Canonically, calamari inkantation supposedly has some extraordinary supernatural properties, most prominently freeing people from mind control, and I’m convinced that it genuinely does because this version of it makes me emotional almost every time.
Not exactly "freeing people from mind control." The octolings weren't under mind control despite it being a popular theory. The reason the calimari inkantation made the octolings want to leave was because it helped them realise there was a better life on the surface.. marina and agent 8 being examples of this. Callie was freed from mind control because she remembered her time with Marie because of the song..
So instead of freeing people from "mind control" it just opened the octarians eyes
It freed callie because it was the first song she and marie ever did as the squid sisters back when they were children, its moreso because of sentimental value that it freed her
Octavio never mind controlled the octolings, they grew up surrounded by anti inkling propaganda and almost nothing else, so hearing a song made of passion rather then a propaganda song for them to march too made the octoling realise how much more there was to life then just revenge

Ppl are tryna over explain toxic anoxic, all you really need to know is that it plays when you get attacked by a giant Godzilla like fish and the theme really invokes your impending doom, bc successfully killing that boss is rare

Calamari Inkantation may be in all 3 games, but this is the most interesting to me. The other 2 are really similar to each other and are plain compared to the diverse musical styles this one has
To give context: [SPOILERS]
The first 2 had only the Squid Sisters [Calie and Marie] since in both, they were fighting against DJ Octavio (lower stakes compared to S3's main campaign), while in Splatoon 3, not only the Squid Sisters made it, but DJ Octavio, and Deep cut collaborated on it! That's because they were literally fighting the CEO of Grizzco [a giant f-ing bear] in space, who was gonna nuke Earth with furry transformation ooze (I'm not even joking lmao)
While the Calamari Inkantation and its variations are nice, imo, I still freaking love Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion's Fly Octo Fly and Nasty Majesty, both made by Off the Hook!
I just love OE because I find the sanitized ooze to be creepier (it literally turns people into extremely clean and still intelligent zombies, LIKE ME!!! JOIN US!

Toxic Anoxic is a song that was in-universe played by Omega-3, a Salmonid band, which are the fish monsters you fight in the Salmon Run gamemode. Their animalistic, chaotic nature heavily influences their music style, with glitchy sound effects, strange instrument choices, and weird time signatures.
If you want to hear more of that style, I would recommend 'Frothy Waters' (which changes time signature on almost every bar) and 'Bait & Click' (which is an in-universe remix of 'Clickbait' that plays during Big Runs when Salmonids invade the Inkling city)

@ilexEmily if there is uncomfortable music, with uncomfortable time signatures, uncomfortable sounds and instruments, and excessive bass? It's most likely related to Salmon Run.
The version of Ska-Blam you listened to was actually the audio from the trailer - that’s why you were hearing the game’s sound effects. Also, some lore/context:
- the in-universe group that performs it is called “Yoko and the Gold Bazookas” which is just a perfect name for a brass-focused band
- Toxic Anoxic is the theme that plays during a fight against a King Salmonid (a sort of raid boss that appears every half a dozen or so games as a bonus round).
Finally, some background on Calimari Inkantation:
- Deep Cut (Shiver, Frye, and Big Man) are the main “idol group” for Splatoon 3 that hosts the news that announces updates, the multiplayer maps and game modes, and special events. They were also side antagonists for most of the Splatoon 3 campaign, but switch sides after you beat all three members in their boss fights. Your hear them in the more traditional-sounding instruments and vocals.
- The Squid Sisters (Callie and Marie) were the idols/news hosts for Splatoon 1, and played pretty significant roles in both Splatoon 1 and 2’s story modes. Any vocals you hear that aren’t Deep Cut are these two.
- DJ Octavio was the main antagonist of both Splatoon 1 and 2, and is suspected to be at the start of the Splatoon 3 campaign. However, you beat him as the tutorial boss, and then don’t see him again until he comes on to help in the final boss. He’s represented by all of the digital/computerized parts of the song.
- Calamari Inkantation was actually originally a folk song. Callie and Marie performed it to win a singing competition as children, and when they later formed the Squid Sisters, they remixed it into what’s referred to as the “heavenly melody,”the version of Calamari Inkantation you hear during the final phase of Splatoon 1’s final boss. It was then remixes again into Spicy Calamari Inkantation for Splatoon 2’s finale. Then, this version was reuses as a secret boss theme in the Octo Expansion, which follows the story of an Octoling freed from the pseudo-mind control over Octarian society trying to make their way to Inkopolis.

