    Now I understand why the way I've been doing it smells "off" after it sits in the bottle a couple of weeks. I was make room spray with mostly distilled water, only 20% alcohol, the fragrance and nothing else. It makes sense I need an emulsifier and preservative, thanks for sharing! Off to Amazon to order those.

    Thank you. This is a great room spray. It is worth noting that if you want a spray for pillows or clothing, the Witch-Hazel recipe is safer for the skin. Keep it in a low light spot & shake it.

    Nice to see that someone has given this some thought in terms of making a room spray and avoiding the cloudy mess you can get with some of the simple approaches. Well done Torera. Just one note of caution and that is not to use this for contact with the skin as recent research shows that Polysorbate 20 or 80 has worrying links to colon cancer and a whole set of deeply worrying allergic reactions. As a room spray there should be fine especially given the very small amount used. To think this used (and probably still is) as a food additive or in vaccines really makes you think.

Moreover, with the right ingredients to make your room spray at home. Not to mention that what you share in the video is also a formula to sell the room spray. Either way you helping us out to enjoy a product made at home a less cost than stores and with the ingredients that you concisely decide to have in your house. Thank you again and God bless you in your business.

    I cannot find the answer to this question I have anywhere. Hopefully you can give me an answer. In all diy recipes for soap or sprays, there is water in the ingredients. However as soon as water is added, the product becomes not shelf stable. Why can’t we use witch hazel or alcohol and essential oils alone as a room spray (or even add vegetable glycerin ), but just without water? What its the reason for the water instead of a more shelf stable liquid? . And if i mix only witch hazel and essential oils can’t that be used as a room spray and avoid the preservatives all together since both are pretty shelf stable on their own?

      Hi,did you ever get an answer for this,going through this right now,same question??? In a 2 ounce bottle I did 1/3 witch hazel 1/3 91 % alcohol and the last 3rd was poly 80 and fragrance.No water no preservative?

  • @persephonespomegranate
    @persephonespomegranate 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Oh my gosh THANK YOU for this! Subscribed 😊
    I have been learning how to formulate properly over the last few years (with the hope of one day - years down the road - starting my own skincare business) and was having a moment today - same as you - one of those, I may scream if I see one more “knowledgeable” TH-camr with hundreds of thousands of subscribers telling people that you don’t need a preservative because essential oils are self-preserving??!! Or witch hazel is the preservative 😬 Or they’ll say, put in a few drops of vitamin e if you’re worried. 🙄 And if anyone in the comments section tries to very politely correct the misinformation, they get crucified by other viewers.
    I can’t take it any longer! I am all about cutting down on chemicals (I switched to green skincare and home products a decade ago) but the more I learn, the more I feel that all-natural - at least, all-natural without a strong scientific background and access to laboratory testing - can be very dangerous and that “natural adjacent” is probably the best route for most home formulators, ie using some safer chemicals when the risks of NOT using them is greater than the risk of long-term exposure to that chemical.
    I’ll take the very slight possibility that something like Optiphen or liquid Germall plus or an emulsifier may build up negatively in my body over a lifetime than a good chance of getting a nasty fungal or bacterial infection from using unpreserved water-based products. I have a lung disease already and so the risks of breathing in spores (that you can’t always see with the naked eye and so may not realize it’s happening) is huge for me - for all of us.
    So, thank you for doing your part to spread real formulating knowledge 🙏🏻

      @@persephonespomegranate could I use rubbing alcohol instead of a spirit? And I have germaben already for a preservative. Would that be ok?

    • @persephonespomegranate
      @persephonespomegranate 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@keoshagaines3765 hi Keosha. Unfortunately, no. I say “unfortunately” because that’s the kind of alcohol most non-formulators have lying around the house but that is a totally different type of alcohol designed for medical use and not the perfuming industry, ie not designed for inhalation.
      If it’s 70% or higher - which all the isopropyl alcohol I’ve seen is - it should solubolize the oils into water but it may or may not perform the second intended function which is preservation (it may but it’s not a “for sure” and the average person isn’t investing in at home lab testing kits to monitor the safety of their products).
      But even if you were using your spray up within a few days and weren’t worried about an extended shelf-life, the most noticeable reason why you shouldn’t use isopropyl alcohol is - it stinks. It won’t evaporate quickly like proper perfumers alcohol which is really designed to “stay in the background” so you’ll smell more like a hospital than the lovely essential oil blend you spent all that time crafting 😂 It’s also very harsh on your lungs and nasal passageway to breathe it in (and very harsh on the skin so you definitely don’t want to make a body spray with it, either).
      Hope that helps. Perfumer’s alcohol is fairly easy to order online and not terribly expensive. If you’re in the US or Canada, let me know and I can post a few links. You can also use Everclear alcohol / grain alcohol which is more readily available and probably even cheaper - you can buy it at most liquor stores, I believe - but I’ve never used it so I can’t advise beyond that.

    Make sure to use poly 20, not poly 80. Poly 20 is for water based products like lotions, body splash, face mist, linen spray to help mix in fragrance oil. Poly 80 is for oil based items like emulsified sugar scrubs, bath bombs, bath melts, body polish. Or a fo/eo modifier can be used to keep the product clear, poly 20 will make the product cloudy. Liquid colorant can help hide this.
