, maybe thats why i just found out that there is a small failure in it. After minute 03:12 4 on the floor the notes on the sheet are a g,c,d,f which is a G7(sus4), but Jonny is playing the 2 Chords from the beginning Cmay7 and G9(sus4). i wondered a long time and tried to play all the 3 variants of chords: Cmay7, then the G9(sus4) and then the G7(sus4) and it sounded as well. Is this a riddle and why is Jonny playing different chords like the notes on the sheet says?
Jonny very nice = I struggle keeping rhythm even with straight 4s with my left hand while improvising with my right. Any tips to get my brain to sync hands doing different rhythms? Thanks
Well, last year I bought a nice Roland piano and subscribed to Johnny's course. Learned the major and minor scales and major and minor 7ths in both hands. Even worked on some ultra-cool rootless voicings. Bought lots of books to make sure I understood the theory as well. But then, when it came time to do the improvisation stuff, nothing I did could come even close to sounding like Johnny or even come close to sounding good, either. What I improvised all sounded so boring that I just gave it all up. His improvisations seem so easy when you watch the videos, but I quickly discovered that even the simplest ones he does actually require a HUGE amount of background in music practice to get the right feel, coordination and timing. Pity, because I know if I had started when I was younger (I am 65 now), I might have had a lot of fun with it. I would have loved to have had an enthusiastic teacher like Johnny then. I realized that by the time I might ever get good the only people I will be playing for are fellow residents in a future retirement home or hospice. Not worth the effort. So, the piano and the books all collect dust now.
I don’t think u should give up! You can bring great joy in yr life & those in the retirement village u may not even end up in. Focus on simplicity and yr tone it will sing to yr heart & warm ya soul! I am old to & try really hard to push the old age never be good thoughts a way and enjoy the process! Good luck!
I’m 71 and started taking jazz piano lessons just a few years ago. I’ve had a career but am in semi-retirement now and devote most of my free time to practicing. I’m at a point now where I’m comfortable with chords and harmony and look forward to learning how to improvise over the next few years. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I’m hopeful that with enough effort and patience I will get there, and If I can, so can you!
Wonderful lesson! Is it possible to generalize that, in contemporary style, the best color palette for major keys is given by grades 1, 2, 5 and 7? If yes, is there a theoretical explanation? And what about minor keys? Thank you.
Love your stuff! I am having a problem figuring out how many right hand notes per chord with the basic progression. You broke it down for the turns, and it sounds like triplets. I understand this is improv, perhaps the notes per cord is really random as it is improv?
is easier if you understand basic music theory. I would recommend you join this Coursera course, Developing Your Musicianship, then you will be able to understand the things that Johnny is talking about :)
Total newbie here, got my piano last week (did prep on some theory basics beforehand tho). It took me about 30 mins to hone in the basic patterns in this video but my speed isn't quite there yet. My left hand tempo still tends to fk up when attempting to improvise with the right hand.
Generally when a chord can be notated in multiple ways, you look at its harmonic function to decide which one to use. Since this improv is in C ionian, the second chord is functioning as a V chord in an (admittedly simple) I-V-I chord progression. Therefore it makes more sense to notate it as a G chord in this case. If he started playing with that chord instead of the C chord, then you probably would notate it as an F chord and treat this as an improvisation in F lydian, which would then make it still be an I-V-I progression.

Very nice. I have a curiosity: scale tones 1,2,5 and 7 are the best for all major scales (or specifically C)?
It works for all keys, it's just that C major is the easiest key to learn and therefore also to teach in.

That C major 7 chord isn't the regular C major 7 chord, right? It is one of the inversion variants of the regular one.

Probably yes - voicings are extension to at chord, but grips are patterns to improvise with.
