You nailed this review Giggens! Pete was trying to do something different for this record and he succeeded! Keith wasn’t at full strength but in a weird way that made the record unique. It is never considered as a great album and I think it is excellent. Great job on the review.
I have owned this one for a while, but I haven't been able to get into the deeper cuts yet. Your reviews always make me dig deeper into some great albums that I previously overlooked. Thanks for your reviews, Giggens.
Deep in the back of my mind is an unrealized sound Every noise that I hear on the street say it soon could be found... Who Are You was released just before starting my junior year in HS, I really got into it at the time. I got to see them in 1980, unfortunately without Keith - Kenney had an impossible task.
I'd love it if you reviewed "The Who By Numbers", it's my favorite of theirs. I love this one, too (I was 13 years old when it came out). My favorite tracks are "Had Enough", "Love Is Coming Down", "New Song" and "Music Must Change". All the best in 2020, Giggens.
At the time, I'm pretty sure Pete decided to go for a more poppy rock style because he didn't really like punk, which was dominating at the time. As for Keith's drumming, I'm pretty sure the producer suggested that Keith should go for a more chill drumming style, again, going along the line of the more poppy rock style. Also, some of the tracks from this album were on the Lifehouse Chronicles, so its possible the album could have originally been a 1978 Lifehouse. Great album and great review! P.s. Check out the Who's version of No Road Romance and Empty Glass, amazing songs that should have been on the album.
There's two other interesting vinyl variants to look for, in Canada they pressed this on clear red vinyl and it's a decent sounding pressing and Japan was issued an audiophile edition.
I remember reading that they got Keith to sit on the chair so that his paunch wasn't showing. I can understand why some Who fans don't like it because of the synths and Keith not being at his best, but personally I loved it and it was a regular on my turntable when I was at university. Who can resist that punchy opening of New Song!
@@Giggens i tell you what, i think the face dances and it's hard albums are under appreciated as well.do you know john heaton? He's an expert on beatles related and other classic albums. And you with those regular excellent beach boys updates i've got a kind of blueprint and primer for two of the most primo bands in popular music! Have a great weekend!
@@Giggens come to think of it, i find a lot of albums nowadays are often mediocre and couldn't hold a candle to the older stuff. Makes me realize that those earlier records weren't so bad after all.
The Who by Numbers was the first album I owned by them when I was a teenager. I thought it was a solid effort and in the same mold of Who's Next. Also By Numbers was current, not back catalog so it felt like it was for me. Who Are You was different and I did not take to the album right away. It took some years before it took. Not one of my favorite albums of theirs but it is good.
Happy New Year Giggens Great album but for me not the best I prefer the next (I mean Faces Dances...Not Who's Next...I love Who's Next...It's not what i wanna say...Poor me...I Hope you understand what i wanna say!...Ha Ha Ha)
Trick of the Light is great on the original LP and CD, but it's a travesty on the remixed CD. Keith's initial explosive drumming at the start is replaced by a very limp drum part.

Thanks Gracious! Yeah, it's an underrated album for sure!

Poor Keith, and seriously Poor Kenny. He was amazing with the Small Faces, but no one can fill the shoes of Keith Moon! Although Zak comes close!
This is such a great underrated album. So glad to see it getting some love 😊👍
Totally! It needs more attention!
Great review. Thank you 🙏🏻
Thank you for watching!

I may have done that one, I can't remember. I'll have to go back and check!

Totally! Their versions are excellent for sure, and interesting comment about keeping things pop, I can see that!

Awesome, thanks for the head's up! I'll keep my eyes out for those!

Seriously! It's an amazing album!
I really like this album. It gets too much bad rap.great cover too.again, excellent and insightful review giggens.
Thanks Cosmic! And yeah, this album is seriously cool

Found it for $3…What a great album😁
Awesome!

Great comment VinylSearch! Yeah, this would not be the best intro album to get into the Who. This one takes some time!
That's nice lp. It has some pretty nice(for me) differences comparing to their other albums!
Totally!
I always thought the photo cover was done at a garbage dump
It looks like it haha
Happy New Year Giggens

Haha I hear you man! And yeah, Face Dances is awesome! Happy New Year!
I always thought that front cover looked like a BACK cover. Imagine "side A" song titles beneath Roger/John and "side B" titles beneath Keith/Pete.
I can see it, that's awesome!

Sounds so different!
