Oh Cathy, I’m crying right there with you (and laughing too). We can only hope that when we make quilts for those we love and cherish is that they will love and cherish it. And I know your youngest will be able to tell the story of the graduation quilt with her little family, however that would look for her. It is a beautiful quilt and you both should be very proud. 🖤🤍
Not only are you an excellent quilter, thrifter, and colorist but your storytelling is right up there too ❤. I may have shed a tear or two along with 😅. Your daughter’s quilt is amazing - sometimes we forget that a simple black and white 9-patch can be just as beautiful as any fancy fully curated quilt new on the market and this quilt just proves it. Thanks again Cathy and Paul.
I love it. I love black. The thread choice was perfect. I am so glad you and your daughter had a great time together. Don’t ever apologize for your emotions.
When I am making a quilt for someone (particularly baby quilts for family), they know it is coming eventually (I always ask them what their theme or colors are). But very few have been made before the baby is born! They are understanding & appreciative (but we are in a season where I have 3 baby quilts on the list at a time)! Glad they are patient & appreciative!
Good morning Cathy, this is the best quilt story so far. I teared up with you 🥰 your daughter is going to have those same wonderful memories every time she sees, uses and snuggles in this quilt. This quilt is so beautiful and completely hers, in that these are the fabrics she chose, what a beautiful gift and memory for her to treasure. Great job mom! Have a wonderful weekend and hopefully that includes a little sewing. 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Cathy I love this for your family. I definitely get where the emotions came from because I have sewn and crotchet for many family members and the journey of picking fabrics and the right shade of colors was the true binding of the quilts. The thing my family loves is that I don't just make a quilt. I create a decor setting with pillows, quilt, crotchet blanket, photo frames, and other little dodads and thingamabobs to tie it all together. Boxed. Delivered/picked up. Opened. Space decorated. Thanks mom, sister, friend.
Cathy, I too have so much to say about your STUNNING memory quilt for your daughter! It is first like two quilts in one. I would humbly suggest that there is controlled “randomness “ in that there are so many different black fabrics 😊. I think your daughter will have those same memories. I do also I look at my quilt made by my grandmother over 60 years ago. And as a quilter myself I understand about the time line lag. Thank you for sharing not only the quilt but the beautiful story behind it. 🙏
Gorgeous, Gorgeous, I want one !! your daughter will cherish this quilt everytime she cuddles with it thinking, what a wonderful gift handmade with love from a talented mother ... gosh Cathy this is your best quilt story time video in my opinion, really touched me ,what a beautiful blessing you are ..
Thank you for sharing this special quilt story for your daughter. I cried with you. I'm in the finishing lap for my son's quilt made with 98% mens shirts. As I see it coming together I'm humbled and excited and feeling that emotion❤ I kept my son,who has art degree, in the loop as the quilt started to take form. It's been a two year work of love. Goal is to have it ready before Thanksgiving. Thank you for sharing and your inspiration ❤❤
No need to say sorry for your emotion, it's a gift that you make to us! What a chance we have to be told wonderfull stories like that! This quilt evokes a passion for mathematics and for astronomy... something very abstract and sort of dry, but the way it has been done, the travel that you made together is very real, sensitiv. In all, this quilt express the bigest secret of the Univers: everything is perfect, a mathematical harmony, everything is made out of love. Your daughter picks not only the perfect coulours, she also picked the best mom ever! ❤
Really, when I watch a quilting video, I don’t expect to cry, but here I am crying. I am so thankful that you shared this video. I have a daughter who is more traditional and her husband is mid-century so trying to come up with a quilt for her household is difficult. Because she lives three hours away, it never occurred to me to take her shopping. What a wonderful idea!! And she, too has a great eye for color and textures. I just all your videos but this one is special.
Cathy the quilt is fabulous! But more beautiful is the memories of you and your daughter gathering the fabric and every phase of the process of her quilt, absolutely precious memories 💕, many, many blessings 💕
That turned out wonderful!! Loved the backing fabric!! What a wonderful journey you went on with your daughter. This is a quilt with stories and it only has barely begun its own journey. Stories will be added along with laughs, tears, joy and grief. Lovely just lovely. Congrats Cathy. Have a great weekend.
Love the quilt!!! I really enjoyed working with my son to pick out the fabric for his quilt. However, when I gave it to him after I was done. He thought the label I made with the embroidered message was what made it the most special for him.❤
With the interaction between you and your daughter, the emotions are pure love. Thank you for sharing your/her story, the story of relationships, caring, loving, doing and being together.