Toxic Anoxic is the theme that plays in Salmon Run whe you're up against a King Salmonid. King Salmonids are massive beasts that are so dangerous, you use the main collectable in Salmon Run (Golden Eggs) as ammo to deal any meaningful damage.
You definitely need to hear Toxic Anoxic in-game to make sense of it. The broken glitchiness is 100% intended to throw you off balance - and the best part is missing from the soundtrack itself, the roar/scream/screech of the King Salmonid you are fighting. It starts the song (during the mostly silent section of the song at the start) by absolutely TERRIFYING you, and the chaos of the rest of the song keeps you in that mental state.
Best horde PvE gamemode ever.
The beat in Calamari Inkantation 3mix is literally made with wasabi. That's why they're so spicy.
Seems that particular video for Ska-Blam was one with sound effects from when it was included in a trailer. Those technically are NOT part of the song, tho don't really seem to have been an issue in you enjoyment of the music itself anyways.
The sound effect kinda work well for the song tbh. Makes it seem like the band could’ve been recording it during a turf war or something.
Toxic Anoxic is one of my favorites not because its all that great of a sound but because it fits so well with the situation in which you're being attacked by a giant blood-thirsty monster
As much as I like the Splatunes of this video, I wish we had more Campaign Tracks.
I would say there are roughly 3 types of tracks in Splatoon with a lot of Subgenres:
- the PvP tracks are what you'd call bouncy, fastpaced, funtimes
- the Salmon Run tracks are what you'd call oddly terrefying but in a fun way
- the Campaign Tracks can be anything that the level wants them to be.
There are tracks in there people would call a "Superhero track" or a "Disstrack" and I think these deserve more time to shine.
We have seen that you adore stuff like "Into the Light", "Calamari Incantation(3Mix)" and there is so much more variety to be found in the Campaigns.
So when Splatoon 2 Part 2 comes out (because that seems like a logical thing to do), I hope tracks like "Crush", "Regret" but also tracks like "Shooting Starfish" make the cut :D

To be fair, there's a LOT of music in this game. She's always gonna have to skip some stuff, lol.
Toxic Anoxic is one of the many songs composed by Omega-3, a trio band of Salmonid. Their songs are know for their chaotic, disjointed, and all around strange composition. In terms of context, Toxic Anoxic is played when fighting against King Salmonid, the gargantuan leaders of the Salmonid military hierarchy. In fact, the distorted sound heard at the beginning of the track is glitched version of the sound that normally plays when you’ve cleared a Salmon Run game, as King Salmonid appear as a surprise bonus wave.
Despite the chaos, the omega-3 songs are so good

While I appreciate that, I am still a little confused how it wasn’t brought up in any of her First Three Splatoon Reactions,
I mean I thought for certain that it was supposed to be one of Splatoon’s most Iconic Themes, but I guess it might’ve not been as iconic as I made myself believe,
Although, then again, based on what I just heard, I guess I wasn’t the only one confused why it wasn’t brought up earlier, so I guess it’s iconic enough.
It's pretty much just in the fandoms bubble tbh.

Splatoon 3 is where I like all the idols equally. In the first one, I liked Marie more, and in Splat 2, I liked Marina more. Not that I hated the others, I just preferred one over the other. But I can’t choose over Frye, shiver and big man for who I like more. They all rock.
I prefer it when you talk through the music! Hearing your thoughts on them makes the video more enjoyable and insightful.
Also yes, I was bopping while I heard 3MIX in-game. It is amazing. You only hear it once and a bit times through, though, because the battle itself lasts for a maximum of 3 minutes and 33 seconds (not counting the intro to it, during which 3MIX starts playing).
You should listen to the new songs from the side order DLC! I recommend Unconscience, Spectrum Obligato - Ebb & Flow (Out of Order), and 47 Onward

Basically Toxic Anoxic and all those glitchy Chello songs are music from the Salmonid culture, specifically the band W-3/Omega-3. Its explained through some lore that salmonids dont have sheet music, and instead "play with the tide" leading to utterly chaotic war marches, which is what those songs essentially are.
Toxic anoxic is glitches in salmon run because king salmonids are mutant and the music is fitting that type mutation.
Salmons definitely aren't mutants, they're just weird-looking

