    The San Diego buses, Coaster, Sprinters in North County, and of course, the trolley, have been a part of my life for years. Even when Ive had wheels, sometimes I used public transit to save money. Now in Tonasket, WA I'm watching this with pangs of nostalgia.

    When speaking about America's lack of trains, when compared to Europe, people often say that the country is so vast, with such great distances between different areas, that trains are impractical. I could not disagree more. The fastest trains can approach the speeds of aircraft, being around 400 mph, so that argument does not make much sense. Trains are also a lot more energy efficient, since they can plug right into the power grid, dramatically reducing emissions, and other fossil-fuel related issues
    I really appreciate how clean, quiet, and fast the San Diego Trolley is, and I like the retro look of the green trains. I wish American cities would go back to trolleys and light rail. I live in New York City, NYC had many trolleys before they were replaced by buses, but we do still have a very extensive subway system, and lots of commuter rail, as well as intercity rail. The Northeast Corridor runs right through the middle of NYC, which is the busiest rail corridor in the US

      Here in Austin we have terrible traffic. People are always complaining about it and fights have even broken out in traffic jams. Yet when someone says we should build a railway they lose their minds. Heaven forbid their shiny new cars end up being pointless!

With some re-engineering of America’s rail infrastructure, we can bring our trains up to speed (pun intended) and offer speedier service along our routes

    • @sportbikepilot
      @sportbikepilot 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Those are the quiet horns. They are very literally called "Quacker Horns" at SDTI because of the sound they make. The louder horn is called a "Federal Horn". The PCC cars, 1001 (U2), SD-100's and the S70 full length (3000 series) cars all have mechanical Quacker and Federal horns. The S70US fleet (4000/5000 series) have electronic horns that are essentially a PC in a box that plays .WAV files. It's called a TDSG.

      In the year since you commented, there’s new rolling stock on the MUNI light rail lines and progress is being made on the Central subway on Fourth Street to Union Sq.
      IMO, SF’s system covers more of the city (though not really north of Market Street); much of SD’s system is outside the city limits and service within city limits is limited to certain neighborhoods.

    Here's some fun, useless trivia for your next cocktail party...
    Alonzo Horton purchased 960 acres of land that became known as "Horton's Addition" and is now present-day downtown San Diego. As he was plotting land parcels within his new purchase, he recognized that corner lots were more valuable, so he made the blocks in San Diego much smaller than in other cities to maximize the number of corner properties he could sell. This street design impacts trolley operations. How?
    Because the Blue Line runs on C Street downtown, the trolley consists will never be more than three units long because, if they were, they would block the cross streets at intersections. The consists are about 240 feet / 74 meters long, and the city blocks range from 230 to 260 feet / 70 to 79 meters wide.

Yet, the tram has a nice design, smooth and quiet and appears to be used more than decently by the populace. I actually think it's somewhat stereotypical. The San Diego Trolley was the nation's very first modern light rail system, as the current Blue Line, which originally went from the Santa Fe Depot to the border was the very first modern light rail line in the USA. The reason why I say both the color (red) and name (San Diego Trolley) is stereotypical is because, when the San Diego Trolley was first put into operation in 1981, the PBS show Mister Rogers' Neighborhood was at it's peak, and they had a segment where they would ride into the Neighborhood of Make Believe, and they took the viewers there on a red trolley. It's my thinking that the MTDB, which ran the trolley in it's early years, chose the name and the color of the cars because of the popularity of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood back then.

    • @MrStevenjv
      @MrStevenjv 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I remember riding when the Blue line was new. Everyone called it the Tijuana Trolley.
      The first modern LRV's were a split order between Boston and San Francisco made by Boeing Vertol Corp starting in 1973 for use in already existing systems in both cities and a new subway line under Market St in SF. Boston's (MBTA) went into service in 1976 and SF's (Muni) in early 1981. San Diego's Trolley is also considered the oldest 2nd generation LRV system in the US. Meaning I suppose it was new, built from the ground up and with modern rolling stock superior to Boeing's problem plagued cars.

      San Diego mostly runs 3 car trains, except for off peak when two cars are normal.
      The stations only take 3 cars and a 4th car would block cross streets, so we're already near max capacity on some of the lines.
      We may need to grade-separate the Blue line.

      I can speak for San Francisco. It’s not practical to run very long trains within the city since our Muni Metro has to negotiate many hills. Plus it shares the road with cars. If it were too long it would take up more than one city block when it stops to pick up passengers.

    I don't want to sound ignorant, but from what I read about USA seeing trams or electric trains are rare. In fact train transportation is significantly worse compared to Europe. You guys hate electric tractions or something?

    • @Kevbot6000
      @Kevbot6000 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Terepin64 You only see it in major cities, just like Europe. The problem is that we don't have a good train system that connects the country. You usually just take a domestic flight or drive. Amtrak is slow and expensive.

    • @coyotelong4349

      +Terepin64
      A national rail system like most countries in Europe have just isn't viable when our country is roughly the size of all of Europe. We DO have a national rail operator, Amtrak, which provides service on some major cross-country and coastal rail routes, but on the whole in a country this size it's much faster to fly.
      At the local level, most of our cities themselves have decent public transportation just as European cities do.

    • @MrStevenjv
      @MrStevenjv 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Terepin64 - Worse compared to Europe, worse than Asia and worse than a lot of other places. America has largely always been car centric (except for the northeastern US, Chicago, SF which have old systems in place and now expanded that go back to the late 1800's). County, state and federal funding for public transit has been increasingly difficult to get for the last 20 years but in light of that cities like San Diego and LA have been able to expand their rail and bus lines. Calif's legislature just passed and the governor just signed a $58 billion infrastructure bill that will not only fix aging freeways but help fund public transit. Getting federal transit money from the trump administration is now highly questionable.

      This is the stereotype but untrue. Los Angeles was a rail city and was built by rail. Its first population boom in the 1880s came only after cross continental rail lines were built, and there was competition for passengers. We had huge passenger rail; the Pacific Electric Railway was the largest system in the world. What is true is that they were privately owned and could not turn a profit (outside of World War 2 when gasoline was strictly rationed). Cities where tram/light rail went over to municipal ownership EARLY continued to have those systems, which were never removed and continued operating (but did shrink markedly). I'm talking about New Orleans, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Newark. All moved to government ownership early on.

    So many people have been hit by those trolleys, part of the reason being that the horns on the new trolleys are fake, electronic, and cant be heard very far, they need to install reql horns on them again for safety. You can all argue that they must wait when the gates come down, but lets face it, people will cross them anyway if they dont hear a trolley near. They barely make any noise.

    • @adianchowdhury9016
      @adianchowdhury9016 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's actually a thing called 3rd rail electrification, however that could be quite dangerous to use outside of an enclosed subway system since there would be a powered metal strip running next to the rails and someone could accidently step on it (or slip into it in some more clever systems) and get electrocuted. There are some smarter systems that have the 3rd rail (as it's called) only powered while the train is directly on top of it, but that would be expensive to implement and in a city that already has a constrained transit budget, it wouldn't be worthwhile to replace the proven overhead wires
