    Very interesting review, thanks for this!
    I had my first sip of the Select yesterday. It immediately reminded me of one late afternoon in the western part of Ireland, at the Atlantic coast. This was more than two decades ago, but I still remeber it very well. It had been a ver rainy day, but that afternoon the skies cleared up completely. People were burning peat in their stoves, and that smell was all around me. Together with the dampness and the last moments of sunshine, it truly was a unique experience for the senses.

      Thank you and I totally agree, Laphroaig for me has this wonderful ability to transport you to a place like that. For me, it’s the Scottish forests just because that’s where I’ve been more times but western Ireland is a similar place so we get very similar experiences from this laphroaig, cheers!

    Very interesting review. Personally, I‘d go with the Select since it has much of the typical Laphroaig taste for less money. Simple as that.

    • @WhiskyWars
      @WhiskyWars  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can’t argue with that! They’re both great whiskies but the select is cheaper and I think it’s the better daily

    • @Kvs-vf9nt
      @Kvs-vf9nt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What? It's literally 3 euro difference. Select 37 euro the ten 40 euro... So I don't want neither in Europe. Or it has to be CS 10. Or the Laphroaig QCask

    • @WhiskyWars
      @WhiskyWars  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ah that’s a shame, in that case I’d possibly go for the QC, love that whisky!

    • @Kvs-vf9nt
      @Kvs-vf9nt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@WhiskyWars Yeah the QC is very good. It's 57euro here so it's a good price for a nice scotch.

    • @blackberryblossom
      @blackberryblossom 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Kvs-vf9nt In that case, I´d agree. But in my country the select is more in the 32 € range, shipping included. Anyway, so far I know the select, the 10 and the QC and I like them all, so whatever is on sale...

    I picked up a bottle of select yesterday as it was on offer in Sainsbury’s. I’m new to whiskey and I found the select much more agreeable than the 10.
    As a newbie that same 10 taste but less spiky and the crème brûlée dessert notes are perfect.
    I’d recommend it to anyone getting into single malts.
    The only downside for me is that when I drink an Islay I want to feel like I’m sat at a campfire and the selects peaty smokiness is a little muted for me.

    • @WhiskyWars
      @WhiskyWars  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm interesting. Unfortunately intense peatiness in my opinion comes from younger more intense maybe spiky islays so it’s difficult to find that balance of a more rounded highly smoky whisky. I’d say maybe stay away from the ardbegs which have the intense smoke you might want but in my opinion they don’t have that smoothness/creme brûlée of the laphroaig select but lagavulins could be a good one to head into for that blend of what you want. I’d say the 9 or 10 years are smoother than the 8. The 16 is the smoothest but also less smoky.
      The caol Ila’s are nice less spiky islays with still a good helping of peat/smoke but less so than the lagavulins. I’m sorry I can’t help you more!
      The beauty of the laphroaig select is the price point, I’ve seen it in England for £23 on offer quite regularly so it’s a mainstay for me. Of course an idea could be to add a drop of something that is a little more smoky to your select which can actually make a nicer whisky to your tastes

    I had luck that my "gateway" peated whisky was Laphroaig 16 (was a gift bottle). Between 10yr and Select - I would always choose 10yr but that's more of a habit then anything else, but also I would rather choose Quarter Cask then 10yr

    • @WhiskyWars
      @WhiskyWars  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow what a gift! I have to say, That whisky is top of my dream list and I can see why you would think that. For me currently I actually think the 10,select,QC I prefer to the triple wood and lore. Sometimes I like the sherry in Laphroaig but most of the time I don’t. Thanks for watching!

    I'm enjoying my first taste of Select, over one rock. First blush- very pleased... it is not trying too hard to impress .. perhaps not as complex or memorable as some, but quite satisfying .. .....(Less expensive than the Dalwhinnie I've been used to, but I'm ready for this new (to me) Isle of Islay blend ..)

    Ok so I’ve come back to this now that I have the 10 and the select. Did the tasting along with you. Your tasting notes are pretty spot on. The dark chocolate, the butterscotch, the citrus….
    Dunno which one I prefer but damn I love comparing them.

    I have never been interested in the select. Here, the 10 or my favourite QC is often less so I just haven't grabbed it. Your Creme Brule note has me interested. Cheers!

    • @WhiskyWars
      @WhiskyWars  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh that’s interesting! So Select is not the Laphroaig’s entry whisky in Canada? I would say the 10 and QC are better if cheaper where you are then however I do believe the best “daily” is the select as it’s more subtle and sweet (within reason, still a laphroaig) having said that, I’d still recommend you try it! Cheers!

    Agree with the creme brulee on the nose and palate of the Select. And the herbal/citrus notes. Beautiful variation with L10's smoke. A bit too surgary for a daily but so delicious on a cozy evening at home. Cheers!

      Ah okay, maybe you would rather daily the four oak? I’ve just reviewed that yesterday on the channel if you’re interested in that, it’s far less sweet than the select so maybe more your thing?

    10 CS or none off those for me I like my scotch at least like tallisker levers off ABV so around 46% here in Eurooe the original 10 is 40% same with select. Th Q C is very good too at 48% abv. But the CS Laphroaig 10 still my favourite at 58,5 abv

      @@WhiskyWars i just bought the 10 CS Batch 13 recently, before i had the Lore and if i had to compare these two, id go with the 10Cs, it has more the medicinal character, but packs a punch in flavor, more into the citrus, sour raspberry, herbal note, combined that with laphroaig smoke and peat and an oak flavor is amazing. If i want a smoky sherry whisky, my fav by far is the Edradour Ballechin cuvee (you have to like a little rough soury/minty taste tho)

    How does the Laphroaig 10 compare to the Caol Ila?

    • @WhiskyWars
      @WhiskyWars  ปีที่แล้ว

      For me, it’s more peaty and smoky with more cigarette ashy profile. The caol ila still has those notes but not as strong and a bit more of a lemon/floral note, a little bit sweeter too. I hope that helps!
