Alan Watts (1915-1973) who held both a master's degree in theology and a doctorate of divinity, is best known as an interpreter of Zen Buddhism in particular, and Indian and Chinese philosophy in general. He authored more than 20 excellent books on the philosophy and psychology of religion, and lectured extensively, leaving behind a vast audio archive. With characteristic lucidity and humor Watts unravels the most obscure ontological and epistemological knots with the greatest of ease. - deoxy.org/watts...
"Inability to accept the mystic experience is more than an intellectual handicap. Lack of awareness of the basic unity of organism and environment is a serious and dangerous hallucination. For in a civilization equipped with immense technological power, the sense of alienation between man and nature leads to the use of technology in a hostile spirit---to the "conquest" of nature instead of intelligent co-operation with nature". Paco Márquez but you’re important. Don’t be so modest. Don’t confuse yourself with individualism

    • @caglarization
      @caglarization 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Important, with regard to what, regarding to what values, and for whom? and what is the definition of 'important'? "Modesty" is very wrongly regarded to be weakness or insignificance in Western culture. Worse still, avoidance of modesty through bad advice such as given by Schroeder easily turns into arrogance and snobbish behavior. Alan Watts and all Eastern philosophies and teachings that he mirrors is for extinguishing and relinquishing the ego. "Being important", on a collective level, paves the way for societies and foreign policies to be driven by hubris. Check any historical archive, narration or academic literature... More often than not, attitude is the problem.
Obsessed about powering over the other, other being another family member, a "friend" in the neighbourhood or in another city, country... Obsessed about control and domination and narcissistic self-love that literally kills and maims so as to be "important" or to educate and civilize the other at the barrel of a gun... This is the classic white man's burden as the history nerds would quickly tell you... "You are important"... yes, self-worth is necessary to basic survival and not to commit suicide and happily contribute to common good and laughter. However, the West de-emphasizes the society and sanctify the individual too much... you are important? old wine in new bottles... what good did you bring to this world to be important?
According to the philosophy of Zen, Tao or to the outlook of Alan Watts' books and videos at large, you are important like and as a tree is to the world... nothing more, nothing less... but if you do not get aware of your urges, emotions and thoughts and lose the space between your real self that is to get aware of your thoughts and emotions, then you become your desires and irrational fanatical urges... that may go as far as to the Hitler's imagery and vision of the world. Hitler was definitely an important guy for himself.
World domination is not unrelated to how one perceives himself/herself and others. Just look the at the state of world mostly misled by Western psychosis of control... Self-anointedly Important and aggressive men of the West is outright predator that is happy at its sheer inhumanity and killings through which he becomes important... A society shorn of all values, nothing of good substance but competition, individualism, hedonism and materialism.... not that the latter ones are always bad, but their championing to the neglect of other values that needs to be added to fine-tune such as sharing, respect, compassion, understanding, compromise and law-abidence, and yes of "modesty" leads to destruction and a self-anointed sick importance... that is way below even animals... Alan Watts, although passed away, is still an eye-opener to the cultures who are unconsciously very controlling and domination- and violence-loving... Unlearn your wrong tenets...
Mr Schroeder, the video may be deeper than you may think it is. Unrefined, or lets say, out of tune individualism, control, competition and powering over nature, animals and other humans goes against our true nature. You seem to be desperately and "importantly" embedded in the problem itself. Please do not poison Marquez who truly got the gist of the video. If you are not open to question your social conditioning even a bit, why do you wander around these videos anyway?

This piece came at a perfect time in my life. It helped me to find the thorn that was poisoning my life for years and years.
I love people and sincerely want them to be happy. Yet I am afraid of them and need to control them to feel safe. To love is to admire, to love is to allow people to be spontaneous and beautiful, to be themselves. This paradox of needing to control the uncontrollable was giving me a huge internal conflict.
I still have a long way to go but first time in a long time I feel like I finally found the right path.

Power is the illusion. Harmony is the truth. People live their whole lives trying to control everything. Everything from family to their surroundings. Letting go of the illusion of power/control allows you to truly enjoy life. Not having to worry about every last detail. Not living in perpetual fear. This is what those who want to Control humanity fear the most. People letting go.

