That's some dazzling gardening you're doing there. Thank you for going to all the work to put out three shows per week. Very generous of you to share your time and your expertise. There's no point in controlling the field pea aphids with Azera, since it won't stop the pea curculio bugs which are headed your way. You're going to need the Sevin for the curculio bug anyway.
Correct. No point in using that pricey Azera when we're going to be spraying cheap Sevin on them later anyways.
@@LazyDogFarm but in Canada u can not use sevin unless u get a agricultural or structural license. Sevin was the go to pesticide for many pests now gardeners can spray with soap or let the birds eat the insects snd see how far that gets u haha and they complain about food shortage and pesticides Get ur agricultural license so u are ready for the pests and spot spay if ur early

I thought about that. But I'm running out of time as far as our tomato growing season goes. Not sure they'd grow fast enough to produce any before the heat gets them.

I put fish down every year in all of my gardens every time I go fishing which is every weekend I bring home fish and plant them in a bed and I have grown tomato plants without anything other than fish and turned out great
I think it definitely helps if you do it year after year, but not sure there are any benefits seen in the first year. At least that's my experience so far.

Travis, for your determinate tomatoes on the 5' T-posts, take a piece of 2' or longer rebar and use a couple of tie-wraps to attach 6 or 8" of the rebar to the top 6 or 8" of the T-post. That will give you another 18" or more of Florida Weave height if you need it.
One more tip, I bought a Ryobi fogger/sprayer last year at Home Depot, and it is great for spraying Spinosad and other water based pesticides on the garden. It's like a cross between a small leaf blower with a sprayer in the middle of the stream (set to mist). Nice even coverage and the air flow flips the leaves up so you can get the bottom and top with ease. Gives very good even coverage. Mine is the model P2805 (not the electrostatic models). They advertise it as being for garden and pesticide spraying. I'm on my 2nd year using it (first spray was yesterday this season).
I have a bunch of 2' pieces of rebar, so I might resort to that if they keep growing. I also like the idea of the fogger. The backpack sprayer I have now puts out a pretty fine mist, but I believe the fogger is probably more effective.

Water and high temp and no pests are also part of a bumper crop raccoons can wipe out small corn plots in a night or the crows
..i had some tomato plants going down & trying Everything, so out of frustration i pulled up the Worst & found about ten baby snails sucking on the roots, so i treated the remainder to kill Snails & everything has been Fine..

I am growing my corn on a plot I had chickens for 3 years. No grass, lots of poo, I use electric netting and a couple of tractors.
We have the 90s and 70s here... I hope it cools some, the triple digit heat indexes is hard on the garden and the gardener!

While I never used a chicken tractor specifically for corn, I used to park it over my planting beds for a few weeks during the Winter. The chickens would level the beds and produce enough fertilizer for the Spring crop. I just had to move the tractor from one bed to another and reform the beds afterwards.
However, I have grown amazing crops of sweet corn by plowing in chicken manure in the Fall or Winter using nothing else but lime. I would plant cowpeas in the row middles of the corn and get a good pea harvest in the Fall, also without any added fertilizer.

It 's no secret that Corn is a heavy feeder....either heavy composted maturing or added Nitrogen. The leaves need to be a dark green, if they're not,, fertilize immediately. I see so many videos where corn is so mediocre....they don't understand what healthy corn or real corn on the cobbs looks like. Keep fertilizing and keep watering.

My tomatoes have finally slow down because of the tomatoes they are putting on. We were adding a string it seemed like everyday there for a while! Garden looks awesome as always Travis keep up the good work and I will follow right behind ya here in the savannah area.
The vegetative slow-down was welcomed here. Went from pruning indeterminates every couple days to once a week.
Ordered some of your corn. Not sure what I will do with it, but I’ve been intrigued by the kernels. Thanks for sharing.

I grew my potatoes 2 years ago using the Ruth stout method of straw. I’ll never use any other method when I plant them.
I'm gonna be interested to see how ours compare.
I grew some field corn last year with no fertilizing. Actually, I was even more extreme with it than that... I grew it on lawn that had been tarped for a few weeks, not tilled (buried utilities I didn't want to risk disturbing), surface sown and covered with old potting soil to bury the seeds. I eventually gave it some woodchip mulch to keep the weeds down without running the mower between the rows. It produced about a pound of dried, shelled Jimmy Red field corn for every four feet of row. It might be important, though, that nothing had ever grown in either spot before except unfertilized motley crabgrass and weed lawn. So for field corn at least, it will tolerate more abuse than idyllic dream garden conditions.
As an aside, I can't tell that Jimmy Red is any better than Bloody Butcher, but both make excellent hush puppies.
Makes sense that corn would excel in new soil like that. And I agree on the red corn comparison. They're both great, but can't tell much of a difference. Supposedly the whiskey distillers like Jimmy Red better because it makes good whiskey.
I planted 2 varieties of sweet corn this year. Twice. Not one sprouted.
My nephew had to replant his sweet corn too. His was spotty.

