Yep just finished my first game and monsters showed up and I literally had no way to prevent them from killing one of my characters. Her worst ability was speed and if she tried to evade it used speed if she tried to attack it used speed and if she tried to attack it used speed. That just felt like bs honestly. No skill there just luck. The monster literally spawned on her with no warning and no way to prepare
Haha. I can see how that happens. Just played my first game last night. I got crazy lucky with all my combat rolls and beat the hell out of every cultist and monster with a 2x4. Good game!!

Played Mansion of Madness yesterday and just wanted to say thank you for this video. Yeah, it's like the very first video he ever did. Harvey was an amazing hero in that game, and had probably one of the best narrative stories out of any character in a board game they've run since I started watching the channel.

Played this with my friend and my brother yesterday and man, i wish i would have watched this video before we did. While we played mostly correct, i noticed quiet a few things we messed up or didnt do 100% right. Awesome video

I also love the way FFG did the Learn to play, and rules reference books in the 2nd edition of this game.

This is an excellent and well informed video. it is much better going through this than their book as the way it is written, some rules are a bit ambiguous. I can't wait to play this game as I got it for my birthday last week! :):) I need to paint the figures though!! haha

I am very glad to see both the actual release of the second edition, and you're How To Play video. Ever since stumbling upon your play through of the first edition last years, I've been excited to try the game for myself. However the complexity of the original, along with the Keeper player requirement, always kept my group from taking the plunge. The new edition is a wonderful direction for players like myself, and I hope that these changes won't prevent you from gaining as much enjoyment from this new edition as you did from the first.

first time u reviewed mansions , I bought it, and now because of Ai and for of war effect, and possibility to implement older games , game becomes much easier to prepare and finally additional player is not required to be master and also u can go solo,

Really interested in getting this, the video also really helps in letting me know about the content! Would you say this has high replay value? Or are the expansions necessary for more fresh experiences?
I tend to avoid weighing in on replay value, because that is so dependent on the player. What one person might find replayable, another might not. For what it's worth, I've played the scenarios in the core box multiple times. But again, that doesn't mean you'd do that and enjoy it.

This has become a favourite of the group, we stream the app to a tv via laptop and it works great. Really creates a fun RPG like experience!

Great how to play Rodney. Wanted to ask about your opinion on using the tablet in the game. I'm sure purists will not like adding electronic devices to boardgames, but it would be great to hear your opinion. Do you think that the app makes the game better/easier/more enjoyable/different?
I avoid offering opinions on these sorts of things generally, as it's going to be entirely up to the individual gamer and their tastes. Some will like it, some won't. There's no question in my mind though - this version is the one I'll play from now on.
So here is a question my wife, friends and I can't answer. When the mythos event says "affects the player with the most will" but we have the same amount, who does it apply to? Is this one of the cases where we can decide who or is it to us both? Bought this game because of you a we are loving it. Keep up the awesome work! You're my go to guy for board games.
The first MoM always interested me, but if I was going to have a "DM" game it was going to be an RPG so I never broke into it. I am torn on the App though if it will be fun to play with so I think I will wait till we get the playthrough before breaking down on this one.
Question! When it comes to horror checks, what do you mean by "in range"? Also, it says things like affecting playing with highest damage, but what if nobody has any damage?
Hey Blargle, you'll find range defined here: th-cam.com/video/a2dsq2GsMSs/w-d-xo.htmlm17s - range is a generic term in this game that doesn't just apply to attacking. It means anything within 3 spaces (but not through doors/walls). In a case where no one has any damage, then the players are "tied" for highest damage (0 each) and you would resolve ties as described (players choose).
Getting this game second hand (without any organization from the previous owners) was really difficult. But I think I've got a good handle on the game. Me and my family will be able to play tommorow for our little board game hang out

