For those with the opinion that 'This is a video game, not for me.', I was one of you...UNTIL I played it at Pax West (Prime) 2 days ago. The app does nothing but add to the board game, and does not remove the feeling of playing a board game; no-more then passing around a rule book would. It made it a heck of a lot more enjoyable, especially since you can now play cooperatively with your friends, instead of one of you being stuck with the 2 hour setup, then having a totally adversarial relationship while trying to have fun. If you divide the map pieces and cards among the players, and have them search/place game pieces while the person currently holding the app reads the narrative, then the game proceeds extremely well; to the point of being smooth in transition to game plot and the mood (read immersion) is never lost. Also, with those of us with any of the 1st ed. games or expansions, they included the conversion kit RIGHT IN THE BOX, so no need to buy something separate to start enjoying your prior stuff. I highly recommend you try the game, at the very least, before rendering an opinion on how it would/should play. Take it for what it's worth, but I think you're missing out on a huge upgrade to the game, not the 'downfall of fantasy fllight games'.
sir im from philippines and Thank you so much for making this video. English is not our first language so it gives us a hard time understanding the rulebook. However by watching this video of yours it makes us understand the rules and the mechanics of the game so much easier. Today is 2022 , this video was uploaded 2016 and it still helps Newbies like me to understand and play the game easier. We bought this game 2 weeks ago and finally we can really enjoy to play this game later after we finish watching your videos. Thank you so much !
Fully read some of those attack encounters, on more than one occasion it said to check strength, needing 2 results, and if you pass you deal the weapons damage PLUS the test results! You shorted yourself on some damage a few times.
You are the best !! I've just bought my game late last night, sure to be the first one in Montreal to have one. Getting ready to play today and here you hare, you already made 2 video about it thank you :)
Around 19:15...why wasn't Father Mateo able to check the bookshelf after the evade but Agatha was? How come Agatha didn't have to evade the hunter but instead passed right through to the section of the room with the bookshelf?
Great vid as usual. Only little thing i noticed is the first horror check. If multiple investigators would resolve a horror check against the same monster, those investigators all resolve the same horror check. (p. 10). I think Agatha would not have had to use a different check.
+Drive Thru Review That is dumb. I understand trying to keep the learn to play easier, but not by teaching the rules "wrong" in a way. Oh well, keep up the awesome work.
At 28:14 you flip a damage card face up and then facedown. later could you choose it again? or should damage cards be randomly chosen for these purposes?
It should be random. I think it was for a different character the second time if I recall... or it was a physical the first time and mental the second... Just a coincidence. (iirc)
Great. Looking forward to some closing thoughts on this. Compared to Descent Road to Legend, this seems like it has a lot more interaction directly in the app, and that worries me a little (monster damage is tracked in app, and a lot of text and clickable items). Am I wrong in this? Or is the "app vs board" balance the same as in Road to Legend?
Given that the 1st edition is selectable in the app, does it mean that it is possible to use the app just with it? (without purchasing the 2nd ed.)? No upgrade kit?
Noticed that when you attack it's often "weapon damage plus your test result". So, for example, if you used the crowbar and it demanded 2 successes, wouldn't you cause 2+2 damage?
Is there any need to actually set the physical board up or can it just viewed using the app without the board? kinda seems like its pointless setting the board up....
Definitely. You've got the cards and monster locations and managing the position of your investigators and the board itself provides visual clues to the mysteries etc...
Nice Runthrough but as for the game, I dont think this is for me. I feel it's more a video game and If I wanted to play computer games I would look elsewhere. I personally want a break from computers games this is why I play boardgames. I do however feel it's a good game but on a selfish note,i hope this is not the future for boardgames😉😎☺

Glad it was still helpful even now. Thank you!
Thanks for being so quick out of the starting blocks, Joel. Bought yesterday and keen to get to grips today. This will be invaluable.
Fully read some of those attack encounters, on more than one occasion it said to check strength, needing 2 results, and if you pass you deal the weapons damage PLUS the test results! You shorted yourself on some damage a few times.
I don't doubt it. :)
Thanks for coming back so quickly. I thought it would be but wanted to ask. I think you do a great job.
Again thanks.
Thanks Dennis.
You are the best !!

Great job Joel! This really gives you a feel for how the analog and digital experience are intertwined!
Thanks Dan.
Everyone is different, really like that.
Around 19:15...why wasn't Father Mateo able to check the bookshelf after the evade but Agatha was? How come Agatha didn't have to evade the hunter but instead passed right through to the section of the room with the bookshelf?
Hard to say without going back and watching it. Most probably is I made a mistake :)
Great vid as usual. Only little thing i noticed is the first horror check. If multiple investigators would resolve a horror check against the same monster, those investigators all resolve the same horror check. (p. 10). I think Agatha would not have had to use a different check.
Also, All Damage and Horror are claimed faceup unless the effect causing the Damage or Horror specifies otherwise. (p. 7)
Just double checked. You do a different check per investigator.
Oh You were referring to the reference. The Learn to Play is worded differently. Lame.
Yep. That's dumb they don't include these statements in the Learn to Play.
+Drive Thru Review That is dumb. I understand trying to keep the learn to play easier, but not by teaching the rules "wrong" in a way. Oh well, keep up the awesome work.
Great playthrough ! at 25:00 uld not agatha have killed the monster ? 4 damages instead of 2 ? :)
Great video! However, I think you were forgetting to use Agetha's ability: After she resolves a horror check, she should gain a clue.
Yep. Keep watching. I catch this later :)

Thanks for this! Should help with the rulebook some. Sadly I have to sleep before part 2 will be up apparently :)
Ya. One of the video files corrupted and I had to reimport and then got caught watching the Olympic ceremonies. Soon :0

It's heavier "app" in Mansions. There's more narrative that comes out of it, and yes. You track damage and special items in it as well.
Thanks! Looking forward to your final review :-)

No you still need the base set.
Aren't damage and horror cards resolved immediately unless it says otherwise, BEFORE turning face down. I'm not too sure.
Kevin Barton That's correct. Video is annotated. Definitely screwed that up :)
What's with those awesome dice rolls? Luckbox.
Do we agree there are only 3/8 faces with success ?
Did you glue the monster minis to their bases?
No. You wouldn't want to with the new stuff coming. I doubt they will give you more bases.
Noticed that when you attack it's often "weapon damage plus your test result". So, for example, if you used the crowbar and it demanded 2 successes, wouldn't you cause 2+2 damage?
Yes I missed this a couple of times.
+Drive Thru Review cool. Thanks for the video. Really convinced me to get this game.
Sorry, if I missed the info, but:
Is the app mandatory to be able to play?
Dmitry Apatin you cannot play without the app
I see, thanks!
Dmitry Apatin your welcome, ive just recieved my copy so lets see how it goes lol

ack! I have to buy the 'same' game again! I'm so excited too! that's a first!
Horror checks: do you really 'draw' 1 for each investigator? Wouldn't 1 do for all?
It's one per investigator. Just double checked :)
It's actually only 1 check if multiple investigators do the same horror check against the same monster, see Rules Reference page 10 "Horror Step"
Is there any audio in the app?
There is. I had it turned down.