First time commenting here. This is a beautiful quilt and story. I’ve watched many of your videos after first seeing you interviewed by Karen Brown (Just Get It Done Quilts). I’ve started a little pile of linen scraps and another of thrifted shirts as a result. Today I realized the couch you are seated on matches the chairs my grandmother had for many, many years. (And of course, coveting that beautiful Eames chair in the corner. ) Thank you for this channel and all of the fun. ❤
At last! I have been anticipating this quilt story for so long. Loved your softy mommy moment. The Colorist is a lucky girl to have such a dear, sweet creative parent in you. I'm sure she'll live up to the love, joy & imagination you two put into her quilt. I'm sure to watch this episode again & again. Take care, Kitti
Kitti, I knew if there was one person who loved this video, it would be you! ❤️ Thank you for your sweet comment and for always being such supportive and faithful viewer! I appreciate you so much! 🥰
Everyone should make at least one checkerboard quilt. it is amazing how the most simple quilt design can turn out so beautifully. The black and white quilt you've made for your daughter will be timeless because of your fabric selections. Thanks for sharing. Always enjoy seeing what you've been working on. How good does it feel to finish, yet, another one.
Jane, I agree wholeheartedly! It's just hard to beat a checkerboard quilt! And thank you--I'm usually working on more than what is reasonable at any given time! 😂 But, YES, my goodness it feels good to get another quilt done!! ❤️
Another wonderful video... another opportunity to cry at the wonders of loving our children and making connections with them as adults. As someone who knows how fast the next 10 years are going to go, and how much their lives are going to change, I can tell you this time capsule will become even more precious as a way to remember the "Before". Well done...
Perfect outcome for a special young woman who loves color, design and the universe. Love the mother daughter moments in the project that makes it so incredibly special for you both. Love that!!!💕
Dear Cathy, such a wonderful quilt and quilt story. I love the colors and the way you have choosen the fabric with your daughter . It got right into my heart and got me in tears. So beautiful and modern.
Thank you, AnnJeanett! ❤️ I'm glad it was meaningful for you---I think those of us that really put our hearts and souls into our quilts really "feel it" when we see other quilters who do the same! 🥰
It's so pretty! Now I want to make a checkerboard quilt too! I love seeing this quilt come together, and seeing how the story and process of your quilt for your graduating kiddo paralleled (and diverged from) my own.
Cathy, Precious Memories with your daughter is memories of JOY which makes the tears of appreciation of the time together and everytime she uses it she is wrapped in love and HUGS from Mama.
This quilt is personal and really perfect! I know you and your daughter are so proud to have it in your hands. Every time she snuggles in it or makes the bed, she will have warm thoughts of you and your hard work as well as the times you two were together shopping for fabric! A quilt made with sincere love is the very best kind! Congratulations, Cathy!
Thank you so much, Sherry! ❤️ And you are SO right--quilts made with love are the very best! I will say, though, that it's super generous of you to think that my daughter will actually make her bed! 😉😂
I really appreciate how you describe the process, details and nuances of your quilting. It’s a completely different way than how I do it, which is what makes quilting so infinitely fascinating and inspiring to me; it’s the beautiful spirit that permeates a unique quilt made out of love.
Nancy, I agree--there are so many steps and decisions to be made in every step of the quilting process, and I think every quilter does it differently, which IS fascinating and inspiring! Thank you so much for your kind words! ❤️
Oh what a beautiful gift you’ve given your daughter and yourself! Those memories will be with you forever! I just wish I had thought of that. All the road trips we (my youngest who’s now in Grad school) took to go look at out of state colleges could have been fantastic opportunities to shop for fabric lol
So, I binge watch your episodes every 3 weeks while getting my nails done. This was, by far, my favorite episode. It put a whole new spin on memory quilt. But, no fair making us cry. My nail tech didn’t understand 😂
Oh Cathy...all the feels! I made a collaborative quilt with and for my daughter's college apartment and she still keeps it on her bed 6 years later. Such great memories of that summer together. ❤ Thank you!
What an awesome quilt! Love the fact that you have memories of picking out the fabric. My daughter is about to graduate from college and I'm planning on making her a quilt also. This video helped me realize to not be in a hurry and to get her input along the way.
Thank you so much! ❤️ And I'm glad the video gave you some thoughts about making your daughters quilt---I hope you both get so much enjoyment out of the process!
Thank you, Anne! I don't know about you, but I wish my local quilt store had the ENTIRE line of Speckled, Thatched, and Spotted and I could just go in and touch and see every color for myself! Wouldn't that be amazing?🤩
I really love the front but I could not wait to see what you chose for the backing!!!!! And then I cried!!! I think this is what quilts should be full of!
The 16 block pattern is fascinating. I never would have thought to do that. Very nice. I also love the variegated thread, which I don't remember ever seeing. One thing I like to do with high contrast sometimes is have my top thread one color, and my bottom thread the other color. I like the pattern it makes.
