    A British friend of mine said that there was a pub where it was known that you could often find Allan Williams, and that he was often happy to talk to strangers about the Beatles if they would buy him drinks. So when my friend was in Liverpool, he went there, and sure enough, found him, bought him drinks, and listened to his stories!

    A number of years ago I was at a Beatle Convention. In the room I was in there was a couple of hundred people. Alan was there and pretty drunk. The local TV station had the crew out and he yells out " We are at a F&^%ing Beatles night and not one person is singing or playing Beatles music " My friend pokes me and says get on the piano and do a few numbers. I first said no, then Alan said can you actually play? So I get on the piano and do a medley of songs and the cameras are on me. After I was done I was interviewed and Alan came up to me and literally was crying. He said and I quote " You were the best John Lennon singer I've ever heard" Quite a compliment. Yet then I turned to him and said " Alan I played all Paul songs " He laughed and put his arms around me and I bought him a drink. LOL.. True story

    I was fortunate enough to have dinner and a lot of drinks with Alan williams in his home on boxing day 1990. He was a hillarious and truely generous host. It's a day that resulted from a chance meeting in a beatles nostlalga bar on mathew st in liverpool. my friend and i had no idea who this odd guy was, inviting us to his home for dinnrer .it was a day that nearly didn't happen, And one I will never forget ! He's was a simpley awsome man !

    I knew Allan and his wife in the 70's and 80's, and found both of them really nice and charming people. He always called a spade a spade, like most Liverpudlians, and could be quite outspoken, but he had a wonderful sense of humour and had an extremely generous nature. By the way, he didn't wear a wig!

    I met him once in an Irish pub in Liverpool, Shenanigans.
    In April 2001.
    He was special.
    He told me about pedophile managers during the 60s, and satanism a bit, then he said he said too much to me.
    I wish he would have told me how the Beatles got into Aleister Crowley.
    I like the Jacaranda.

    Ringo was a better drummer, and a nice man. Pete was also a nice man, good for the group as a bandmate. Easy to get along with, not a bad bone in his body. Glad things eventually worked out for him with Anthology. Allan Williams book was good. Many anecdotes. Allan was there at the beginning. I agree with John, that they were a good performing act in Hamburg and Liverpool. Some of the stuff on the Star Club recording is very good, including some of their earliest writings.

    Williams is right on the money for most of this, he's not trying to please fans by glossing over things to make them sound better, he's being truthful.
    Sometime fans can get delusional and see no wrong in their hero's, Anyone who said Elvis took pills, and was prone to threatening and abusive behaviour is called a liar, fans often don't want to hear the truth

    According to Hunter Davies' great early biography of the Beatles, Paul, though a charmer, was not automatically the most popular Beatle. Pete attracted the most attention. Sutcliffe was seen by fans as a James Dean type. And the German art community who befriended the Beatles thought George "the beautiful boy" with the outsized ears.

    From all of the videos I've seen of Pete Best, I would say he is a very nice man. From all of his performances I've listened to, I would say he was not the right drummer for the Beatles. His style was the wrong fit. I watched a video here on TH-cam of Pete drumming for Gerry and the Pacemakers in some pub, and that settled it as far as I and other listeners are concerned. Unfortunately, I can no longer find the video. If you heard it you would know that Pete was supposed to be a Pacemaker, not a Beatle.

    HOWVER, Pete never "gelled" like the others did and like Ringo obviously did.
    Plus his drumming was 'limited' at best if you'll pardon the pun. He really wasn't good.
    I'm glad he got some money from the Anthology and I'm happy for him that he has gained some recognition as he genuinely seems like a lovely guy.

    Honestly, if Pete Best was a adequate drummer he would have been scooped up by a band with a recording contract in 60 years, wouldn't he? Just the publicity of having the former Beatles' drummer in the band would make the effort worthwhile and yet no one did it. There's more going on than he was just more of a heartthrob than Paul McCartney.

