    Movie was done wrong by its advertising campaign. It looked like an intense supernatural thriller/slasher film set in a haunted asylum and ended up being way more of a psychological drama, which the audience didn't expect and didn't come to see.

      As a movie that speaks to abuse victims, this is an extremely unfortunate fact about the filming of the movie.

      Have to say, my absolute favorite thing in horror stories is when they have some set of rules for its monsters/creatures/etc to work in and be defetated with.
      When they can do anything just because, I feel a lot less involved because there is no point, the story will do whatever, whenever.
      But if there ARE rules, I can feel the ods a lot better.

    As others have pointed out, Crimson Peak isn't really a "horror" per se, but for that reason I think it wasn't maybe treated fairly. Taken for what it is, I think it's absolutely an interesting "charming far fetched ghost story".

    • @thomasplummer8103
      @thomasplummer8103 3 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      Crimson Peak is a Gothic horror Romance. It fits very well with Late 18th Century/early 19th century books of the same ilk, with themes and imagery that could have come from the pen of Poe or been a cousin to Sardonicus.

    • @Goblincow
      @Goblincow 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Crimson peak is absolutely a horror film. It's one of those few films that swaps genre multiple times, which del Toro uses to create a gothic romance, giallo murder mystery, psychological horror, and really blend and contrast those genres to present an atmosphere of constant suspense that contrasts moments of visceral realistic horror, the same contrast he explores in pans labyrinth and shape of water especially.

      It’s gothic horror/gothic romance. Like, textbook.
      The “horror” part of gothic horror isn’t the main event like it is in most horror media. It’s always used as an auxiliary device to tell a human story. The intent isn’t really to scare you, which is usually a quality that defines the genre of horror.
      The fact that Wuthering Heights can kinda be classified as gothic horror really drives this point home.
      Crimson Peak is a gothic horror/romance and people should know that going into it.

      As a ex psych ward patient the feeling of being questioned or being dismissed is very true even after going out of this place, your family never look at you the same way. I had to be heavily medicated while there, and the docs wanted to lock me in for 3 months (I had a maniac episode, I'm bipolar) but thankfully my family and my quiet demeanor freed me in three days only. I had a almost blackout of memories by the time I was there and after, I talked horrible things to my cousin who was with me and I can't even remember to this day. Mental ill people don't get easy, never take your mental health for granted.

And the soundtrack/score is pretty slick too (edit: and if I remember correctly, the studio also drastically re-cut the directors version in favor of a more “action” style film, so that may be why you see it as boring, because they tried to make a traditional action movie out of a cyber-noir dystopian action film?)

"As Above, So Below" is just everything for me. But not everyone going in would get it without some force-feeding which might have hurt the movie since then it might be seen as too much. It deserved better than what it got.

      It does a lot of things differently and has internal coherence (which is always a plus) and it manages to work into the plot voodoo as a protective force and not just as "scary magic", which is unfortunatelly something very rare in fiction.
      The only thing I can't quite get over is how the main character never flinched with the list of ingredients in the last ritual. I mean, I know she was stressed and my knowledge on voodoo is almost non-existant, but even from a merely symbolical start point even, some of those ingredients... didn't sound like anything meant to be protective her from evil AT ALL. The twist about the husband being an antagonist wasn't actually a surprise to me. I called it early on in the movie. My mom was like "No Way!" Then it was revealed, and said "Son of a Bitch! You were right!" 😂😂 I love me some Charles S Dutton, and if you were familiar with his movie and especially tv roles, he was generally the "good guy", the "strong and supportive husband, father, friend etc". A suspense, supernatural horror film wasn't really what you would expect him to be in. Even in Alien 3, as one of the convicts, he protected Ripley, gave a rousing speech, and sacrificed himself at the end. I had a feeling that they'd subvert expectations and make him a bad guy.