Hi Rodney! Very helpful video and we have some questions! When you’re trying to solve a puzzle, do you roll dice to determine your amount of attempts? Or do you do the amount of the skill required? Also, we had some events happen that required the character with the lowest lore, strength, etc. and we were both tied. How do you break a tie? Thanks!
Hey Nicole, you'll be pleased to hear that for most of our tutorials, we have a handy index in the description with quick links to the various sections of the rules that you might be curious about. You'll find a link for your question about Interacting with puzzles there. The video also addresses ties, but we don't have a link to that, but I remember the answer, so you're in luck :) In the case of ties, the players decide. So if it was for lowest Lore and there was a tie, you would just pick which of the tied players would be affected.
Hi Rodney, I have a few questions about the rules and I hope you know the answers. -May I cast a spell that doesn't include the word "action" whenever I want or am I limmited to a phase (incestigator's or mythos phase)? -When the "feed the mind spell" says that investigators within range are focused does this mean that they can change the clue tokens to success only in investigator's phase or to the mythos phase too? Does this spell counts in darkness or not? -When an investigator and a monster are in a room with a darkness token could the investigator attack the monster with a ranged weapon? Is there any difference if the investigator was outsice the room with the monster and the darkness token? -About the horror check, when an investigator is in range but there is no LOS with the monster - let's say the monster is in a room and the investigator is in a hallway 1 space away from the door- does the investigator has to make a horror check or not?

If it doesn't say Action, it will typically give an indication of when it can be used. 2) The effect applies anytime you would roll dice. 3) Darkness does not affect attacking a monster in your room. If you are outside the room, you can't attack with a ranged weapon, as you can't attack through doors. 4) No.
For start I can't thank you enough for your immediate respone. Now as an example of a spell not having the word "action" I could say the "feed the mind" spell. It doesn't mention when you are supposed to cast it so could it be when another invastigator is performing his actions? Could it be right at the start of mythos phase in order to impove the test to come or before the horror checks? As far as the darkness conserned, when a monster is inside a room with darkness and the investigator in front of room's door but in another room and 2 spaces away from the monster (straight or diagonally) could he fire his firearm if he has no light source with him?
The Feed The Mind spell effect starts with the word "Action". That means you can only do it on your turn, as an action. In your darkness example, the darkness doesn't factor in, because if they are in different rooms, they are not in range of each other. You can't shoot through doors (even ones you've already explored though. Just pretend that the characters always close the door when they enter and exit a room, if that helps). That said, darkness doesn't impact weapons.
I found some instructions about darkness not being able to move 2 steps or do any puzzle or in order to do a puzzle or search action you need to spend 1 movement then do the action. But in edition 2 doesn't refer to anything of the mentioned above, so my questions are: 1. Can you move and resolve a puzzle when moving in a dark area? 2. Can you do 2 steps when moving in a dark area?

The one, or technically two, question(s) I have for this game as I found this game on Steam via MacBook Pro: 1. Do you need the physical items in order to play or can I be able to play it on my laptop without them? 2. The Steam had it available to play as 'single-player' yet the way the game is set up, it seems like it would need more than one player to play, is that correct? Please let me know soon as I was looking forward to trying this game on my laptop.
Hey there, this is a board game, that uses an app to manage certain aspect of the game play, but you can't play the game, without the physical components. You can play single player for sure.
I must have played the 1st edition because although i loved the game there was a lot going on and i was nervous about bringing it into rotation with the responsibility of knowing what to do on my shoulders haha but the tablet componant seems to simplify it
So you can use the tiles and items card of the first edition? And if you own the first edition, do you need to buy the next up coming expansions for the stories or will they just update the app for more stories? Sorry for noob question, just order the game because of your video:)
Not the items, but the tiles, monsters and investigators can be brought over - there is a conversion kit for them included in this edition. You won't need the new expansions if you already have the old ones.
I loved watching your play-through of the original (the spooky atmosphere and the hoods too hohoho). Is this second edition the way to go if given the choice between the two versions?

