    A perfect moment. When Columbo gets dead serious. His truthfulness is astounding. Falk was really one of the greatest actors ever to share his gift with the world.

      Possibly because he gets results? His superiors know that his brand of investigation works against people who might otherwise use influence or money to escape their punishment.
      Alternatively, maybe we only get to see the crimes that are interesting puzzles. If he gets to the scene of the crime and there's a woman holding a bloody poker, crying about how 'he shouldn't have said those things about our Harold', there's only so much you can do, even with donut breaks, to stretch the investigation beyond the first commercial break. (Yes, that's cribbed from Terry Pratchett, because I only plagiarise from the best).

    Tyne Daly - A credit to her art. Notice, when her character believes she is still 'innocent' in the eyes of Columbo - Her whole face shines. And then, when he tightens the noose .. she now smiles with her mouth only. An actor's actor.

      The VCR didn't pan and zoom, it was the police lab technicians who edited the vidoe tape for Columbo who were responsible for that. All Columbo did was turn the remote's pause button on and off.

    Columbo always knows who the murderer is as soon as he sets eyes on them. He spends the whole episode getting evidence to convince others who the murderer is.

    • @ShnNar1000x
      @ShnNar1000x 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      In the real world, cops often convince themselves they know who the murderer is and then set about trying to prove it rather than letting the evidence lead them to the conclusion. This often leads to wrongful convictions. Here in Canada, we have had several cases like this (that we know of). In Colombo's case, he usually had a reason for homing in on someone, though what that reason was was usually not revealed. In one case, I remember the murderer asking Colombo how he knew and Colombo actually gave a very credible answer, based on observation. It wasn't just a gut feeling for him.

      In the Columba murder cases we see dramatize on the TV, Colombo generally seems to deduce who the murderer most liekly is by some sort mistake the killer makes early on in the case, either in the interaction with Columba or some other post-murder action by the killer. While he generally feels fairly certain he knows who the killer is he also knows what led him to this conclusion doesn’t prove it in and of itself thus he goes about the rest of the investigation filling in additional pieces of evidence so that he has very solid case when he goes to arrest the suspect. Now of course, we only see the case he solves but given the time span the TV show ran, we can safely assume he had lots of cases not shown for the audience and that maybe he didin’t pick out the murderer correctly the first time in every case and maybe he had a few unsolved case where he had no suspect.

      @@Charlesb88 I was thinking that too. But in one of the last season 10 episodes, he says he's been going after murderers for 25 years and that he finally lost one. Then the helicopter arrives and the ashes he was supposed to scatter had shrapnel from a different body, thus giving evidence to get the guy at the crematorium. Of course he might be referring to murders committed by the rich and influential. There's plenty of low-class murders that don't get solved, perhaps because they don't talk to the police. Maybe he doesn't do as well in the Black community?

      I know this is a year old comment and I'm not having a dig at OP. But it's really, really important to understand that this is what crime shows do to us - we have that mentality when someone lawyers up they must be guilty/hiding something. Please remember in real life that the police are NOT your friends, the police are doing a job and they don't care about you. You're not doing yourself a favor by cooperating with the police without an attorney even if you're 100% innocent, because THEY don't know that. They're still going to use every trick in the book on you and you can implicate yourself without even realizing it.
      If you find yourself involved in any police case ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS lawyer up before you even say a single word to them. That doesn't make you guilty, that makes you smart.

      His flinching would not stand up, but it is a loose thread that Columbo can pull to see what else rattles loose. It is the first clue, that leads to a second, that leads to a third, aso, until one person's story is revealed to be a collection of lies and all the evidence is pointing at them

    I'm a fan of the show, but come on, they could have filmed the 'flinching' better. Since the flash travels faster than the sound of the explosion .. the time of the flinch is perfectly reasonable ... especially since humans are excellent at detecting changes in the peripheral (goes back to when we had to watch out for animals in the bush , waiting to kill us)

      His whole body is tensed up for the blast; the thing with the eyes was to draw out the suspect.
      His neck, shoulders, arms and balled-up fists give it away more than his eyes.
      She would want to agree with Frank's insights, to be 'on his side'; so she 'saw it too', even though it wasn't there!
      He would never share vital evidence with a suspect, unless it was a draw-play.