YES! I was hoping you would come across calamari inkantation eventually. I will say though, some of these songs have dances/ performances that add extra flare to them! Especially with the squid sisters, deep cut, and off the hook

The tracks from the Salmon Run and the campaign modes (plus the dlc Octo Expansion), are REALLY out there-- as much as I love the pvp tracks, compared to the variety offered elsewhere in the soundtrack, they're a bit samey
The ones by the primary idol groups of each game (2 of which were contributors to 3MIX) also are more distinct than the standard pvp songs in my opinion, though less eclectic than Salmon Run or the standard Hero Mode ones. If you liked 3MIX, I'd recommend looking up more of the songs by Deep Cut, Off the Hook, and the Squid Sisters. They jam.
You should check out the live concert versions of some of these songs👀

Toxic Anoxic's context is... Err...
The real world context is that it's the boss music for the game's hoard mode, Salmon Run.
The lore context is... It's a track by ω-3, a Salmonid band (as opposed to an Inkling or Octoling band), and they have entirely different musical traditions. It is a military march (I think I've seen their music described as being 'experimental war marches'). ω-3 is noted for unusual time signiatures, and consists of a cello player (the oldest member of the band, in his 50s), a timpani player (in his 20s), and a DJ (unknown age, but the youngest).
I just love how random all of the Splatoon songs are, but that also made me love them
Toxic Anoxic is the theme for the king salmonid boss fight in the mode “salmon run”. The music in salmon run is usually very “glitchy”
toxic anoxic plays during a "special" level of the game. you do three standard levels and occasionally a special level with a giant screaming beast will come and the npc sending you out there is just kinda like "yeah good luck with that thing i dont know if youll beat it try not to die"
For some reason my brain always picks up English words in aquasonic. At 5:38 I hear “And I guess that I like you, and I want to stay with you”. And at 6:19 I hear: “I kinda missed you baby, and I’m staying with you. You’re better just the way you arrreee-e-areeee
Calamari Inkantation 3 mix starts playing when the final boss reaches his final kaiyu level size in space to mammallizing the earth. Your buddy salmon evolves also in a kaiyu size salmon to battle the final boss. (who is a grizzly bear) in space. meanwhile you are a squid standing on top of a space ship controlled by a octopus. to fight oncoming enemies with a ink gun. trying to popping the pimples on the final boss with a giant vacuum cleaner. (I would never come up with this story)
And the time limit is 3 minutes and 33 seconds. and that is the official play time of the Calamari Inkantation 3 mix before it loops (splatoon 3, remix 3 and so many more 3's are in this game)
i know itd be wild to do a pt 3 maybe someday... but oh my gosh i need to see you react to daybreaker anthem it's so beautiful yet catchy, and perfectly encapsulates the feeling of bittersweetness. its currently my favorite splatoon song :]

Great video as always! Also speaking of games ending in 3, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 deserves one last video. Am I just reposting my own comment? Yes. However, some opinions and feedback have changed. Kaleidoscopic Core still NEEDS to be heard along with Showdown with Z, New Battle!!!, and Redeem the Future (both parts). Where We Belong is simply beautiful, and tear-jerking, so that also needs a reaction. Cent-Omnia Region and Noah and N are also really solid pieces I think you will enjoy equally. Continue the great work!
ah, Omega-3. the splatoon band most infamous for “what is a time signature”. it’s funny that you brought up the comparison to Bear With Me, because the same band is strongly tied to that track too. they’re not credited as the actual artists, but it’s believed they’re still behind it.
I may be vibing as I listen to this (calamari inkantation 3mix) again, but once agaaaaiin this freaking theme is making me cry, as it did the first time I heard it, which was the day the game came out (I speed ran the story mode on a bet from my sibling) and now every time I hear it it brings me to tears. This game series has had such a huge impact on my life so I think that must be why it makes me cry when so few things are able to get me now.