    • @ruelitocayamanda8162
      @ruelitocayamanda8162 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely. The Beatles were not after fame and fortune. Those are only byproducts of their success. They werd out to make great music. Pete didn't fit in. Didn't have anything to do with the number of girls he attracted. He didn't amount to anything as a drummer after the Beatles. He just wasn't that good.

      Interesting lift from Wiki '
      Jim was later present at a Beatles' concert in Manchester when fans surrounded drummer Pete Best,
      and ignored the rest of The Beatles. Jim criticised Best by saying,
      "Why did you have to attract all the attention? Why didn't you call the
      other lads back? I think that was very selfish of you".[74] Bill Harry
      recalled that Jim was probably "The Beatles' biggest fan", and was
      extremely proud of Paul's success. Shelagh Johnson-later to become
      director of The Beatles' Museum in Liverpool-said that Jim's outward
      show of pride embarrassed his son.[75

    Lets just put it into perspective. There are two kinds of statements-- statements of fact and statement of opinion. WHen Alan talks about his memory of actual events that he saw, he talks about a first hand fact-- he saw it with his own eyes. " I saw them, I hear them, etc"
    When he talks about stories relayed by other people, but still based on what actually happened in reality. That is a second hand fact. " I heard they, some said that.. etc"
    When he talks about what he thinks is the reason for things that he is not a first hand or second hand witness, he is sharing an opinion, not a fact. "Pete best was sacked because he was too pretty" is an opinion.

    • @magneto7930
      @magneto7930 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A lot of people believe that to be true. Allen has said that the girls would run right past the three of them just to get to Pete, and I've heard him say that in interviews that go back as far as the 70s. Yes, "opinion" is correct, but I think he was in a pretty good position to make that call.

    • @shoepermanbutthman2188
      @shoepermanbutthman2188 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@magneto7930 That is still just an opinion.. in fact it is the worst kind of opinion, the lowest and lamest type-- it is called speculation.
      The fact that girls run to hims does not prove that his looks and not his drumming or attitude that got him booted out.

    • @magneto7930
      @magneto7930 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@shoepermanbutthman2188 okay, first of all I said it was his opinion, not mine, lame or not. I can't even come close to being justified to make an accurate conclusion. Personally, I think there were a lot of factors involved. His overall character was quite different from theirs. It's no secret that his drumming wasn't great, but I honestly don't think that they were thinking about that at the time. I think they were thinking "okay we've got a drummer making some noise and keeping a beat." Later in years, John would refer to him as a lousy drummer. But back then they were probably thinking that it was better to have a drummer than not. Anyway, this is all my opinion and nothing more.

    Do you know anyone who may have photos from 1968 with Alan Williams in NYC during the management event for Apple announcement? I was in and out of NYC and the Beatles lives at many times. Any behind the scene or odd pictures from 1963-1970? I didn't collect pictures. I didn't go to their jam moments. These photos would be odd to find as the pharmacy picture on Paul McCartney and No Other Baby video. The guys were just friends during my spring breaks from school. I was around when Linda was with her daughter. John was a real sweetheart, George superb friend, Ringo greatest and Paul. I believe I last was in touch right before the breakup and Yoko came into the picture.

    Allan Williams wrote a book about his time as The Beatles Manager - he attempted to portray himself as a professional man of integrity, but consistently exposed himself as a tricky, selfish prick who snidely badmouthed his former clients - particularly Ringo whom he evidently disliked enough to repeatedly disparage as a bad drummer. Pete Best had advantages - he owned a drum kit & his mother ran a club - but he played the drums ineptly, did not improve & was replaced by Ringo who was (& is) one of the best & most creative rock drummers who ever played - plus he showed up, rarely made mistakes & was a team player with an engaging personality which actually made him the most popular Beatle with US audiences. When Williams writes about starting to sing in a club & drawing worshipful admiration & applause from the customers, you know this is ripe, self-serving fantasy from a practiced Bullshit Artist; yes, he was there at that time & place in Beatles History, but everything he said or wrote has to be filtered carefully.

