Appreciate video content! Apologies for the intrusion, I would appreciate your initial thoughts. Have you heard about - Riddleagan Smart Hands Remedy (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is a good exclusive product for learning piano fast without the headache. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my old buddy Taylor after a lifetime of fighting got astronomical results with it.
Great video content! Sorry for butting in, I would love your thoughts. Have you heard about - Riddleagan Smart Hands Remedy (just google it)? It is a smashing exclusive guide for learning piano fast without the hard work. Ive heard some great things about it and my mate finally got excellent results with it.
WOW, this style of teaching is EXACTLY what I've needed! A complete yet succinct overview, giving ME control to identify areas of weakness and dive into them. With highly capable learners that have a decent but patchy foundation of understanding, so much time is wasted by trickling information in a sequential manner. This demystifies the more advanced levels that I haven't gotten to yet, but now have in my sights. THANK YOU!
I love the way you break this stuff down and demystify it for classically trained students. It would be awesome if this exact progression of lessons existed as a 'learning track' on your site. I just picked up a membership recently and am having a ton of fun with the 'How to Improvise With The X Scale' courses.
This might be the best jazz outline video on TH-cam. Might be worth mentioning that each step would take at least a year of daily practice to get proficient though. 😅
I am an older guy who listened to all kinds of music during my life, and now, I am beginning to learn the inner workings. I have just learned to play the 12 majors and the notes on the staff. Your example of these jazz sounds was excellent, especially tying the sounds to the known players who used them. I found this video to be encouraging, if a little daunting. Because my dad is now 101 years old, I know that I will have decades to get this down, along with a firm foundation in classical. Well done.
I went back to playing classical piano and hit a great many 7th chords both in the Classical and Boroque period pieces. So I may take a break and relax with some jazz after listening to your 10 steps video. I am sure it will help with the Classics I am tackling too. I just wish my brain were as sharp as before - now that I have hit 74. You play wonderfully so -thank you for your fabulous, exciting and inspiring video, Jonny.
Great lesson, Jonny. I realize, your lesson is just a survey but it should be note that to become proficient in any one of the techniques you covered, especially the later ones, we're talking countless hours and hours (or months and months) of intense practice. So, I like that you refer us to your courses on each of the techniques you demonstrated.
I’ve been looking at vids for past few months (and to likely to convert to paid membership). FINALLY someone is able to put so much critical AND essential info in one vid /lesson plan. This is my 3rd video watching of yours, and may be the clincher $$.
If you become a member Johnny will bring it together for you like a jigsaw puzzle due to the strong foundation he gives you then you just work things out on your own but with the free stuff you have to be super talented to reach that stage
This was exactly what I’m looking for! This video inspires me to learn jazz (a dream come true). I’m signing up to learn as a complete beginner! See you in there Jonny!!
HOLY COW……you sure know your stuff but more importantly here, you are an AMAZING teacher. I need to join today so I can LEARN from you. I’ve had theory classes up the Kazoo but never learned as easily as I can from you. SO HAPPY I FOUND YOU!❤️❤️❤️👏👏👍🏻⭐️
Amazing 🤩 this is so good to know where I am in my playing and what I need to do. I tend to play 7th chords in the different inversions on my right hand and might add a run. Kinda randomly to be honest but occasionally hit some nice sounding stuff. This explains what is happening and really helps me on the theory. Thanks loads!!
Impressively comprehensive and clear video (though it does not cover scales). Now the trick is finding 5-10 years to practice and burn these into your brain!
You don't have to complete each step perfectly to move onto the next step. Some keys will always be harder than others, only because you will spend more time in certain keys. I actually started learning jazz at step 6 (A and B voicings) because I needed to play with others in class immediately. The teacher gave me those to just to get me started. Do I know all my minor scales in every key instantly? No, but that doesn't keep me from playing and having fun while I learn more.
Cheers for the video content! Excuse me for the intrusion, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you ever tried - Riddleagan Smart Hands Remedy (Sure I saw it on Google)? It is a smashing one off product for learning piano fast minus the headache. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my cousin after many years got great results with it.
I studied classical music (clarinet 8th grade), majored in music in high school, then picked up sax and jazz piano to learn jazz... you have just summarised what probably took about 2 years of weekly lessons and practice to learn in 20 minutes! But it would still take years of practice to just to get a basic grasp of everything in this video... I reckon about about 4 of your steps per year (1 step every 3 months), so give the average person 2.5 years?
Very nice video, I can check out my skills and make a study plan training item by item. I see you can swing from the level one. Thank you for this generous master class.
OMFreaking G! I thought I was doing well and almost there. Then I watch this and realized I’m still light years away. Of course I’m familiar with the concepts at each Step, but that’s not the same as knowing.
Just want to say to all the beginners watching this video and many others . Like if you don’t know your theory past major chord minor chord major scale minor scale ( like myself when I started to really try and learn ) then don’t get discouraged if it ever feels like this is impossible or that you’re not capable. To those people I would like to encourage you to focus on your theory . I know it sounds lame and boring but it helps sooooooooooooo much. You have to learn the jargon and all that . I huge help for me was Barry harris diminished sixth scale. I would start there with the family of dominants and watch and try any Barry harris video and don’t give up . It feels like a huge waste of time for a very long time and then it starts coming together and soon you will be wondering what was so confusing before
Wow it sounds just cool .. it sounds really professional and built right you made me want to start taking the subject seriously until now I felt I did not know where to start but hearing you explain it gives a sense that it is possible if good will and investment .. Thank you
I am a little bit confuse with this things. Jonny, if you can talk about the Barry Harris jazz armony and about the 6th disminished chords, like Barry Harris teach, the bebop, and how to improvise with those things. Thanks.
From what I remember (I never took the time to practice enough to be able to apply the concept), you use the 6th diminished scale to harmonise a melody by playing a different chord for each note at the top. The reason it sounds good is that the chords alternate between diminished chords and 6 chords, which is functionally equivalent to having V - I resolutions.
00:51 Step 1: learn the major scales