hi Rodney, I have a question about moving through fire. Can I interrupt my movement to extinguish a fire? I am moving two spaces but the first space has a fire I have to pass through. OR do I keep moving and suffer a facedown damage? What if I decide to move only ONE space into the fire. Do I FIRST suffer a facedown damage and then use my second action to extinguish it? Lastly if the app instructs to move a monster within range of an investigator but there are NO investigators in range, do you still move the monster or leave it where it is and select No Investigators in range from the app? Thanks!!!
Here are the key rules with fire you need to keep in mind: Whenever an investigator moves into a space containing Fire, he suffers one facedown Damage. So as soon as you enter a space with fire, you take damage. That said, you can move, and like any other action, use Extinguish Fire as an action during movement, by testing agility. For each success result, you may discard Fire from your space or a space you move into later during the round. Fire discarded by this effect does not cause the investigator to suffer Damage. If you can't perform the instruction an app requires, than you don't do anything, and select "no investigators within range". It will then typically get you to do something else (like, move 2 spaces towards the closest investigator).
This video was awesome, started playing with some friends today and as the first type of this game we play it was confusing and watching this we missed a few things 😂
There will be two more in the near future, as already disclosed by the publisher. And as far as I remember they will be for free. But I'm sure they will also release some more as DLC (it's Fantasy Flight after all...)

The only question I was left with was how to resolve it if it says you take 2 facedown damage and suffer 1 horror (will negates). Does will negate both? Or just the horror? If it's both, do you decide how to negate it if you roll a 2? i choose to negate both damage but suffer the horror, or negate the horror and suffer one damage? Thank you for the clear walkthrough of this game! We discovered some things we've been doing wrong (such as monster movement. We always just left it in the room it was in since there was an explorer)
Some of the Damage or Horror says "Take two facedown...". But you stated when you take it, you resolve the effects. Do you know which it is? Also, when something says turn over all of your face down damage, if you've flipped it once, would you flip again if this happened? or does it only flip once? Second, when you make your roll, can you use as many clue tokens as you want, or can you only convert one per roll?
The way I describe it in the video is a little more precise :). I say "unless otherwise stated, you always resolve them face up". So if it says "take two faced own", then you don't resolve their effects, because it's specifically instructing you not to flip them face up. Most will say on them "after resolving, flip back face down", so yes, if an effects causes you to flip it face up again, then you resolve its effect again (and then if it;'s effect says to flip it back down, you flip it back down again). You can covert any number of magnifying glasses to elder signs during a single roll, for a cost of 1 token each.

When in the "attack action", does all the dialogue and "attacks" just include the player that initiated the attack action? Or do players take turns attacking thr monster?
I'm not quite sure I understand the question. Could you maybe provide a time stamp to the area of the video that you are wondering about. As a general reply in the meantime: Actions in the game are performed by characters, and each character is controlled by a player, so when a player is performing an action with their character, it is only that player that is involved in resolving that action. So if I'm attacking a monster on my turn, then no other player would resolve an attack action "during" my action. Does that help?

That's honestly true. Except I almost beat the zombie one once, but I think we took to many turns (The zombie one is a 5-star).
Yes it's a very hard game. But the app is not too strict so you can allow extra actions or gain more clue tokens if you want.

Played this with my friend and my brother yesterday and man, i wish i would have watched this video before we did. While we played mostly correct, i noticed quiet a few things we messed up or didnt do 100% right. Awesome video

I am very glad to see both the actual release of the second edition, and you're How To Play video. Ever since stumbling upon your play through of the first edition last years, I've been excited to try the game for myself. However the complexity of the original, along with the Keeper player requirement, always kept my group from taking the plunge. The new edition is a wonderful direction for players like myself, and I hope that these changes won't prevent you from gaining as much enjoyment from this new edition as you did from the first.
I've been fortunate to find time to play it 5 times so far - and I'm planning on playing with all of you as well :)

first time u reviewed mansions , I bought it, and now because of Ai and for of war effect, and possibility to implement older games , game becomes much easier to prepare and finally additional player is not required to be master and also u can go solo,

Really interested in getting this, the video also really helps in letting me know about the content! Would you say this has high replay value? Or are the expansions necessary for more fresh experiences?
I tend to avoid weighing in on replay value, because that is so dependent on the player. What one person might find replayable, another might not. For what it's worth, I've played the scenarios in the core box multiple times. But again, that doesn't mean you'd do that and enjoy it.

Great tutorial as always!! Its come full circle for you and the channel Rodney with the first episodes I watched being for the original Mansions of Madness and now the second edition haha.
This has become a favourite of the group, we stream the app to a tv via laptop and it works great. Really creates a fun RPG like experience!