Cathy, this is such a spectacular quilt! One of my biggest treasures in life are the times I spent with my mom in fabrics stores. I so enjoyed hearing the memories that you made with your daughter and learned so much from your video, always so inspiring! The quilt is absolutely stunning. Thank you so much.
Thank you, Christine!❤️ I'll be honest, I didn't expect to like it either and was surprised as well! 🤓😊 I think doing it the 16-block way was really the thing that made it work with the fabrics we chose!
What a surprise as I am making the same checkerboard pattern with my stash of Lori Holt Fabric. I am using printed fabric for my lights and darks. Thank you for sharing your thought process as I changed my choices as well.😉
That is a beautiful quilt! Enjoyed running into you and your girls at the pumpkin patch last year. Hard to believe it is that time again and you have already made a lot of new quilts and I have a lot of WIPs 😂😂
Thank you, Kimberly! ❤️ And oh my goodness, has it been a whole year already?!? I still remember how awkward I was when we met! 😂 I may have made a lot of quilts but good gracious, I have that many more WIPS too!!
I tried to comment during the live, but it was a no go…I think I got to the party a minute late. You almost had me in tears. Not only is your daughter going to love the quilt, but she is going to love the memories.
How fun. A treasure hunt for fabric - ideal!!! Love that you did it with your daughter. I only ask people what their favorite color(s) are and are there any colors they hate. Then I make the quilt based on that. Too much info becomes too much pressure for me. PS My husband heard your voice and came over to see the quilt. He said “oooh I like that!”
It's stunning, beautiful and fun all together! Such an awesome adventure with your daughter. Love the baking fabric - I recently used the same on a quilt I made for my niece and nephew's wedding gift. 🩵
The quilt is lovely, especially love the back fabric! Just so you know, I got teary eyed before you did when you started talking about the time spent together with your darling daughter. 💗
Shedding a few tears with you. Any and every time we spend with our kids is special and it is so hard to let them go. Big hugs to you from across the ocean. ❤
My niece has asked me to make a checkerboard quilt and has picked out a beautiful fabric line from AGF. I was struggling with how to organize the blocks…totally random seemed too scary. Love the idea of 4x4 blocks that “celebrate” each design. Thanks for your story.
Love this quilt! My son and daughter are 15 months apart and 1 year apart in school, so I understand. Two through college in just 5 years! What wonderful memories y’all made together!
Did you think about making the blocks smaller? Sometime smaller blocks can allow for a little more variation in color. Just a thought. It turned out great. What a great experience to get to do this with your daughter. ❤
I have 6 grandsons wanting quilts in their school colors, ASU, Kansas State, NAU, Purdue, California Poly and the last one will be Berkley. I am anxious to get started, I only work two days a week so I have lots of days to quilt, your daughter's quilt is beautiful, I made a Christmas 12 month quilt for my Son and Daughter, felt Like I would never get done. Great job!
Thank you, Adriana! I'm so glad you found me! ❤️ As for having tea with me, I have heard that so many times and I love it! I wish that I had space in my living room (or time!) to have everyone join me for a cup of tea or coffee and a chat about quilting and life! Thank you so much for watching and commenting and I look forward to having you along with me!
Oh Cathy, I’m crying right there with you (and laughing too). We can only hope that when we make quilts for those we love and cherish is that they will love and cherish it. I hope your Daughter loves this video as much as she loves the quilt. Such a beautiful story of love.
Cathy, I love that you were so moved! Beautiful quilt with Beautiful memories! Keep on being you! You Rock! 🖤🤍🩶
Oh Cathy this is such a special quilt…. I absolutely love it. And you’ve inspired me to use this design for my sweet grandson 💋👏♥️. Thank you👏👏👏
I held my breath until you said you bound the quilt in the backing material; perfect choice for a fabulous quilt!!!
Thank you, Sky Lynn! ❤️
What a sweet and lovely testament to the bonds between a mother and her daughters 🌹✂️🧵🪡
I enjoy all of your videos. This one in particular expressed what I think every quilter wants from their quilts. Connection. Thank you.
Not only are you an excellent quilter, thrifter, and colorist but your storytelling is right up there too ❤. I may have shed a tear or two along with 😅. Gives MacKenzie Childs vibes.
Oh I can totally see that! (MacKenzie Childs) 🤩
Oh Cathy you are too funny !! Love when you laugh at you're self!
You truly are an awesome quilter🐦⭐
Thank you, Neva! ❤️ I laugh at myself a LOT (especially in videos) so you must get a lot of laughs when you watch! 😂
The quilting is perfect! Love what the variegated thread added.
