Dennis Wilson is one of the most underrated total musicians of all time. The Wilson musical and lyrical DNA shines through yet Denny's soulful originality is truly unique. Whenever I think of Dennis or hear his music, I feel an ache in my heart. His music deeply touches me. You're so correct, there was nothing fake about him. He had the courage to bleed and bare his soul onto vinyl. Speaking of Pacific Ocean Blue; what an incredible journey he takes you on. Filled with pain and anguish? Yes. Guarded optimism and joy? Oh yes. Whenever I listen to Holy Man (even though Taylor Hawkins did the lead vocals) I still can hear Dennis's growly, soulful voice. Taylor did an amazing job and unfortunately, he, like Denny, left us far too soon. Your review was incredibly accurate and it's obvious that you truly "get" DW. That copy of Bambu was deliberately waiting there for only you to purchase. What a brilliant find! I listen to POB, Bambu, and Pet Sounds at least every other day (or every day). I need my BB, DW, CW, BW fix! Music keeps me "somewhat" sane. Thanks again for the beautiful review. 🥰🥰💜💜Rest in peace, Dennis and Carl. Miss you so!
Love this! I've been listening to POB and Bambu, and some other BB songs penned by Dennis. His voice and honest delivery are incredible. You're right...some of the songs are so heavy, it's hard to take it all in sometimes, but they are raw and true. I've be come such a fan of Dennis these past few weeks. Loved Wild Situation (fantastic), It's Not Too Late, Cocktails...
Dennis sang a wonderful encore at Wembley of "you are so beautiful" which moves me still over 40 years later. I have really enjoyed visiting and re visiting the Beach Boys through your reviews, Thanks for posting.
I'm a huge Beach Boys fan and it's nice to be able to see someone on TH-cam, and maybe there's others I just have never seen them, review and talk about their records. I'm a bit older than you at 49 years old but still Pet Sounds was made before I was born and and it's great to see someone your age as passionate about them as I am! A former brother-in-law of mine turned me onto them when I was a kid and I've been hooked ever since. I'm from the Seattle area but was born in Santa Monica, California so used to vacation every summer down there to visit relatives and I bought the Pacific Ocean Blue vinyl at a used record store there called Off the Record back in the 80's. For two years straight they had a excellent version for $75 and a very good version for $55 so I finally saved up enough to buy the very good version and still have it to this day. Hopefully one day you will review that album, it's definitely one of my faves and you're right it is a very heavy record but it got me through a lot of stuff during high school and beyond along with Pet Sounds. I bought a version of Bambu on eBay years ago for over 50 bucks and think I still have it somewhere and then of course bought the Pacific Ocean Blue/ Bambu compilation that was released a few years ago. It really makes you wonder what could've been with him but unfortunately the drugs and alcohol consumed him and he died way too early like many other great artists. Anyways sorry for the long comment here but I really appreciate these reviews that you're doing and look forward to seeing more in the future.
Thanks for the comment man! I love hearing stories like this, of you guys buying these records either when they came out, or having loved them for years. It really shows how amazing this band is (or a lot of bands really) and how they can stretch over generations and still reach people through the power of their music! So cool! I really dig your POB story, I eat that stuff up. I can totally appreciate saving up to buy a record, been there!
When I first heard the instrumental Mexico on the 2-CD Pacific Ocean Blue set, I was absolutely gobsmacked. What a beautiful song! I love the way the song kind of builds up throughout and the subtle mariachi-style horns. I would have loved to see this used on the BB's That's Why God Made the Radio with Beach Boys harmonies added to give Dennis a place on the album.
Great review huge fan of Dennis and the Beach. Boys grew up playing drums to my dads beach boy albums we were both big fans thank you for such a detailed review
Such an amazing album. You really get the sense of Dennis pushing even further after POB. Love Remember Me the highlight track for me. That beseeching long drawn out coda - heartbreaking.
“It’s Not Too Late” sounds like it could’ve been on the LA Light album. love your passion. Wish you could play clips of some of the songs as you review them
Thanks. Great review. Would love to get this album. I’ve heard the 1996 bootleg CD which has some different material and excellent versions of Baby Blue Eyes and Love Surrounds Me. A little more even production and it could have been a smash!
His voice was rough on POB, but it worked. By the time of BAMBU it had more or less collapsed, despite some fine material. Glad this music has received some much deserved exposure.
I just got the RSD release of Bambu for Christmas. I was very pleasantly surprised by how good it was. Thanks for the good review (and recommendation).
Giggens you make amazing, well planned videos and you know what you're talking about. There's so many shitty reviews out there where people say the stupidest stuff and ramble on and on. I know it's ironic to comment on rambling on a 20 minute video, but I never feels like rambling. You stay focused and you do it all in one take which is hard to do. You deserve more subscribers man, really!
Hahaha thanks man! I used to do the whole edit thing, where I would cut it all up and chop it together. I got to the point with that, where I couldn't find the time to sit there and edit a video for 2 hours, and also, we don't talk like that in real life! We just have a conversation, and that's what I try to do with these videos. I do my research, which isn't hard, as I've been studying music my whole life, and I just sit down and spit it out!
Giggens Yes, I know how time consuming editing can be, but still, it's hard to keep a video focused and engaging without a single edit. I have a question for you, I'm a huge Beatles and Beach Boys fan like you, what is the next logical band to go too?
After I got into those guys when I was a kid, my next step of diving head first into a band was the Who. They have so much to choose from, and have some of the most talented rockers on the planet in that band. Pick up Who's Next or Quadrophenia; it'll change your life man
Just wondering if you have heard the new Foo Fighters album, there’s a song called Sunday Rain that Taylor Hawkins sings (and Paul McCartney plays drums on) and he sounds so much like Dennis it’s eerie. I’m guessing you know that he sang Holy Man at the end of the second disc on the Bambu sessions too.
I think it's interesting that note that many of the songs recorded for this album were considered for the Light Album, Time For Bed, Constant Companion, Wild Situation and I Love You. I think Bambu is a fantastic album just as good as Pacific Ocean Blue, the standout tracks are Love Remember Me which was co-written by Steve Kalinich who also co wrote Be Still with Dennis, It's Not Too Late is sooooo good and I always wish they put it on Keepin The Summer Alive just to add Some Dennis to that album. I really think in the future there needs to be a Dennis Wilson Boxset with all his other unreleased solo stuff and Beach Boys stuff released, because I bet there is still some great stuff out there. I've heard great things about an unreleased Dennis tune from 1971 called Behold The Night and there is that beautiful song from the Holland sessions called Carry Me Home as well. There is apparently a song called I Gotta Get Outta Here which was recorded for Bambu and was considered for the Light Album that is just amazing, so yeah I really want a Dennis Boxset at some stage
I suggest you review "The Many Moods of Murry Wilson." I have a 2009 U.K. CD copy, and the notes for the CD are hilarious. I'm not embarrassed to admit I actually like the album.
Always been a big Dennis fan. My band, The Ladykillers, featured on the ESQ "Only With You" tribute CD to Dennis released back in 2008---With the likes of Brian Wilson, Carnie Wilson (w/ Marilyn Wilson-Rutherford, Wendy Wilson & The Honey's) David Marks, Dean Torrence and Matt Jardine also featured. Bambu is great, even if it is unfinished! I got that record on RSD as well. :)
Great review! I know the album wasn't driven by songs written by Dennis, but Carli Munoz hit such a vibe as songwriter. I would have guessed Dennis wrote many songs, but Carli did and Dennis fell in love with them. And for good reason.
I tried to look for these songs again because I listened to them before but some songs are not available in my country. He's a bum is an example. Do you know why?
This is out of nowhere, but I think (unless your name is way more common than I realize) that I used to hang out with you on a =w= message board, like, 10-12 years ago (holy shit). Oddly enough, your name popped into my head the other day, but I didn't follow up on it. Just now, I saw this as a related video on the newest Weezer song. What the hell!
god, i'm trying to remember...it was on a really small site that was originally albumfive. i think its abbreviation was "atw" but not the main one! maybe elwoodbleus? whatever it was, i posted *a lot*!
Bill Gallagher I remember your name man!! And yeah across the weez was so cool back then, must've been 2004 to 2006 or so, I think. I do remember Elwood blues as well! Good to see you man!
Also he didn't know if he would do it,because he put his heart and sole into it,and he thought no one cared.his father mentaly and physically,so there was a reason for the drugs, drinking and smoking, and he never found love.
Is this the version that's on the album? th-cam.com/video/oavn26YeVbk/w-d-xo.html I've subscribed and will check out your other reviews. Love the Beach Boys too!
I think it's nice but not as good as Pacific Ocean Blue. For that stand-alone release on vinyl I think it would have flowed better if it was a single/40-min LP. I was disappointed to note that all the tracks on the Bambu stand-alone release had been released before: I really do not like it when music is re-released as the same music but with different packaging. :-)
Could you imagine if the Beach Boys just didn't have to contend with Mike Love's negativity??!! Or if strictly Brian & Dennis were allowed to write one album, then Brian n Carl, then Brian & Al, even Brian, perhaps w/Bruce, who is a Grammy Award-winning songwriter in his own right, then Brian & Mi.... Wait. Scratch that.
@@zachb3573 The throat surgery was a result of that altercation. He had money and was technically in a vocal group. I don't even think it was just drugs, he possibly had Barrett's or Reinke's edema or whatever Steve-O has that makes it more comfortable for him to talk and sing at an incorrect place in his oesophagus, where it resembles more like lining of the stomach than the normal pinkish lining of the throat. My uncle did enough blow to kill 11 horses into his early 40s, and still abuses alcohol. He still talks smooth as silk.