      @@brez9091 - Could it possibly be that one of the reasons that girls were sleeping on Pete's lawn was that Mona ( Pete's mom ) let them ? If you read some of the remarks from Brian Epstein, Mona was always calling him about her son Pete and the Beatles, suggesting this or that. She was very much about promoting her son ( and that's quite understandable ). So just maybe she liked the attention for her son from these girls.
      On the other side of the coin ( so to speak ), maybe Paul's dad Jim, and MOST CERTAINLY John's aunt Mimi, wouldn't put up with these girls sloggin' about on their lawns, and told them not to hang out there
      ( possibly even to the point of calling up the Constables to get them off their lawns ). That could very well be one factor on why they hung out at Pete's place, and not at the others....Don't get me wrong here, I understand that many of the girls liked Pete, but many liked the others also. It just could very well be that the other "parents" didn't put up with their privacy being invaded ( i.e., "lawn sleeping" ).....
      As far as the " they rushed right past the others to get to Pete", that could have happened once or twice, but I don't think it was a "staple", and the only person I have heard this from is Allan Williams....'nuff said.

But, had he remained a Beatle, he might not be alive today, drugs etc, he is alive, only 3 Beatles left now, really. Goodluck to him.

    they were all very well educated with the exception of Ringo he got lucky they hired only drummers with PhD :p
    john and paul attended an art school for a few months and george harrison was 15
    real intellectuals thats why they became rock legends because of their enormous education compared for example to The Stones or The Shadows :p
    pete on the other hand had finished high school(WOOOW!) and later on worked as a civil servant plus his mother ran a rock club yeap he was a well educating lad with exceptional family background

      I don't think you understood properly what Allan was saying. In no way is it sarcastic or bitter. He's basically stating that The Beatles were better educated than the average musician in Liverpool at the time, which is actually true. They all went to excellent grammar schools where the standard of education was very high. What they all did after they finished school is another matter all together. Ringo,unfortunately due to severe illness during his childhood, missed out on a lot of school and eventually stopped going. Btw, Paul didn't go to Art School, that was John and Stu.

      paul and george went too but dropped out (its in pauls official biography) still i cant understand how a drummer may be effected by not having a formal education there are many well educated people who have studied music as well and are not successful at all and there are also many almost illeterate musicians who are studied now in universities like various jazzmen-if not bitter, i find his argument invalid and you cant really compare pete to ringo ringo has loads of recorded material and lives all these decades and has proven himself pete best was at beginners level at best when he was a ''beatle'' and since then, his music ''career'' is pretty much a joke ok you can argue what if he were a beatle when being a beatle mattered his life and music would have taken another path perhaps-or perhaps not either way, what ifs are the reason of insanity
      it is what it is and its really a shame belittling THAT much the most famous (and richest) drummer of all time

      δημήτρης αρναούτης οικονομάκης That's news to me. As far as I know Paul and George went to The Liverpool Institute (High School) BUT NOT to Liverpool College of Art. I think you should check that reference. Maybe you're confused with LIPA (Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts) which was co-founded by Paul in 1996 and is housed in his old school. As far as Ringo's education, not once does Allan say that it's a bad or negative thing, he merely states that Ringo didn't have a good school education, which is absolutely true. So he is not making any particular argument or deriding Ringo in any way. Perhaps you're getting confused when Allan says that Ringo wasn't their drummer when he was the Manager. Which again is TRUE.........Pete Best was The Beatles drummer at the time. So he is not criticizing or putting Ringo down in any way shape or form.

    • @user-zg5rg2rz9v
      @user-zg5rg2rz9v 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      err... he adds ''he was so lucky''...
      and lets say for the shake of argument
      that paul and george only attended high school
      is this considered great education even for that era in Great Britain? i m pretty sure they werent the best students in the class too Paul pretty much says the same thing that education is what ''made'' british rock mentioning other famous rockers of the 60s and early 70s, eric clapton comes to mind who attended even for a while an Art College. Seems those colleges were free in the late 50s so many working or middle class boys went in some college of art, and among that crowd several became international rock stars the biography also compares them to elvis presley, claimin than john lennon being a student even a bad one(paul's words) mattered and that he had a certain culture elvis presley who was a truck driver lacked i totally disagree i find it too ''petit bourgeois'' but even if lyrically or musically a decent education makes a difference in general, when it comes to drumming i still dont get why mentioning it i'm pretty sure there are thousands of awesome percussionists in Africa who cant write or read and have been millions for centuries...

