  • In this video I set up Ian's brand-new Taylor 214ce. In his own words: "When I got it home the action was very high so took it back they said it was due to humidity and kept it for a few weeks. I got a lesson on how humidity affects guitars which was good, anyway i got it back and its ok, within Taylor spec, but I'm sure it could be better"
So very high from the shop; blamed on 'humidity'; customer made to wait a 'few weeks' for it to be (presumably) de-humidified whereupon he gets it back and wants to believe that the action is improved (you can hear the shop people saying "Well, it's within Taylor's spec..."). But it isn't - so he sends it to me.
The dopey thing is that Taylor guitars are made to have the action set using their bolt-on neck and paired shim system - from the outset. They SHOULD be set the way a customer wants - FROM THE OUTSET! What's the point of having such a good neck adjustment system... and then selling guitars that thousands of customers think have too high actions? Sigh.
So I fitted a new pair of shims - with a heel shim number increase of +10 which translates into a 0.9mm action reduction as measured at the last fret. Having done a lot of these set ups recently, I'm starting to get a good idea of the shims I need to reach the target actions my customer wants.

Taylor says it introduced its bolt on + shims neck system in 1999 so the answer is ‘yes’