Such a special quilt.❤

Beautiful gift between Mother to her daughter. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
Thanks, Carmen! ❤️
Awe! I got all teary too 🥹, that was so sweet and a true collaboration. It turned out just beautifully. I’m sure your daughter will treasure it.💕
Thank you, Angie.🥰 I think a lot of us feel this way about the quilts we make for the people we love---there's a lot of love and emotion in every one!

Aww! Thank you so much! ❤️ (and LOL about your nail tech!)
That turned out so pretty. I haven't made one but I want to make a checkerboard quilt. Appreciate the information about the 16 patch blocks.
Oh Cathy...all the feels! I made a collaborative quilt with and for my daughter's college apartment and she still keeps it on her bed 6 years later. Such great memories of that summer together. ❤ Thank you!

Great quilt. Great way to describe your memories of it.
I did not expect to like a black and white quilt but I LOVE this! It’s so full of great fabric choices and the backing is beautiful too.
Thank you, Christine!❤️ I'll be honest, I didn't expect to like it either and was surprised as well! 🤓😊 I think doing it the 16-block way was really the thing that made it work with the fabrics we chose!
Beautiful quilt
What a surprise as I am making the same checkerboard pattern with my stash of Lori Holt Fabric. I am using printed fabric for my lights and darks. Thank you for sharing your thought process as I changed my choices as well.😉
Oh I bet your checkerboard quilt will be SO lovely---I love Lori Holt fabrics!❤️

Thank you, Lori! ❤️ And yes it IS a memory quilt, although I hadn't thought of that until now!😊
Beautiful. My daughter is also a sophomore in college, and she got her quilt last month. ❤️
Oh my goodness! Parallel paths. How wonderful! ❤️
I tried to comment during the live, but it was a no go…I think I got to the party a minute late. You almost had me in tears. Not only is your daughter going to love the quilt, but she is going to love the memories.
Well I hate that I missed you in the chat---but I'm glad you made it to the party at all! And thank you! ❤️
I love love love it! My fav quilt block too. What a cherished project to do together with your daughter. Much love.
Thank you, John.❤️ Much love right back to you!
I lovely story and a beautiful quilt. Let your tears sparkle on the blocks. ❤

Aww! Thank you, Michelle! ❤️ It's amazing how such a simple quilt can have so much appeal, isn't it?

Thank you so much, Holly! ❤️ Isn't that Speckled fabric just amazing?!
A joyful memory filled quilt. ❤❤❤
The quilt is lovely, especially love the back fabric! Just so you know, I got teary eyed before you did when you started talking about the time spent together with your darling daughter. 💗
Aww! Thank you, sweet Sarah! ❤️
Shedding a few tears with you. Any and every time we spend with our kids is special and it is so hard to let them go. Big hugs to you from across the ocean. ❤
Thank you, Lynnie! ❤️ And yes, it is so hard to let them go! Big hugs right back to you!
My niece has asked me to make a checkerboard quilt and has picked out a beautiful fabric line from AGF. I was struggling with how to organize the blocks…totally random seemed too scary. Love the idea of 4x4 blocks that “celebrate” each design. Thanks for your story.
Thank you, Ann! I hope your niece's checkerboard quilt turns out lovely--and I bet it will!❤️
Definitely a memory quilt! It's beautiful!!!
Thank you, Claudia! ❤️ I hadn't thought of it, but you're right--it IS a memory quilt!
Such an awesome, interesting, and precious story! ❤
So sweet! Thanks for sharing!❤
Love this and the memories I’m sure she will cherish always as well!❤
Lovely story, lovely quilt.
I love this! The 16 patch would make things quite a bit easier, “scrappy with purpose.” 😂
My granddaughter also wanted a black & white quilt, which turned out great.
Oh my gosh! Love it! & what wonderful memories y’all made in the making ❤
gorgeous quilt; great story
Love this quilt! My son and daughter are 15 months apart and 1 year apart in school, so I understand. Two through college in just 5 years! What wonderful memories y’all made together!
Just a beautiful quilt once again! Oddly enough I’ve been pondering a 16 patch quilt myself. :-)
Thank you, Jeff!❤️ Funny how often we seem to be drawn to the same type of quilts!
What an interesting journey! I love the back representing the Universe! Congratulations!
Thank you, Sylvie! ❤️
Love it. ❤ the universe, time, and memories - ❤. Thank you.
Thank you, Sonja!❤️
I am grateful to be able to share this story today. It is beautiful
Thank you, Cindy!
Great job!
Lovely...a quilt of the heart❤ thanks!
Hi Cathy, I just found your channel. So excited about your approach, I feel like I'm having tea with you.
Love it!! I had no desire to make a checkerboard quilt, until I saw yours.
Thank you, Carolyn! ❤️ Isn't that just the way it goes with quilts?!
Oh my! You have me crying! I totally get your feelings!❤❤❤
Aww! Thank you, Colleen! ❤️
