Wah! Kya Kehne, especially the second piece where Ustad Shahid Parvez shows what his Singing Sitar can achieve. He has taken the gayaki ang established by Ustad Vilayat Khan to the point where the instrument becomes the vocalist. He has also engineered his sitar to produce a tonal quality unmatched by other sitars in use. No other sitarist is as sensitive to the maintenance and upkeep of his instrument and its tonal quality as he. His mastery and skill as a sitarist is equally matched by his supreme attention to the art of presentation. It is what is termed 'saliqa'. His completeness as a musician should be a beacon to the next generation of sitarists now appearing on the scene.

Ustadji is the embodiment of perfection as far as sitar vadan is concerned. He has achieved a height which is difficult for others.

The Rageshree gat in Rupak taal is very interesting and recently played by Ustadji and his disciples quite often. Seemingly simple, it allows a wide range of improvisations.

Please explain to me why the young men behind Shahid Parvez in the blue and white t-shirts are SO DISRESPECTFUL IN THEIR ATTITUDE, fidgety, giggling like very young children, dressing as if for a game of basketball, not paying attention??? What gives them the right to DISRESPECT such a master behind His Back!? I am a beginning student from USA and is unforgivable- am I missing something of Indian culture? Shame on them.

Dear Steve, we are sorry if you have felt the same. Many times young learners are not so mature enough to understand nuances of classical arts, but still we try to reach out to that segment to embrace through the beauty of classical arts. :)

@@Dragonslab Thank you for that reply. I first heard Shahid Parvez play for the first time on an Indian Label this raga Ragasree. It is a s beautiful a thing now as it was then, back in 1987 or maybe later. I had not received my first sitar yet but was a student in my head at least. On this studio recording there is a phrase that is much used (in this live case it is from 4:24-4:31 - but, how to say it - on the studio recording the sound and fullness and ringing of all the sympathetic stings plus his sustaining of the phase and lasting note left me breathless. I actually grabbed the CD and circled that part of the Alap with times circled in huge letters. I still have it in my collection of greatest sitar recordings, along with Nikhil-ji, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, and Shujaat Khan, so many others. I think it was called "Art of the Sitar" the rest is in Japanese or Chinese if I remember. His name and the ragas were in English, luckily for me. He looks to be 16 years old! Thank you so much for this.
