Claire did the studio recording. I was commenting on the live version from the Pulse concert. Also, people deal with death in different ways. Some people do laugh at it. The laugh was in relation to the janitor they asked at the studio and him saying everyone has to go sometime.
I was at one of Pulse concerts at Earls Court. The girls performed the 1st half wearing white, after a short interval, wore black for the entire 2nd half which included a full unbroken play through of Dark Side of the Moon as well as the encore. Love the hair

Clare Torry, the female vocalist in the original studio version, was brought in for this recording and without any prior exposure to the musical score and with no practice she laid that track down perfectly in one take. No more sessions needed for the vocal track.
Was actually 2 takes. The first one consisted of a few oooh's and aaah's and babies.... she didn't really like it so decided to go again.... and the rest is music history!

This one Pink Floyd song where a listen to the studio version is a Must. A little context; on the "Dark Side of The Moon" album this song follows "Time" where Time talks about life from childhood to death and how we waist so much of our time before it's too late... then "Great Gig in the Sky" is about dying and the stages grieving. In the studio version Clare Torry absolutely delivers in the emotion of the piece. These ladies did a fine job here but it doesn't compare to what Clare did. Do yourself a favor and go give it a listen, preferably after you hear Time, to get the full effect.
If you listen to the studio version you will get an idea of what they are trying to reproduce on stage. Which is what all live shows are about...reproducing the studio version of a song. The original (and best in most people's opinion is the singular voice of Clare Tory - who has the vocal range to match ALL these singers here!!!) is by far the better version. If you decide to listen to the studio version search for and listen to the remastered version as it has a lot of background sounds and vocals that add to the ambience to the track. Try it and I dare you tell me that Clare's voice isn't better...I DARE you.
The original version from Darkside of the Moon was performed by one vocalist, Claire Torry. You should really listen to that album from start to finish as intended, it tells a story but I wont spoil it for you.

You know lots of PF fans might have trouble accepting anything but the original; I would hope all PF fans had their ears, brains, and hearts open to these variations and very fine performances.
This is going to be a fun journey for you. Pink Floyd is my favorite band by a mile since I discovered them at 13-years-old nearly 30 years ago. It’s interesting that the 1994 Pulse concert is your starting point, but it’s a good one. It was among the first stuff I heard of theirs as it came out around the time I was just diving into their music. You should do songs from the Animals album too. You won’t find many live versions of it. But the 17 minute long “Dogs” and also “Pigs” and “Sheep” are favorites among several TH-cam reactors. Lyrically, it’s incredibly deep and complex but the musical composition is stupid good, especially “Dogs”. If you’re looking to stay with live stuff... You would also enjoy David Gilmour’s solo concerts from past few years (Live in Gdańsk, Live at Pompeii). He performs a lot of Pink Floyd stuff and some of his solo material which is not too far removed from the Pink Floyd style. “In Any Tongue” from Live at Pompeii is intense. And the light shows on all the recent solo tours are very impressive too. “Pulse” is an absolute experience. But really, nearly everything this band does is. I’ve sometimes wondered if they truly are other worldly given what how much magic they have created musically. 😅 Buckle up and enjoy the ride! 🙂🎵🎶

One of the things I've always found most fascinating about this song, and you point this out, is the difference and similarity of the voices involve. It all goes back to the original recording, which was done by "one" vocalist who had the magic in her voice to pull off the three different sounds - aided, of course, by the magic of the bands musicianship, and Alan Parsons' engineering. Can i assume that you've seen the full Pulse consert in which there's two parts. The second part which does the full Dark side of the Moon album, they changed to black for that..
This one Pink Floyd song where a listen to the studio version is a Must.
A little context; on the "Dark Side of The Moon" album this song follows "Time" where Time talks about life from childhood to death and how we waist so much of our time before it's too late... then "Great Gig in the Sky" is about dying and the stages grieving. In the studio version Clare Torry absolutely delivers in the emotion of the piece.
These ladies did a fine job here but it doesn't compare to what Clare did.
Do yourself a favor and go give it a listen, preferably after you hear Time, to get the full effect.

If you listen to the studio version you will get an idea of what they are trying to reproduce on stage. Which is what all live shows are about...reproducing the studio version of a song. The original (and best in most people's opinion is the singular voice of Clare Tory - who has the vocal range to match ALL these singers here!!!) is by far the better version. If you decide to listen to the studio version search for and listen to the remastered version as it has a lot of background sounds and vocals that add to the ambience to the track. Try it and I dare you tell me that Clare's voice isn't better...I DARE you.
The original version from Darkside of the Moon was performed by one vocalist, Claire Torry. You should really listen to that album from start to finish as intended, it tells a story but I wont spoil it for you.

All three of the girls were only told to sing emotionally the five steps of death. Starting with denial and working down to acceptance. It's very emotional if you don't get goosebumps with this you are your deadinside..

This is going to be a fun journey for you. Pink Floyd is my favorite band by a mile since I discovered them at 13-years-old nearly 30 years ago.
It’s interesting that the 1994 Pulse concert is your starting point, but it’s a good one. It was among the first stuff I heard of theirs as it came out around the time I was just diving into their music.
You should do songs from the Animals album too. You won’t find many live versions of it. But the 17 minute long “Dogs” and also “Pigs” and “Sheep” are favorites among several TH-cam reactors. Lyrically, it’s incredibly deep and complex but the musical composition is stupid good, especially “Dogs”.
If you’re looking to stay with live stuff... You would also enjoy David Gilmour’s solo concerts from past few years (Live in Gdańsk, Live at Pompeii). He performs a lot of Pink Floyd stuff and some of his solo material which is not too far removed from the Pink Floyd style. “In Any Tongue” from Live at Pompeii is intense. And the light shows on all the recent solo tours are very impressive too.
“Pulse” is an absolute experience. But really, nearly everything this band does is. I’ve sometimes wondered if they truly are other worldly given what how much magic they have created musically. 😅

One of the most incredibly touching tracks Floyd has ever produced and absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to replicate in concert. It’s about life. Birth, growing up, adulthood, growing older and death. The only lyrics are those in the very beginning, the muffled background voice of a misleading-aged man stating, he wasn’t afraid of dying... there’s no reason for it. Great reaction kid!

Respectfully, I disagree. Margaret Taylor and Rachel Fury are definitely talented but not in the same league as Sam Brown and Claudia Fontaine. Definitely just my opinion though and music is 100% subjective. Cheers to a fellow Pink Floyd fan regardless!

One of the things I've always found most fascinating about this song, and you point this out, is the difference and similarity of the voices involve. It all goes back to the original recording, which was done by "one" vocalist who had the magic in her voice to pull off the three different sounds - aided, of course, by the magic of the bands musicianship, and Alan Parsons' engineering. My personal favorite is the performance from "The Delicate Sound of Thunder" feature Rachel Fury - here's a link if you're interested...I believe she's the third singer, but not sure of that...

I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering, anguish and despair caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at Apple records prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The janitor stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Results are legendary.
