    Alan Watts (1915-1973) was a speaker of over 400 talks and wrote 25 books in his lifetime, most concerning eastern thought and philosophy. He was was profoundly influenced by the East Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Buddhism, and by Taoist thought, which is reflected in Zen poetry and the arts of China and Japan. Alan Watts taught at the Academy of Asian Studies in San Francisco, and gave regular radio talks on KPFA, the Berkeley free radio station. In 1957, he published his bestselling Way of Zen which started his rise in popularity. He was an early subject in pioneering psychedelic trials, and, after recording two seasons of the public television series Eastern Wisdom and Modern Life, traveled to Japan several times and became a foremost interpreter of Eastern thought for the West.

    I can't tell you how many times during any given week I think back on this very clip, then begin to stumble on self referencing myself because the deeper idea here, that we emerge from ourselves, is one of those kind of things that can really eat up bandwidth if you let it. Of course, it also opens the Pandora's Box of how much we can physically lose and still be us. (The ship paradox)
    At any rate; where does this specific version of this audio reside on the Alan Watts site? (I intend to buy it, naturally.) I am having an awful time trying to find this particular recording...

    So Sam Harris ripped off Alan, it seems. Oh, well...

    • @ZacharyFinch
      @ZacharyFinch 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a very old sort of notion with many paths leading to similar realizations, only expressed in different ways. It’s possible that Harris echoed this from Watts, but it’s also quite common for people to realize this independently, sometimes in the strangest of ways.

    Unfortunately, this snippet does nothing to dispel the illusion of the ego. At best, it dismantles the juxtaposition we commonly place between our bodies and the environment, though only functionally in terms of survival. To make this point, however, Watts has to invoke an ego that can survive. The ego, as the thing "trapped" within the body - the "I" that possesses the body - is still just that, and Watts continues to speak in terms of possession throughout the clip, only now the ego possesses the environment as much as it does the body, because there is no functional distinction between them.
    Also, the claim that the feet and head go together, and are thus a single organism, is a claim no one would disagree with. It in no way helps to understand the claim that a bee and a flower are a single organism, because this is a very different kind of co-dependency - it is a mutualism, not a physical restriction. Surely what was meant to be suggested was that our body "goes with" the environment it requires to survive? But this is not a mutualism, since the environment doesn't really need humans (on that note, there are more pollinators than just bees; only some species of plants truly "need" bees).
    I don't think this clip is as profound as people appear to think it is, but perhaps I'm missing (multiple) something(s).

      The ego is natural, the video advocates for a world of no ego where you feel connected to everything around you but that is not possible, the only way to survive is having certain ego, is not possible to not have ego and think of oneself as oneself that is separated, the ego exists so we fight for our lives and our things with strengths, otherwise thinking you are one single organism with the universe with not help at all with survival
