    I'm considering the 2020 CB 1000R for the specific reason that it is much easier to get to the engine. And the bike uses the older CBR1000RR engine I believe the exact one in this video, so the price tag is about 5,000 dollars less than a current gen CBR1000RR. I understand the suspension is not capable as a race bike, but thats not what I'm looking for anyway. Seems like a great bike, I'm hopeful.

    When checking clearance did you havd to loosen Cam tensioner first? Or check them with tensioner still in place?

    I don't think it's quality control at Aprilia when it comes to the valve shim tolerances - it's more about metallurgy of the head and valve seat. They can grind the journals and cams to an exact spec enough to use the same shim across a whole cam (no, this isn't them cheaping out as I first thought) but it seems like the valve just peens its way into the seat more quickly. I think apriliaforum user Acamus has torn down a few near new bikes and found them to be in spec, but obviously most bikes could use a check (and adjustment) around 5-6000 miles. Supposedly the newer 2016-2017 bikes are already showing better wear in over the first service interval. Obviously 2500 miles on a 2013 with severely out of spec valves is pretty uncalled for though (along with whatever caused that failure) - and obviously Aprilia doesn't have their business as together as Honda. Either way great vid, thanks!

    hi mate great video,,, can u pls tell me whats included in a full refresh? im just a guy that changes oil and fuel lol so im genuinly asking hahha

    • @ShaunNielsen
      @ShaunNielsen  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. For a full refresh you should consider swapping out all fluids - oil, coolant, brakes and clutch, plus fork and shock fluids. Valve clearance, suspension pivot check and grease, chain, tyres, clutch plates... and if you want to go all the way you can do what I just did on my 2002 KTM 520 and split the cases to swap all bearings and seals. When you're done you have as close to a new motorcycle as it can be without actually buying a new one.

    I've just checked my 14 blade and all of my exhaust valves are at 0.27mm when they can go up to 0.33mm. 0.27 is still in spec but im not sure if i should adjust it

    • @ShaunNielsen
      @ShaunNielsen  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once I've already gone to the effort of opening the motor I will always adjust until they are as close to perfect as possible. Only reason to not do the work of pulling the cams is lack of time - or if a customer is okay with the clearances. If I'm doing the work on my own bike I will always go the extra mile.

    • @drewtaylor6997
      @drewtaylor6997 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply would you say they is a chance that my valves are going be okay untill the next valve inspection? I really don't want to remove the cams it looks a nightmare with how tight everything is 😂 you can't even get a marker in there to mark the cams lol

    • @ShaunNielsen
      @ShaunNielsen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@drewtaylor6997 Honda are very famous for good stable valve clearances. If you're reluctant to pull the cams, and the clearances are within the range you'll be fine until the next inspection interval.

    • @drewtaylor6997
      @drewtaylor6997 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's good to hear mate thank you. I'm happy aslong as it's safe to wait to the next inspection.
      1 of my intake valves are at the tightest limit and all of my exhaust valves are the exact same at the tightest limit.
      I was just worried incase they go out of spec say in 2000 miles time.
      I gues the book would say to adjust if its close to the limit if they didn't think it could last to the next check.

    Checking out my dads bike and I’m pretty sure the motor is seized, I have all plugs out and am trying to turn he crank clockwise. But it won’t budge. Am I missing something else to turn themotor or is it finito

    • @ShaunNielsen
      @ShaunNielsen  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the cam chain is worn its possible it skipped a tooth which could cause a valve to touch a piston. Try rotating the engine the other way to see if it moves at all. Go slowly, and if it does move you could be lucky enough to just need a new chain.

    • @davidsherman1389
      @davidsherman1389 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea it doesn’t move either way not even a mm. I told him it was most likely seized, it happened a few months ago while I was at school for Kawasaki and BMW. I guess he was expecting me to do some type of black magic since I work on bikes, I was just double checking Honda doesn’t have some special procedures..they seem to over engineer a lot of components