Great how to play Rodney. Wanted to ask about your opinion on using the tablet in the game. I'm sure purists will not like adding electronic devices to boardgames, but it would be great to hear your opinion. Do you think that the app makes the game better/easier/more enjoyable/different?
I avoid offering opinions on these sorts of things generally, as it's going to be entirely up to the individual gamer and their tastes. Some will like it, some won't. There's no question in my mind though - this version is the one I'll play from now on.

So here is a question my wife, friends and I can't answer. When the mythos event says "affects the player with the most will" but we have the same amount, who does it apply to? Is this one of the cases where we can decide who or is it to us both?

In the case of a tie (even something like this), the players decide who will be affected. So glad you're enjoying the game - one of my favorites!

The first MoM always interested me, but if I was going to have a "DM" game it was going to be an RPG so I never broke into it. I am torn on the App though if it will be fun to play with so I think I will wait till we get the playthrough before breaking down on this one.

Question! When it comes to horror checks, what do you mean by "in range"? Also, it says things like affecting playing with highest damage, but what if nobody has any damage?
Hey Blargle, you'll find range defined here: th-cam.com/video/a2dsq2GsMSs/w-d-xo.htmlm17s - range is a generic term in this game that doesn't just apply to attacking. It means anything within 3 spaces (but not through doors/walls).
In a case where no one has any damage, then the players are "tied" for highest damage (0 each) and you would resolve ties as described (players choose).
Getting this game second hand (without any organization from the previous owners) was really difficult. But I think I've got a good handle on the game. Me and my family will be able to play tommorow for our little board game hang out

Hi Rodney! Very helpful video and we have some questions! When you’re trying to solve a puzzle, do you roll dice to determine your amount of attempts? Or do you do the amount of the skill required? Also, we had some events happen that required the character with the lowest lore, strength, etc. and we were both tied. How do you break a tie? Thanks!

The video also addresses ties, but we don't have a link to that, but I remember the answer, so you're in luck :) In the case of ties, the players decide. So if it was for lowest Lore and there was a tie, you would just pick which of the tied players would be affected.

Hi Rodney, I have a few questions about the rules and I hope you know the answers.
-May I cast a spell that doesn't include the word "action" whenever I want or am I limmited to a phase (incestigator's or mythos phase)?
-When the "feed the mind spell" says that investigators within range are focused does this mean that they can change the clue tokens to success only in investigator's phase or to the mythos phase too? Does this spell counts in darkness or not?
-When an investigator and a monster are in a room with a darkness token could the investigator attack the monster with a ranged weapon? Is there any difference if the investigator was outsice the room with the monster and the darkness token?
-About the horror check, when an investigator is in range but there is no LOS with the monster - let's say the monster is in a room and the investigator is in a hallway 1 space away from the door- does the investigator has to make a horror check or not?
1) Do you have an example spell in mind? If it doesn't say Action, it will typically give an indication of when it can be used.
2) The effect applies anytime you would roll dice.
3) Darkness does not affect attacking a monster in your room. If you are outside the room, you can't attack with a ranged weapon, as you can't attack through doors.

For start I can't thank you enough for your immediate respone. Now as an example of a spell not having the word "action" I could say the "feed the mind" spell. It doesn't mention when you are supposed to cast it so could it be when another invastigator is performing his actions? Could it be right at the start of mythos phase in order to impove the test to come or before the horror checks?
As far as the darkness conserned, when a monster is inside a room with darkness and the investigator in front of room's door but in another room and 2 spaces away from the monster (straight or diagonally) could he fire his firearm if he has no light source with him?
The Feed The Mind spell effect starts with the word "Action". That means you can only do it on your turn, as an action.
In your darkness example, the darkness doesn't factor in, because if they are in different rooms, they are not in range of each other. You can't shoot through doors (even ones you've already explored though. Just pretend that the characters always close the door when they enter and exit a room, if that helps).
That said, darkness doesn't impact weapons.

I found some instructions about darkness not being able to move 2 steps or do any puzzle or in order to do a puzzle or search action you need to spend 1 movement then do the action. But in edition 2 doesn't refer to anything of the mentioned above, so my questions are:
1. Can you move and resolve a puzzle when moving in a dark area?
2. Can you do 2 steps when moving in a dark area?
Any restrictions would be mentioned in the video (rules from first edition do not necessarily apply here).

