Brilliant! I’m always suspicious of a Landrover that’s not leaking EP90, as you say it’s usually because someone has been neglecting routine maintenance. They aren’t like a modern car, they need constant care. If owners keep up with the required care and pay attention to a new noise when it’s first apparent, rather than put up with it until it’s a major issue, then a Landrover will not let you down. A Landrover should not appeal to anyone who does not enjoy tinkering.
Ten oil levels on my 109 2 axles ,2 swivels ,gbox ,engine ,trans box ,steering relay ,steering box ,oil bath filter. Fortunately the roamerdrive shares oil. If it was a fairy overdrive I’d have 11
Hi Mike, looked almost a carbon copy of the ball on my TD5, same side even. The grease was leaking into the diff, not through the swivel seal, on mine.
I wouldn't mind but the swivel oil/grease levels are supposed to be checked every service. Unfortunately a lot of people either never bother getting a service checklist from their dealer (it used to be published in the Workshop Manual, but it hasn't been for about 25 years now), or they take it to a garage who's idea of a "service" is just engine oil and filter.
Yes I went over this for the customer and was suspicious of the level of lube in the swivels due to the corrosion - The grease will not fix the clunking but will help until a decision is made to repair the damage
I had both my swivels replaced just over a year ago with the black rather than chromed ones it had, as I read the chrome ones pit quicker and nick the grease seal on the swivel ball, I was constantly topping the grease up to be sure I never ran out. Had the OEM service kits so timken bearings etc from Paddocks. Made sure to get the G suffix so the seal and bearings were quality
It's so worth fitting leather swivel gaitors, my '87 90 has perfect swivel ball surfaces. The only downside is you lose a little steering lock, as you need to adjust them to prevent the gaitors being holed.
I would put grease in them if they were being replaced with new - but IMO gear oil would be better at this point than a "one-shot" grease - love to hear opinions - I just checked mine and added 90w gear oil as used in diffs and t-case
You get a lot of chances to check whether it has any grease left by just getting under the truck once in a while for a quick inspection. My 2015 Puma 110 had a seal replaced under warranty at only 12000 miles. It would appear they go on for ever or knock out very quickly. Ball surface was OK so don't know why the seal failed so soon. I think it would have been about £500 at main dealer prices, made me feel better having taken out extended warranty after the factory three year term. Just out of interest I had an advisory on the latest MOT. The drivers seat belt was slightly damaged. Normal problem, easy to shut it in the door striker. They wanted £385 to fit a new inertia belt assembly. I said no thanks, got one from eBay for £119 (RRP is £187) so was that two hours to fit? They did give me the part number though so I could source it myself which I thought was decent.
Did you know that LR labour rates start from the time the mechanic gets the card to walk out in the lot to pick up the vehicle to returning it to the lot once the job is done?
@@BritannicaRestorations That's a bit like saying chassis corrosion starts as soon as a brand new truck is driven off the assembly line into the open air.
About your PM. Mike I think a lot of the world thinks the same, lol... I like to regularly check the level of mine, usually right up to them in fact... Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more.
What type of grease should one use if you don't have ready access to the standard "squeeze tube" ball joint grease , and how much should one put in Mike?
Such a shame to see this, it isn't difficult to check and if you don't have a grease gun you can use a disposable icing bag and a pot of grease. My balls are fine, thanks for asking.
If the balls were not pitted that bad, then the grease would stay in - I think if they were filed with oil, it would come out as fast as you were filling!
Mike. Thought you were genuflecting ? This Td5 Defender owner prayers have been answered and if one can find the Castrol 20w40 oil in the 20ltr pail form, change oil fluids with this lubricant ! V.
@@BritannicaRestorations Will do, got mot next week. Should pass with it as an advisory - I watched your last videos on swivels recently, kinda put me off :) Cheers, always enjoy you content and learn something.
Great Video Mike just out of interest what should the level be with the one shot grease ? Just so I would know if I've lost half, if you know what I mean cheers Mike
Mike, watch out, otherwise Justin sends you back to old blighty on a slow boat. Truth hurts. One bag of grease per ball, check level as per service manual. On my S 3, I cross drilled the top pin and fitted a grease nipple. So, the the top pin and railco bush stays greased. Have fun "restoring" the front axle and diff, by the clonk.
How does someone let a 2006 Defender get in such abysmal condition? People like this just piss me off. They whine and complain that Landy's are always breaking down, but it's because they do absolutely zero maintenance. My 1996 Discovery 300tdi is in far better condition than this Defender and it's a decade older, but it's had regular maintenance and has never once let me down. Treat your Landy right and it will always get you home.
To be fair, looking from Britain, Trudeau does come across as one of these blokes who accepts chemical castration as a virtue signal to feminist politicians.
uses for a tie wrap / zip tie #247 .. temporary dip-stick ( you can use white ones for best contrast )

Yes, exactly
Yes, with a LandRover, worry about when it's NOT leaking oil because this may mean it's got none in it.

Good call,lm to old to use me balls, even Viagra don't work it just makes me neck stiff.

Downside is they can hold moisture in if not maintained properly - seen many a rusty ball behind the leather

If they leak grease they are going to spew out oil!
Some people are reluctant to have oil patches in their garage

Good call on the warranty!
Bloody hell - £200 labour to fit the seat belt!!!

375ML CV grease

That is good news!
Is it better therefore to continue to use good old oil instead of grease ?
At least you know where you stand level wise with oil ?
If the balls were not pitted that bad, then the grease would stay in - I think if they were filed with oil, it would come out as fast as you were filling!

Are you going to service the front axle? Perhaps show us the “Mike’s custom ball servicing?”😂

Not sure - when I get a truck on the lift I will check it out