I know this isnt splatoon 3 technically but You NEED to listen to Fly Octo Fly-Ebb and Flow, Its from Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion, Its play By the In Universe Two man Band Off the Hook. It Combines Multiple Sounds You experience Throughout your journey in the deep sea metro, It was stated in an Interview that it is supposed to be Off The Hook's Version Of Calamari Inkantation.

toxic anoxic is what plays when you fight king salmonids. they're very strong salmon, take up large amounts of the stage, and have insane amounts of HP. you have a limited time to kill them while also killing other boss salmonids. it is so freakin stressful

So for some song contexts:
Candy Coated Rocks - The song is performed by the ingame band damp socks which is made up of a bassist, a guitarist and a drummer. Off the Hook (the vocalists) joined them and they’re touring with them.
Toxic Anoxic - It’s performed by “Omega-3” a band consisting of 3 salmonids. The music is supposed to be chaotic and wierd because this only plays when the Salmonid boss appears which is just a huge “mutant?” Salmonid king which comes randomly at the end of the round or “shift”.
Calamari Inkantation 3Mix - The original song is a remix by DJ Octavio (formal Antagonist), Deep Cut (Shiver, Frye and Big Man), and the Squid Sisters (Callie and Marie, the original song performers). It sounds dramatic for a reason, which being the final FINAL boss in the game and the saga. The final battle is literally in SPACE, so it will be dramatic. The song is taken from an oldie song that Callie and Marie performed back in Calamari County when they were little.
Some funfacts:
- The Squid Sisters are actually cousins!
- Pearl and Marina (Off the Hook) is heavily implied that they’re lovers!
- The Deep Cut members all represent a poison like in budism (Shiver - Rooster: Greed | Frye - Snake: Hatred | Big Man - Pig: Delusion or Ignorance)
- Shiver’s name means a group of sharks, while Frye’s name means a group of eels!

I just found your channel starting from your Halo reaction to all your Persona 5 reactions and your reactions and commentary is spot on! Those two games have absolutely fantastic OST.
One of my absolute favorite Video Game OSTs are The Last of Us (especially the first game’s - it’s much more tranquil and less intense), and God of War’s OST by Bear McCreary.
But from a much more recent game that came out, I’d love to see your reaction to Herald of Darkness by Old Gods of Asgard (the in-game “fake” rock band) in Alan Wake 2… one of the most unexpectedly fantastic standouts from 2023.

something you gottta know about calamari inkantation is that it's a song that evolves and remixes it'self every game. giving 3mix EXTRA meaning aswell as having (somehow) lots of story significance. it's like a song that grows up alongside the story

Yeah, for whatever reason, the Ska-Blam rip you heard was from the trailer for the update! Uh... hopefully they updated it. But, I think this specific music piece needed it to give you a glimpse into how it sounds in-game. Sorta.
The hits and slaps in Toxic Anoxic allows the player to keep track of how much time they have left to defeat the giant boss that appears during the track. When you play the mode it's in "Salmon Run" enough times you can use all the chaotic tracks to keep track of the time you have left without ever looking at the timer lol
Toxic anoxic is part of the Salmonrun sidemode soundtrack in splatoon3. It's a zombie wave survival kind of game but with Salmonids instead because you know..Splatoon. They give this very eerie and chaotic vibe with their whole image and also their music. I looove how weird the music is. It's so unique and they have that same vibe for every theme for the mode. one of my favorites has a beat that gets added with everytime it restarts and they somehow make it sound good!

the version of toxic anoxic you're listening to is outdated from the very first splatoon 3 salmon run trailer. the updated one has much nicer and cleaner cello sounds. the ska-blam version you listened to is also from a trailer with sound effects, but it is the complete version instead of the looped!
I highly recommend you do a series of videos on the Elder Scrolls series. I just discovered your channel via the Halo video and I like your work. I would be curious to see a video on each and then either a summary in the last video, or a separate video maybe reviewing your favorite tracks from each or something. To specify, I would say do The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, and The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, all by Jeremy Soule.

The Toxic Anoxic music is like that because the band the plays it in the game us called w-3 and It is a group of salmons playing in a band. But since their literally salmon fish, they might not have that good of music taste.
Also, the place where they play is in The Middle of the ocean and it might not sound that good. That's why it's all static and sounds like it's switching radio stations.
If you do another one of these, I think it'd also be funny if you listened to the Horrorboros scream. It's not a song but you should hear it anyway it's great.

I just finished watching your halo listen and i truly think you would very much enjoy listening to the soundtrack to a small indie game called IXION. imo, this is one incredible soundtrack from a modern game. it completely sets the mood for the enitre game. It is peacful yet entrancing. I truly hope you'll atleast listen to a bit off camera maybe just to appreciate the artistry that went into it. thank you

If you were to do another one for Splatoon 3, could you do Bait & Click (Mutation). It’s not the most energetic, but it contrasts any other music in the game.
