- So Ben asked me to help build him a new beast editing work station for editing RED 5k, 6k, 8k footage because his iMac just couldn't cut it anymore. Watch the build process and stick around to the end to see how well it handles RED 5k footage.

Apple is in decline, They have hit peak relevancy, The rest of the market has caught up and if it wasn't for Windows pioneering the modularity do it your own upgrade pathway that is inherit with PC then Windows would have crashed and burned along time ago, Not to be a purist but the spirit of Apple died with Steve, The facade from Steves legacy has worn off, And the business sharks come in like usual and take over direction from the company, The ecosystem of Apple is the best on this planet hands down but its also a wall that keeps you in this chain link upgrade pattern with is blatant planned obsolescence scheme. Apple hands down changed the game but that was because of their innovation and ease of use, they essentially introduced the world to this new revolutionary product and everyone was really excited and they ran off that wave for like a decade, and not only has everyone caught up, but some are doing it better.
That's the kind of friends you want to have around right there.

Nicccccce... I recommend he get the synology 1815 plus for his backup . I work off 2 ssd cards.. Once finished I throw it on the synolgy.. I shot a lot of 4k videos

This sounds like a videoguys build. I did a similar one a few years back. Works great
Now for the real test do the same with highly compressed 4k footage from any consumer/prosumer grade camera
You need Resolve and shitloads of GPU memory. 6Gb minimum. With Premiere u gonna have a bad time on almost all configs lol

yeah haha he wouldnt need it. I actually rebuilt my system with a new loop. I just havent had time to edit the videos. It looks way better than the last system. I only went with z270 Kabylake 7700k instead of x99 because I didnt have the money but honestly I see no loss in performance with the higher clocked quadcore over the slower clocked 6core.
It's 2021 now would you change anything with this build or leave it as is?
You would probably have a hard time finding these parts as they are obsolete. You can build a much better system than this for less money now. (If you can find a graphics card in stock)
Dude you don't need a 6k workstation for red material. The core of redcode is to NOT compress it too hard leading to less cpu power while editing. Just get fast storage and you can work on a macbook
I wonder how long it will take for nvidia to bring volta to the consumer market, by then intel should have the 12 core cpus and amd the 16 core cpus, that will be a huge thing for video editors :D
Why the Samsung 960 EVO over the Samsung 960 Pro? The Pro has faster read and write speeds.
Brendan Collins we used a 950Pro m.2 as the main drive. 960pro or evo wasn't out yet when we built this back in November.

OK Sir you make a good point about your PC being better but do you have ECC memory on your GTX 1080 the Mac Pro has dual fire pros with ECC memory ECC DDR4. it server grade electronic components for better work flow and it’s more stable PC is cheaper but Mac is better
wouldnt a hackintosh with fcpx be faster?
SupremeMaster hard to say. I don't use Fcpx and neither does Ben. So it makes more since to have the most power to run Premiere. Thanks for watching.

Great video! Question.. how and where did you setup all your workspaces.. ie render preview files, projects files, operating system and then windows paging file and adobe media cache files? What is on the SSDs versus the 10TB AND 8TB drive and is the RED footage previews getting played off thr SSDs? What codec is used for preview files?

I hear the Ryzen CPU have some issues with Nvidia GPU like driver issues. Is that right? so what your advice for 4K video editing in after effects with Nvidia 1080Ti. I planning to build 4K PC. And i'm confused between Intel i7 7700K and Ryzen 1700
Is it better to get 12 core 8 core? Or spend more on graphics card? I'm considering GTX 1060 6GB but the RTX 2080 8GB is a more expensive option. I edit mostly with Adobe Premiere and After Effects, sometimes with 8K footage.
With 8K I recommend you a higher core count processor, maybe 16-18 cores if you want an Intel o a 32 core Threadripper. R3D RAW loves high core count

Can this edit RED 8K video at full res in real time, without proxy?
Marian Palko it can play back simple 8k edits but not Not full res if you start grading. You have to set the quality to 1/2 or 1/4 if you want smooth play back
why not use ryzen？
Tech Nutrition I put text in the video saying why. I guess you never saw it. We built this back in Nov.2016. Ryzen never existed. I think we would have have deff done ryzen 1800x if we built it now
why not Ryzen or 960pro
Howard Kurtus they didn't exist when we built this. He probably would have got the ryzen 1800x and a gtx1080ti if we had built it now
tell your friend to pickup a E5-2696/2699 18 core from ebay you can get them for about 500-600$ f1 varients will run turbo allcores and net around 2850 cinebench

Hey man, great video, I'm planning to get a 2015 MBP for photo editing and some minor video stuffs, do you think it's still worth getting?
I'm Lee's friend from the video...I was a Mac guy for 13 years. Never thought I'd make the switch, but now I've seen the light. PC computers and laptops are simply more powerful for less money. I needed a new laptop so I spend $2700 on the new Razer Blade and it's more powerful than the most suped up new MBP ($4000). It pretty much looks and feels like a MBP and I bought a skin for the front so it doesn't show a logo.
Ben Knechtel thanks for the reply Lee, but my only problem is Windows 10, coming from windows 7, I find it rather clumsy and not user friendly at all....
Hmmm, the last time I was on Windows was Windows 98, haha. With this new PC build, it was 2 weeks of frustration transitioning from the superior OSX to Windows 10 but now I'm fluent in both. I primarily use Adobe Creative Cloud apps so once you are working in those programs, it doesn't matter what OS you use, it's practically the same.
interesting but I still think 4k footage is more than good enough.
BRANDONAMF obviously the final vid will be 4K or even less but shooting in higher res gives much more leeway to crop plus minimizes issues like moire
