  • Hello guys and gals, it's me Mutahar again! This time we have to sit and have a serious discussion during this wild week where we look at the new line up of gamer muzzles to hit the market. This is supposed to be a voice dampener but I seriously question anyone who buys this. Thanks for watching!

As silly as it might look and all that, for folks that live inside apartments with paper-thin walls and / or work nightshifts and only have time when everyone else is dead-sleeping, this might be one of the few ways for them to be able to actually voicechat with their friends at night while being somewhat respectful of their neighbours. Definitely very niche though, but I don't think it's a completely dead market for those people.

These companies are missing out: make it look like a badass gasmask or fighter-pilot oxygen mask and you'd have gamers being into it. But these things look like an interface for some 'special' VR games.
The idea isn't a bad one: there's a lot of folks who play late and have family or roomate who go do bed and even normal inside voice is too much late at night.

If I could actually talk at normal volumes and not worry about waking anybody else up I would take it pretty fast. And before anyone asks, no I don't talk loud, my house transfers sounds pretty badly, so even normal levels of talking can be heard a floor away. On top of that, with loud headphones covering what I'm saying from my ears so I naturally talk louder anyways. A product like the Mutalk, which is geared for VR, could actually help me quite a bit and I imagine I'm not alone in my situation. $200 is still pretty steep for me but maybe one day we could get a cheap one.

As someone who lives in a house with thin walls and constantly get angry messages whenever I speak too loudly, I could see this being useful.
It's definitely NOT ready, and looks stupid as heck, on top of being way too expensive for what it is- but the technology behind it is actually really cool, and if they added facial tracking for VR games to it, I could see it genuinely being a cool hobbyist's pickup

In the present day where we are all forced to work in office even though 90% of our actual meetings are on online, the noise in office spaces can be quite overwhelming. I can definitely imagine larger companies providing these at some point in the future. Also, I would definitely have appreciated something like this when I was a student living with roommates in rooms with very thin walls. VRChat allows people to socialize and be themselves in ways that their current living circumstances might not allow them. The issue is that if you're not living alone then the noises and words you might make while spending time with people in VR could be heard by people you would rather not.
Or in short: this can be an invaluable privacy device for people socializing in VR, especially for the more intimate forms of socializing

i tend to at least mostly agree with most of the stuff you post... but honestly you were probably onto something with the whole living alone effecting your judgement of this. depending on where you live, if a light sleeper is 1-2 apartments away from you just talking normally (even whispering) can wake them due to how easily sound transmits. if you have shared ventilation perhaps even the whole complex. there are reasons why i don't actually do anything involving my voice online and this is one of them. soundproofing a room is expensive (and in my case not permitted) so if i want to do some late night gaming with vc (not interested anyways but eh) or maybe do a voiceover in the dead of night when i get home i have 2 options: wake up everyone else and get interrupted every 3-5 seconds with people screaming to shut up or find somewhere else. 200 usd doesn't sound too bad rn considering the state of the housing market. the products shown don't seem effective(or comfortable) enough for my case but perhaps someone else.

externally-cancelling microphone might look stupid visually, but I still think it's a viable product that definitely has some use, particularly for those mid-day sexy voice clips we all send while at work. And while I'm joking about that last point, I still do think it's viable product, such as with business talk in public places, or people who are a bit paranoid about privacy or such.

    • @joshsg6525
      @joshsg6525 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Muta isn't considering the uses for people who are down on their luck living in apartments and units.
If soundproofing your voice only costs $200 it'd be super useful. Saves fighting with neighbours and land lords and such.
There's a lot of potential here if it works correctly. I've had some nights where I made up parodys but I had to make the track on my pc then drag my laptop out to my car to record on it and the laptop no longer works.
And also streaming. High energy streamers or angry dickheads like me could really benefit from not waking people up while making content or "content" in my case.

I definitely would love to have one of those Gamer Muzzles. Here where I live its not very common to hear someone speaking english out loud. People also tend to not respect personal space too much. Also the houses/apartments here are not made with any insulation/sound proofing at all in mind so any and all talking I do can be heard right outside and this is a high density area without any traffic to hide the sound of my voice.
About 10 years ago, me and my brother were playing mortal kombat on our xbox just having fun being loud when someone walking around outside heard us screamed something at us and threw a rock at our window. Since then I get anxious whenever I'm online talking at all I just don't feel safe. With the gamer muzzle I might finally be able to let loose.

Design and price wise I'm not sure, But I genuinely think this could be helpful for a lot of households

sure, it may look a bit silly, but the function is useful: if you have gypsum walls or you're in a very loud place, or have some anxiety disorder and don't want others to hear you.

those gamer muzzles are actually designed originally for courtroom stenographers! it's called a stenomask and it's actually a super useful tool.

I can see at least one potential use for this. I live in a tiny apartment and I occasionally need to practice on my Trumpet. As anybody with a brain can figure out, trumpet practice is not accepteble use case for an apartment. Therefore I use the best mutes on the market to silence the instrument. Yamaha even makes mutes with built in microphones that recreates the sound to what it would sound like without the mute.
I see singers with thin walls would be a perfect customer for these products, they can practice loud without disturbing anyone and be able to record and listen back for feedback.

That looks like some tactical equipment useful in the battlefield, but some designs just... induce hilarity.

It only lowers your voice, so you'd still hear them, but they would sound like bane sluring drunk words.

I think the idea is great. My gf and I love to play together online, sometimes with other friends on Discord. The problem is that they always hear us double because we are gaming in the same room…but of course these mufflers look stupid and are properly pretty unhygienic
