DIY GREENHOUSE FROM OLD WINDOWS

  • Hi everyone! I hope you find this video helpful when you build your own greenhouse! The structure will be different for everyone depending on the size of windows, but its very easy to just adjust your spacing! The entire project cost me about $300 in lumber and about another $150 in drill bits, saw blades, screws, brackets etc. I wanted to do it as cheaply as possible which is why I use a lot of pallets and free windows i garbage picked! Make sure you tag me, @VintageChameleon if you have a greenhouse of your own! Comment below if you have any questions :)
    Thanks for watching!

    I am a single female with a homestead who has been collecting used windows for going on two years now. These windows are to build my greenhouse , yet I keep convincing myself I don't have enough of them, or some other nonsense as an attempt to procrastinate. But you have inspired me so much, that today, I start my greenhouse. I don't know why I was going into this video trying to find some reason to not like you and then realizing that I was in fact just being ugly and envious. Truth be told , you are pretty darn awesome and I can only hope my greenhouse turns out half as cute and functional as yours.Thank you!

      I'm happy to see anyone building stuff for their own. Why the implication that anyone wouldn't want to use power tools. Its like the same reaction when I told my co-workers/family that I wanted to learn how to stitch my older shirts back together.

    I always wondered how to start the foundation. Your approach is so logical and simple. I think I can do this. I also watched just "how you do thing" - your techniques for drilling, positioning tools, cutting the wood. Video shots are well targeted to the "how to do this" we all need to learn. Thanks a lot! Please keep sharing your ideas.

      Yes video was amazing! Great build. For me i would drill the holes for carraige bolts and then insert bolts into cement. It would make it easier cuz when cement is dry, just slip the board on. Loved your approach this this topic overall.

    Also, next time you want to mark your bolts, just get it lined up, and whack the board on top with a hammer. The dents can then be drilled! Easy peasy.... great video

    Thank you thank you!!! I've been looking and looking for someone to build 1 of these! You hit the mark on what I was hoping someone would do for my idea I've had floating in my head for a few years!!! We found a thick plastic type skid for a base, we don't have much space living in the city to build right on the property, & we put casters on the bottom to roll back into the garage for winter time. We have an 1880 Victorian and have finally removed all old windows. Which left me with tons of windows! Then where I worked, they updated all of their 1920 windows and I was able to snatch a few there too!!
    Wish me luck!! I'll post an after picture.

      @@GypsyJena66 It's for drainage. You can water indiscriminately without worry of water pooling on the floor and causing mold, mildew or slipping. All water will seep into the ground and flow out of the sides. It you have plantings outside of the structure it is a way to help with a passive watering system. Incidentally, you can do something vaguely somewhat similiar with gray water from your home if you are in a rural area. Have it pipe out to garden beds to passively water them. It's a water conservation method. Also, you can collect rainwater amd attach a drip system from it to passively water.

    To keep skunks from making a home under your greenhouse, dig a three foot deep trench around the outside, staple chicken wire to the bottom plate, lay the chicken wire in the trench, then backfill with dirt. You're welcome.

    • @TheRebelmanone
      @TheRebelmanone 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You are hilarious, you say "under your greenhouse" lmao. There is no floor dude, if the skunk digs under the wall then it is simply inside the greenhouse and it can't make a home there since she walks in and out of the same space you claim a skunk will make a home. The skunk won't do it because it will figure out that the space is being occupied.
      But hey, i would have installed the wire anyway, to keep out anything that thinks it wants to dig its way inside, especially things that will eat the food growing there. And, if a skunk thought there was a floor to live under, that i won't walk inside my greenhouse and get a surprise spraying.

    • @TheOriginalFreak
      @TheOriginalFreak 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@TheRebelmanone i believe Jack pine Savage was utilizing what we who paid attention in class call a colloquialism.
      Something I also learn while not getting laid in high school was that skunks and other 'varmints' often live in 'burrows' which are holes dug in soft earth.
      These burrows can at time be located only inches below the ground cover (such as with root eaters, like moles) or feet underground (such as living quarters for gophers). Thus the recommendation to dig the tench three feet deep, as this has be found, both anecdotally and scientifically, to be a sufficient depth to deter the vast majority of varmints in the vast majority of environments in North American from burrowing into areas in which a varmint can be, to say the least, not wanted.
      Skunks are omnivores and thus will LOVE a greenhouse where they can not only find attractive fauna to consume, but will also love the juicy worms located in what I can only assume will be living, healthy soil located somewhere in the greenhouse, be it in a compost bin, the pots, or even just in the soil serving as the floor.
      Further, skunks like places to hid and greenhouse that is only occupied by humans during the daytime, and then only on a very infrequent basis, is an IDEAL location for a skunk to hang out.

    • @TheRebelmanone
      @TheRebelmanone 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheOriginalFreak You could have just told us you learn from experience, and stand on the shoulders of giants, instead of admitting you never got laid. lol
      But like i said, i would install the barrier anyway, if the place has a wooden floor or no wooden floor.

      Love your idea to prevent future problems like that but the chicken wire my Pop used rusted over the years wherever it touched the wet/dirt and we finally replaced it with rust-proofed, coated thicker wire fence panels cut in half length-wise. Had to to keep the dogs from killing the chickens. Now I have some good replaced windows in my garage for this kind of project but it would look odd in my back yard.

    Now that is just to cute! Gooooood job!!! I am planning a greenhouse in the future myself using cattle panels. I told hubby and the daughter this is what I wanted for Mothers day since they always ask what I'd like. Enjoy!!!

    Absolutely Fantastic. You are who I imagined myself to become 40 years ago; unfortunately; my prior career as a nurse, prevented me from acquiring any building skills during the little free time I had between exhausting shifts. I have a drill & circular saw and a few hand saws; I "think" [hope!] that I could accomplish a small project like this on my own. I would like to build 3 small buildings to start. A Outhouse/Shower/Bath area. A sitting/sleeping area. And of course, a Greenhouse. I too have been collecting windows for a few years, but really didn't have ANY idea of how to start and proceed. If I watch your demo a few more times; I should be able to proceed forward. Thank you very much. PS: No offense intended; but you have a very soft voice, and even with an additional speaker cranked up to 96 out of 100; I could barely hear you over the background music. Maybe no music except in the beginning and finale' of your videos? Thank You. pjp88029, who continues to survive in the desert!

    OMG. YOU are fantastic! I have been saving windows of all sorts for some time now and am almost ready to get started. I was not sure exactly how to do all of this and then I stumbled upon your video! I missed out on building it in time to start seedlings this year, but next spring will find me starting seedlings in my very own greenhouse. Although I have to say, I will be using the green roofing as opposed to clear. The Arizona sun here would kill anything I did if I used the clear! Thanks for the encouragement and inspriation AND GREAT job!

    What an AWESOME IDEA! It looks so cute and like a piece of art. I’ll show this to my hubby bcuz he wants to build a greenhouse but it seemed so expensive his way. I love the idea of repurposing things.
