How to Type Without Looking at the Keyboard

- This tutorial is going to show you how to improve your typing skills.
Touch typing is a very useful skill as it will dramatically increase the rate at which you can enter information into the computer. This tutorial is going to show you how to type without looking at the keyboard.
Step # 1 -- Just Don't Look
It might be obvious, but the first step you need to take in learning to type without looking at the keyboard, is not to look at the keyboard! It's very tempting to look as you think it makes your typing faster, but keep your eyes on the screen, after a while your typing will be much faster.
Step # 2 -- Finger Position
To make sure that you hit the right keys every time it is essential that you learn the right finger positions. This picture shows you where each finger should be, pause the video if you need to now so you can get familiar with these positions. There are even little bumps on the "F" and "J" keys so that you know where to place your index fingers without looking.
Step # 3 -- Practicing your Typing
Now that you are not looking at the keyboard and know where your fingers go, the best way to learn is simply to practice. A great website for this is www.keybr.com , here you will find a free typing practice system which allows you to enter words and have your speed and accuracy measured. Once the site has loaded click on the bubble and you will be prompted to begin typing, do this. Use this site regularly to practice your typing and you will find that soon you know how to type without looking at the keyboard.

This is one of the true human gifts. The brain will understand where the keys are if you do it enough. I suppose if you don't type much you could be a little off beat, but in general a keyboard is a natural leaning system. I am writing this post with not looking at my keyboard at all. Most of us can do this. If not, start writing more!

Well this is my first message applying this method and it's taking me ages to type this sentence, but I'm confident I will improve dramatically if I keep practicing. This literally took me more than 15 minutes. Even my screen went off. I'm actually typing this last sentence a little bit faster than before. I will definetely keep practicing to improve my typing skills and get ride of old typing habits. (I'm literally sweating).

wow, i read this in a very slow and painful pace
it's never to late. I didn't know how to type properly, let alone how to type without looking at the keyboard until highschool. I'm not the fastest and if I try to go as fast as I can, I'm prone to making mistakes. Still, it's SO much better than just using your pointer fingers and having to stare at the keyboard and then keep looking at the screen to make sure that you didn't make a mistake.
In middle school the computer class did an amazing job! Within 3 weeks, I could type super fast without looking at the keyboard. Only problem, is no, I use three fingers to type, and I look at the keyboard! I memorized the positions of the keys, but it's just something that I need to see certain key positions in order to know where the others are. I am hoping to bring back the skills that class taught us. So, Thanks for the site dude!

I just found out that I actually can't type when looking at my keyboard😂 For many years ever since I was a child, I somehow learned myself to type without looking at my keyboard. And when I do that now it feels really weird and unnatural, often causing spelling mistakes 😂

I've been able totype without looking at the keyboard or the screen for years now. Sometimes I type much faster without looking at the screen at all, and I can partially focus on conversations at teh same time, though it often feels like a bit of a flex. When it really matters, I'll still have to have a lookover at the text I've typed so there'll be as few typos as possible. But since this is just a youtube comment section, I'll just type this paragraph out while looking at the painting on the other wall.
I learned Dvorak in about a day or two, and I haven't regretted learning the new layout. It's really easy to learn this one; much easier than Qwerty. I'm at a little over 60 WPM after about a month.
