  • Hi Everyone! Sorry it takes so long to upload new content, this video only required 87 hours of work! 😂
    I hope you like the video about the city planning and urbanism in Barcelona. I focused on the beginnings of the city, as Barcino, the Cerdá extension of the city - Ensanche / Eixample - and the last changes related to the 1992 Summer Olympics!

    The tower on Montjuïc is by Santiago Calatrava, not Norman Foster

      You are totally correct! I was thinking about the Communication tower, and instead mentioned Foster - who did the Collserola. Thanks for mentioning it 👍

    I love this format, especially how it combines history with the evolution of urban form. The wide chamfered corners of the superblocks was one of the first things that struck me when I first visited Barca. I never knew that the corners were intended to allow for trams to turn.

    La muralla que se derribó en el siglo 19 no fue la romana, fue la medieval, hay una gran parte de la muralla romana con muchas torres que se pueden ver actualmente.

    It was a solid video. What was missing is a proper ending, an overview of things being executed right now that'll shape next two decades:
    - superblocks, with focus on children, elderly, walkability, removal of cars from the city,
    - development of the Sagrera train station to connect to Europe via high speed rail, including boring a challenging tunnel close to Sagrada Familia,
    - Poblenou and 22@ District - industrial area being redesigned as modern tech hub with Spanish $1bn unicorn startups setting up their headquarters in.

    Lived for a year in this beautiful city! Such beautiful architecture and the urban planning is genius. I believe the blocks you mentioned are called superillas correct?

    • @GregVidua
      @GregVidua 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Superilles or superblocks is an extension of the original idea which groups 9 adjacent blocks into one area which is supposed to not allow through traffic by car and have all services required for quality of life (health care, education, green spaces, areas for children to play in, stores, pharmacies, gyms). City of Barcelona plans to execute 21 such areas by 2030, with 3 temporary experiments already in place, and 4 first final designs being built in next 2-3 years.

    It’s unfortunate that when Eixample was planned, they didn’t include something like a Central Park or just more different parks. I like Barcelona, but I think there simply isn’t enough parks…

      Well having videos like these are great “escapes” from being lockdown. Also I heard this story recently: Johnny Walker kept advertising through WW2 and people were wondering why, no one could afford the time or money to buy whiskies. But you know the only brand that people remembered after the war?