    I loved Gothika!!! Having a psychiatrist analyze her own downfall is always very interesting. The movie starts with psychiatrist Halle disregarding her patients “crazy” stories about the devil assaulting her etc... Then Halle herself has to leave her rational behind, and try to now explain her “crazy” supernatural stories to her colleges, who are now treating her. (until she is transferred) And unsurprisingly they also disregard her stories. Yes, that part may have been predictable, but I found it was well done and still very interesting. I also greatly appreciated the twist ending and reason behind the murder of her husband. We see early on that her husband is a narcissist and has visions of grandeur etc... But we disregard those traits at that point, since it fits with the narrative. It is really not uncommon for Doctors to have an overinflated sense of self, they often do feel like gods, because they hold human life in their hands. Or in this case, in a way, he holds patients sanity in his hands. And controls most of what happens to them. Mix that sense of power with some deviant thoughts and urges, and you end up with quite the psychopath! And like many other psychopaths he was able to charm and manipulate everyone around him, including expert psychiatrists, so that they would never doubt he was capable of such horrifying acts. In my opinion, great movie! 👌

    Then there was also The Village. It was done wrong by its own marketing as a horror film. It's a love story with a social commentary about the loss of innocence, with much if its horror being psychological. Yes, there were monsters, but they were only a small part. While I'm here, I wanted to recommend you check out Silver Bullet, 85'. I'm curious what your take on the plot would be as while it's campy at times I still hold it in the same regard as the Great Old Ones such as Alien, The Thing, Poltergeist, etc. Anywho, hope you like it if you check it out.

      Glenn Danzig is the guy's name and his comics brand is called Veritok. I have a couple issues of his G.O.T.H. title and I found it a little generic, with a monster man escaping some kind of secret lab. Maybe if I found more issues it might get better, but I have yet to find any.

    Again, Stephen King's The Night Flier. Not only was it so well done in King's opinion that he wrote 2 sequels that were never made, but despite the yawning and hate it got, it's an impressive look at sensationalist media juxtaposed with a ravenous monster. In modern times, when so much of the media is centered in getting more views, likes, and so on, this rings more true than ever before! You should really check it out!

  • @savagenature1

    Overall, I very much enjoyed Gothika.
    That being said, probably my biggest issue with the film is that it writes itself into a corner and then chooses to just ignore it and hope the audience doesn't ask this question: How does Miranda get absolved of Doug's murder?
    After Miranda discovers the truth about Doug, including the girl that was still being held captive, the Sherif points out that Miranda is still a murder suspect. Even after it is revealed that the Sheriff was Doug's partner in these crimes, his point about Miranda being a murder suspect still stands and goes unanswered. We're just left to assume that everything worked itself out in the end.
    The sad truth is that regardless of Doug's crimes, Miranda did murder him, and thus should go to prison. Though she was Possessed, her body still did the dirty work and no judge or jury is going to believe a story about Possession.
    So, how is Miranda absolved of killing Doug and the Sheriff (she shot him in the head while he was on fire)?
    The only explanation I can think of is that she and Pete (and possibly her lawyer) must've had a conversation and decided to fudge some of the details in order to make everything more believable to the judge and jury:
    First, they fudge the details to make it seem like Miranda killed the Sheriff in self-defense rather than an execution. Not too difficult since he was actually trying to kill her and Pete witnessed it.
    Now for Doug. They decide on this narrative: Miranda went home that night, discovered Doug's secret, had a psychotic break, and killed him in a moment of temporary insanity, hence why she couldn't remember doing it.
    Miranda would still likely be sentenced to psychiatric care, but Pete will oversee it and because he knows the truth, he will see to it that she is treated like a V.I.P. and get her out as quickly as possible.
    Obviously, showing all of that would be too long, but I believe that we did need to at least have that conversation where they decide their game plan because it would not only answer the question of how Miranda is absolved of the murder but also serve as the first time that Miranda and Pete have a conversation in which he actually believes her and talks to her as an equal and not a crazy person.

    "It's bad because it's just like every other movie" is not a valid argument. Not only because the plot twist was apparently actually really valid, but because doing something that's been done isn't automatically a demerit. The golden rule of cliché usage: A cliché is not something that must never be done ever, it is simply something that has been done so many times that, if you do choose to do it, you have to do it really well.