This concept parallels how I now choose to invest my heart and soul in my soul mates.
"This seems a sort of paradox to say this, but the principle of unity, of coming to a sense of Oneness with the whole of the rest of universe, is not to try to obtain power over the rest of the universe, that will only disturb it and antagonize it and make it seem less One with you then ever. The way to become One with the Universe is to trust It as another, as you would another, and say, 'Let's see what you're gonna do.'"

As I hear it, letting go of control, does not mean do nothing. It is to adapt and embrace. It is to know that you are surrounded by the mystical oneness of the world around you, and that the "real you" is as much a part of cause and effect regardless of your conscious course of action or lack thereof.
Adapt, grow, never stop learning. Become the strongest person that you can be mentally, physically, emotionally.

I thought..yes..that should be true, but how do I come to that point with a specific problem?
A few weeks ago, I discovered I have an OCD and finally and immediately I understood what he meant. I just can't control it and with this knowing and the acceptance for me WITH it and the acceptance I can't control it, I can. It's mindblowing. Thank you universe (and Alan Watts)!

There is deep power in powerlessness. How many people, on both a macro and a micro level, become victims of their own illusion of "power"? Trying to "control" can be quite stressful, allowing all kinds of negative emotions to enter your life and disturb its simple peace. As a believer in One God, I would say so many problems in life can be solved by trusting in the Creator, knowing one's limitations and trusting in the One Who created us and controls our lives but at the same time is Merciful and wills the best for us.

Man...Alan Watts is THE best teacher I've ever had in my life.
Terrence McKenna is a close(very close) second.
Both these men fused massive intelligence with a sense of wit, humor, joy, and pathos.
I was raised Catholic, became 'born again' in highschool, and an atheist in college.
It wasn't until I let go of ALL religious concepts that my mind was open enough to look at reality with fresh innocent eyes.
Only when I let go of religion, did the aching beauty of life become crystal clear.

I agree with that in principle. As it turns out, any energy put into an action in one direction will have a response in equal force in the opposite direction. I like to study chakras because it addresses this principle. Nothing is black or white, it is always both depending from where it is looked at. Nobody is always good or always bad... Although there could be some overtones depending on environment (mental and physical). Cheers!

I am allowed a level of power and control and therefore there is a choice before me to engage. I can take part in life, in the act of creation though never absolutely control. I truly own nothing I see around me. A time will come when people may be humbled and corrected, if they had believed otherwise or even acted as though the truth were otherwise. There is a time to engage, to control only what is given to us and a time to recognise that a force greater than us is taking away whatever those things may be. I have seen ceaseless creation and destruction since I first knew anything. yet I have been asked to engage since I have appeared in this place with all the tools required for the game. So I play the game, I control what is given to me to control and hopefully I see the wisdom to attempt no more.

One problem with depression is that you try too hard to rectify the problem and by that, we focus on every small detail and try to change its operation. We need to relax and delegate more but obviously that is easier said than done when your perspective of everything is bleak.

It's almost like it cannot be done. You try to see things the same way as everyone else, but it doesn't seem right to you. Every part of your mind is pulling you back into doubt about everything, no matter how hard you try to struggle out of it. Thats how I imagine it to be for people with depression. You can't look at the world any other way other than your own bleak, dark way (that life and everything in it is ultimately worthless).

No matter how much it is well explained to me, or how much learn about anxiety and it is not dangerous. It only relaxes me a small amount of time. And it just keeps coming back. Even though I am 99.9% sure it is just anxiety, it is just so severe that I can’t help myself with the thoughts. One thought creates another and another and another, and this feels like it happens in miliseconds. Deep breathing, focusing on something else, all becomes bullshit. I just can’t ease myself. And it tears me apart. Some people sit down and cry when they have anxiety or something. I can’t even do that. I just go through a hell that I can’t find how to get out. It feels like I nightmare that I know it is a nightmare, but I can’t wake up from it. So distrubing, so much… then I binge drink, or take loads of benzodiazepines which only helps in short term but in long term has no help, or even making it worse. I couldn’t find the key to the peace for a long time without substances. And it feels impossible for my brain to function without them. I know it is wrong, but it is so.