    • @theselector4733
      @theselector4733 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      δημήτρης αρναούτης οικονομάκης Yes it's true, Ringo was the luckiest man in the world. He was invited to be their drummer just at the moment they were making it big. Pete Best did all the hardwork for the previous 2 years and then Ringo came at the end of that period when they had just signed a recording deal with Parlophone.......it was like winning the lottery for Ringo. One minute he's an unknown drummer in a small provincial city and the next he's the most famous drummer in the world.......I'd say that's lucky. Wouldn't you? In regards to their education The Beatles were very articulate, bright young men with a smart wit and a whimsical but down to earth manner. They had a good formal education through the schooling system and a cultural and street education through the culture and streets of Liverpool and England at the time. Allan is not saying that they were any better or had a higher status than other musicians. He's simply saying that what made them different to other Liverpool musos was their personalities and that they had a better education than the average Liverpool musician at the time.

    My reading of Pete's sacking is that George Martin was a bit dissatisfied with Pete's drumming and mentioned it to Epstein, so Epstein panicked in case they lost the recording contract and suggested to the other 3 that it might be best to let Pete go, and they agreed.

      Pete was drummed out because they resented his popularity. When George Martin expressed doubts about Pete recording potential, the others used it as an excuse to drop him. They obviously knew it wasn't warranted or fair; that's why they ordered Brian to fire him. One thing that Ringo fans forget is George Martin did exactly the same thing with Ringo, telling the others he wasn't good enough to record their first single. He was replaced by Andy White.

    George Harrison once said " he who tells all he knows , tells more than he knows ". Allan Williams is a prime example of this. He dined out
    On his involvement with the Beatles ever since they made it big. For him to consider Pete was fired because of his looks is misguided.

      Agree with you. What he says about Stuart being elbowed out by Paul is more than Allan Williams knows. According to Paul in an interview some years back with a bass magazine, no one wanted to be the bass player, because they all wanted to be out front; and the bass player was always "the fat guy at the back". According to Pete Best - here and in a book he collaborated on - Stuart was fairly competent, though not as good as Paul.

    • @meatwad1
      @meatwad1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suppose George Martin was also lying when he said he didn't think Pete Best was good enough to play on their recordings. Despite all the recordings of Pete Best's mediocre playing that are here on TH-cam for anyone to listen to, despite all the drummers who leave comments saying Pete Best was a lousy drummer, and despite The Beatles themselves saying Pete Best wasn't very good, these stupid fans and hangers on like Allan Williams keep peddling this urban legend that Pete Best was fired because Paul was envious of him. The thing I always wonder is, if The Beatles envied Pete Best and worried about him getting too much attention from the girls, why did they hire him in the first place? Was he an ugly guy who became handsome overnight and they suddenly found this unbearable? Or did they fail to notice that he was a strikingly handsome guy for two years and then suddenly notice it and get upset about it right before they fired him? Allan Williams' commentary seems self-serving. It looks to me like he was trying to make himself seem more intelligent than he actually was with his "that was the instant I realize they would boot him" story.
      I've also seen a clip here on TH-cam where people who knew The Beatles said they fired Pete Best because his mother, Mona Best, was a pushy and overbearing woman who was always bothering Brian Epstein. He got tired of having her fingers in his ass so, between this and The Beatles not really liking him or his drumming, they got rid of Pete and hired a far better drummer and someone they liked as an individual.

    McCartney always seemed a bit mean with money; for example he went ballistic when a session musician wanted to flog one of his old guitars. More recently he tried to get Lennons name removed from some song labels, claiming that he (Mac) wrote them himself. I wish his ex Heather Mills would write a book dishing all the dirt about their marriage..;)
    Harrison seemed sensible at first but later went nuts and got into that Harry Krishna shit, and when he died his ashes were slung in the "sacred" river Ganges, he's a real nowhere man now.