07:39 Step 6: rootless voicings
09:08 Examples of rootless voicings
09:36 Step 7: block chords
11:13 Examples of block chords
11:43 Step 8: drop 2 chords
13:03 Example of drop 2

Dude, you just summarized knowledge that takes years to assimilate into a few minutes video... Amazing!
The drop 2 chords gave my ears literal eargasm :DDDDD
This might be the best jazz outline video on TH-cam.
Might be worth mentioning that each step would take at least a year of daily practice to get proficient though. 😅
Thank you! Yes playing well takes time:)
Jonny, I like the way to resume hard jazz harmony concept in such a short time with easy words Thanks for all. You demystify a lot of things.
This single video put everything I know about music theory into context. Thanks so much! Excellent teaching skill, not to speak of piano skills!

Best Jazz step-by-step explanation ever

I have work to do! Thanks so much for breaking it down for those of us who took just regular old piano lessons.
Thank you so much, Jonny. You are just great. A pity that I am not your neighbor, or else, you will be my tutor.

When I heard the block chords I was in love
WindBringsMemories totally, have wanted to know how to get that sound for years!
It was the upper structure chords for me

Jonny how long will it take to master these ten steps? Those upper structure chords are really nice. They remind me of the Perry Mason theme.
Great information Johnny! Well taught!! Very useful for inspiring musicians!

Absolutely wonderful maestro!
Thanx, Maestro. 🔥🌹🌹🔥
Great camera and screen set up
Great!!!! in other words: leaving classical harmony, any note serves to harmonize in jazz
That is really helpful Thanks a lot❤️

OMFreaking G! I thought I was doing well and almost there. Then I watch this and realized I’m still light years away.

Let’s be realistic for a moment. Jonny, how long going through all these lessons (in 12 keys) will take? 😀
Check out our 1 Year Practice Plan! pianowithjonny.com/piano-lessons/jazz-piano-1-year-practice-plan/
Amazing video
Thank you so much Jonny ! I feel like I now know how to structure my jazz piano learning journey 🙏