Also very important to realise is that even the most unpleasant or 'evil' organisms are playing a vital role. You can not have 'good' people without 'bad' people. You're ALWAYS going to be coming across 'bad' folk, or 'lower frequency vibrations' or whatever you like to call them. For the absolutely fundamental reason that whatever position of perspective you are in life you can always look up, down and around, and to know what 'up' is necessarily requires the view of 'down' to exist.

MsChrissybeast This is a common misunderstand. It's easy to think that "letting go" means lay down and just wait to die. But really all it means is to trust, there is a big difference. Now this is just one dimension of what "letting go" means to truly understand the rest, you must realize them yourself. But for a short comments sake I'll leave you with a quote with the hopes that it would make more sense to you "Last night I lost the world, and gained the unniverse" - JoyBell C

The best way I could explain it is, when one is rigid and attempts to hold on to his form he will eventually crash and break into pieces, when one is formless they can't crash and break into pieces. Though it is probably counter intuitive to think there is an exact meaning to it, its probably the only way to get anyone thinking in the right direction.

He says in another lecture, that the battle between cells inside your body may seem violent and destructive at that level but without that you wouldn't be healthy - as such disorder at one level in life is harmony at another.

I remember the first time I experienced the dissolving of the idea that I was a separate "thing" inside a universe that was "out there."
I was 25 and had just gone through a bad breakup with a girl I lived with for 3 years.
    I was crushed...utterly broken.
So...I went to a hill overlooking my city to sit and think.
After awhile, the difference between things "happening" and things that "I"..."did" became undifferentiated.
I felt like an infinite emptiness holding, in love, all reality within me.

by nature it also means human being. from my past i cannot thrust human beings, i fear most of them. i always fear friends will attack or abuse me someday, i always fear i will fail and that failure is a sign to stop trying. its a cycle of giving up.
but what i dont lack is to keep trying to break this barrier, i keep trying to do the things i want or need to do, since they are the things that would actually improve my life. those are the things that would better it.
thing is, i fear it, i fear to do what i want or need to do. my whole mind fears whatever i want or need to do. i keep having panic attacks, blackouts, or a feeling of total failure. i keep looking for the answer to what would stop that fear, that insecurity, anxiety and self-hatred of failing constantly. i wish it would replace itself with positive feelings.
well, this feels like a step, because even a change of thought can be a step. i dont want to be a failure i want to be someone who is proud of himself. "a master has failed more times than a beginner has even tried" is a quote i keep coming back to. i will fail many times and i will fail even more, but at least im doing something, at least im taking a step.

I prefer it this way. Music is truly beautiful, which is very fitting for Alan Watts. In fact, he actually talks about music. I think that you should listen to what he has to say. I don't know what speech it is, or else I'd tell you.

Stop controlling means stop planing and trusting that the next thing right in front of you is what needs to get done.
And you will only get one thing at a time, but don't postpone because then you are interfering with the natural flow.
Try it for a few days and see how it feels!
    Cheers!

All I'm saying is that I think that over time, after wasting so much time, energy and money for no benefit whatsoever (other than learning a lesson). I am just not willing to spend much time with people who complain and gossip all the time. Their whole "I'm a victim vibe" has run its course & I prefer to spend my time a little more wisely. In reality, there is no need to judge as good or bad, because things just are. But it doesn't mean that we need to direct our energy randomly. Reason helps.

Thats the beauty of it, iwhether you did or didn’t in the past it’s irrelevant. Past does not exist, its a phantom or ghost. All it takes is now, do it now. Easier than turning on a light switch & then you will discover the magic~ things will happen wonderful things-things that felt improbable to you begin to manifest themselves in an instant, when i mean improbable things i mean good wonderful things because you are having a loving relationship with the world.
When you antagonize the universe and oppose it, or try to overly control it, itl be less one with you than ever. Work with the universe let it knoe what you desire and trust it to deliver and be loving, as if you already received it. The universe will begin to conspire with you if you begin to have a loving relationship. Don’t control-Direct, Big difference, direct is like ok this is my objective face that way and go, dont worry about how it comes to be or try to control it in little ways. FLOW WITH IT, youl arrive at your destination even if you think the universe is going the wrong way, its not. Just swim with it and ul end up at the shores if your desired objective. And it brings you there in the fastest possible way it can from your position despite how it looks ti be going in the opposite way.
You will be surprised how quickly things come To you despite you thinking the universe is fkowing the wrong way lol. It works.