The one, or technically two, question(s) I have for this game as I found this game on Steam via MacBook Pro:
1. Do you need the physical items in order to play or can I be able to play it on my laptop without them?
2. The Steam had it available to play as 'single-player' yet the way the game is set up, it seems like it would need more than one player to play, is that correct?

Hey there, this is a board game, that uses an app to manage certain aspect of the game play, but you can't play the game, without the physical components.
You can play single player for sure.
I must have played the 1st edition because although i loved the game there was a lot going on and i was nervous about bringing it into rotation with the responsibility of knowing what to do on my shoulders haha but the tablet componant seems to simplify it
Yes, that does sound like the first edition.
So you can use the tiles and items card of the first edition? And if you own the first edition, do you need to buy the next up coming expansions for the stories or will they just update the app for more stories? Sorry for noob question, just order the game because of your video:)
Not the items, but the tiles, monsters and investigators can be brought over - there is a conversion kit for them included in this edition. You won't need the new expansions if you already have the old ones.
I loved watching your play-through of the original (the spooky atmosphere and the hoods too hohoho). Is this second edition the way to go if given the choice between the two versions?
Hey Power - I avoid reviewing or recommending on the channel. That said, the first edition is out of print now, so getting the second edition would probably be the way to do (new expansions and products are coming out for it).

It depends on whether or not the item says "Action" before it's effect. If it does, then each use requires an action.

What makes a monster "in range"? Is it when in the same room? Adjacent spaces? By line of sight? Do doors block line of sight?

hi Rodney, I have a question about moving through fire. Can I interrupt my movement to extinguish a fire? I am moving two spaces but the first space has a fire I have to pass through. OR do I keep moving and suffer a facedown damage?
What if I decide to move only ONE space into the fire. Do I FIRST suffer a facedown damage and then use my second action to extinguish it?
Lastly if the app instructs to move a monster within range of an investigator but there are NO investigators in range, do you still move the monster or leave it where it is and select No Investigators in range from the app? Thanks!!!
Here are the key rules with fire you need to keep in mind:
Whenever an investigator moves into a space containing Fire, he suffers one facedown Damage.
So as soon as you enter a space with fire, you take damage.
That said, you can move, and like any other action, use Extinguish Fire as an action during movement, by testing agility. For each success result, you may discard Fire from your space or a space you move into later during the round. Fire discarded by this effect does not cause the investigator to suffer Damage.
If you can't perform the instruction an app requires, than you don't do anything, and select "no investigators within range". It will then typically get you to do something else (like, move 2 spaces towards the closest investigator).

The only question I was left with was how to resolve it if it says you take 2 facedown damage and suffer 1 horror (will negates). Does will negate both? Or just the horror? If it's both, do you decide how to negate it if you roll a 2? i choose to negate both damage but suffer the horror, or negate the horror and suffer one damage?

Some of the Damage or Horror says "Take two facedown...". But you stated when you take it, you resolve the effects. Do you know which it is? Also, when something says turn over all of your face down damage, if you've flipped it once, would you flip again if this happened? or does it only flip once?
Second, when you make your roll, can you use as many clue tokens as you want, or can you only convert one per roll?
The way I describe it in the video is a little more precise :). I say "unless otherwise stated, you always resolve them face up". So if it says "take two faced own", then you don't resolve their effects, because it's specifically instructing you not to flip them face up.
Most will say on them "after resolving, flip back face down", so yes, if an effects causes you to flip it face up again, then you resolve its effect again (and then if it;'s effect says to flip it back down, you flip it back down again).
You can covert any number of magnifying glasses to elder signs during a single roll, for a cost of 1 token each.

Can't help you there, I don't make game recommendations (and I haven't played Fury of Dracula :) ).
When in the "attack action", does all the dialogue and "attacks" just include the player that initiated the attack action? Or do players take turns attacking thr monster?
I'm not quite sure I understand the question. Could you maybe provide a time stamp to the area of the video that you are wondering about. As a general reply in the meantime: Actions in the game are performed by characters, and each character is controlled by a player, so when a player is performing an action with their character, it is only that player that is involved in resolving that action. So if I'm attacking a monster on my turn, then no other player would resolve an attack action "during" my action. Does that help?