sunlvr330 His songs are truly from the depths of his soul, there’s so much pain and honesty there. But they are incredibly rewarding listens!
Great job! Love Dennis and I usually don't dig TH-cam record reviews but this was great
Thanks Alan!! Just trying to spread some Bambu love around
I love your reviews! I could listen to you talk about the Beach Boys forever! Good job.
Thanks David!! I wish this was my full time job haha
Dennis sang a wonderful encore at Wembley of "you are so beautiful" which moves me still over 40 years later. I have really enjoyed visiting and re visiting the Beach Boys through your reviews, Thanks for posting.
I can imagine that for sure. Even just seeing videos of him singing that are very moving
Dennis helped write You Are So Beautiful but was never credited.

Nice work. The Wilson brothers are a treasure.
They are!
"All Alone" was on the soundtrack to the "Endless Harmony" documentary. Enjoyed this review. "It's Not Too Late" is a powerful song. Long live Dennis!
Totally! And yup, I messed up the Endless Harmony cd!
“It’s Not Too Late” sounds like it could’ve been on the LA Light album. love your passion. Wish you could play clips of some of the songs as you review them
Thank you! I wish I could too, but TH-cam is funny about that haha
As soon as POB came out, I snapped up a copy. Killer album. Bambu also kills. 👍
Just ordered it! I have the cd to go with PCB but needed to RSD vinyl! Great review giggens!

Endless Harmony! Yes, that's what I should have said, great catch man!
This record is genius. i love it! I may be nuts but i prefer it to POB though I love both.
Was it Young Ones in Kutztown? That's where I got mine.

Stan Love and some d-bag named Rocky Pamplin beat Dennis for giving drugs to Brian. They purposefully hit him in the throat to end his singing career.
I remember reading that, man that's sad :(
