Getting and being the champion has always been one of his character's throughlines. After Triple H beat him in that three stages of hell match at No Way Out, he likely started to have doubts about beating Rock to get the title, so the desire to have what was once his (the championship) made him take leave of his senses and make a deal with the devil. Sometimes, the reason is just that simple. Now, don't ask me to explain the Alliance turn, because that still confuses me to this day.