I have eaten many a cathead biscuit in my life. We also have several cats and I've never seen a cat that has a head as big as that onion. lol
Messed up and planted my corn 2 weeks before Easter (7b)... I should have listened to the old-timers who told me never plant before Easter sunday... Only had about 20% come up. I guess it was too cold to cheat a few weeks this year.
It's always fun to take chances with early planting. Sometimes it works wonderfully, sometimes it doesn't. But you never know until you try.
Sun Gold cherry tomatoes do not get orange. They are yellow. DELICIOUS!!!
The ones I've grown get orange if you leave them on the plant to turn orange.
I just got a fertilizer injector after watching your videos… wow now that’s a very handy tool. Very easy to hook up to my drip system. I picked up some agrothrive since it’s reasonably priced for an organic liquid fertilizer. That stuff works pretty well. My plants have responded really well. I may just use that instead of the Alaska fish fertilizer from now on. Thanks for the recommendations!
The Agrothrive is fish + corn steep liquor, so you get a more diverse nutrient source with it. Good to hear you're liking it.

Love starting my mornings with a video from Lazy Dog Farm. Great job Travis! I was just wondering about the fish under the tomato experiment, not sure how it would break down that fast to actually benefit the plant.
Yeah that's always been my thought process as well. But we shall see if anything changes with that plant over the next couple months.
It may not be the fish itself fertilizing. It could be the microbial level will rise. Or it could be the moisture from the fish breaking down.
Or it could be it does fertilize it. As long as it works lol

My Pantheon zucchini have already started to produce. They have a nice load of squash, much better than other heirloom Italian zucchini I grew last year. In fact, one plant has outpaced what 2 did the entire season, and it's only been producing a week or so.
Just picked a few Supremo cukes, too. Nice shape and vigor on those, too.
My tallest tomato here in south Arkansas is Omar's Lebanese and Old German. The biggest fruit so far is Abe Lincoln, but I'm single stemming that one 😉
. Some varieties are 5' tall already.
I had good success with heirloom tomatoes as far as preventing disease last year by hard pruning.
Our Pantheons are producing very well too. I'm very impressed with that variety and it blows the doors off the heirloom costata romanesca variety.
Thank you for the tour travis! Question, when I plant my corn, I water the seeds right then. Then how often after that until they pop up? Everyday or once a week or what?. just planted them Sunday and getting ready to plant more in another plot. If you're overhead watering them, I would water them every day until they germinated. With my drip system, I run the water until the entire length of the row is sufficiently soaked.

We did do a video back in the winter months about why we were putting straw on our garlic. And that was to keep the soil cooler in the spring, delay the harvest a bit, and hopefully produce larger bulbs. Seems to be working well at this point. We liked it so much on the garlic that we used it on a few other things in the spring garden this year.

@@LazyDogFarm ain’t no laughing 😂 just teaching and learning… you should have seen the mess I had going on last year😂😂they came to see my patch and asked what vine pattern I had and I told them it was a brand new one I just designed called some here and some there😂 I had vines going backwards like a spider and some swept forward like a pitchfork and others out like the Christmas tree. To this day they still scratch their heads wanting to know how it hit over 1,000lbs on the two biggest ones growing like they did.

Beautiful gardens I wish I had the space you have. I have some young squash plants that the leaves are getting brown spots on the leaves and around the edges of the leaves. I put 10-10-10 and bone meal in the soil before planting and I have put down miracle grow and liquid fish mixed with water twice and the brown spots started showing up a few days after the last treatment. I don’t know if I’m over watering or using the wrong fertilizer but I have never had this problem before. Any advice would be greatly appreciated… Thank You
Sounds like some type of disease (fungal or viral), not a fertility issue.

Question for you: I only have about 110 gallons of rain water on hand. I’m afraid this won’t last very long in a drip system, especially if I use it daily. Metro city water would be my only other option. 👎 What do you think I need to add to knock the edge off of that water? Could I inject something, maybe along with a fertilizer? I’ll take anything you got to offer here. Thx. Have a good one.
I've never dealt with using "city water" in a garden, but I would imagine the chlorine could be an issue. Not sure what you could do besides add some kind of filter or softener to remove the chemicals.
Hey Terry...the Hoss connection is no longer operative although Greg does show his own gardening techniques to promote his products. This vlog is straight up Lazy Dog Farm. I've read that city water chlorine can have a detrimental effect on seed germination though I've never had that issue. There are filters on the market to deal with chlorine but they're spendy and really limit the amount of water you will be able to supply. I bought one a couple of years back but no longer use it. You'll want to pressurize your rainwater delivery or just use the city supply.
What is the variety of Kale are you growing in the video that just keeps going? The Curly leaf stuff. I'm in the same zone and would love to give that a try this fall.
That variety is called "Darkibor." We got it from Johnny's Seeds.

My okra is about 8 inches tall and noticed today that they are starting to form pods would it be a good idea to pick them off to let the plants get taller or just let the pods form

The wind here is killing me. It's been blowing HARD for 3 days and wont lay out till tomorrow. 40 plus mph gusts... besides the wind damage, my peppers are looking pretty rough. First time I've struggled with peppers. They're small and already flowering hard, I've plucked flowers off hard as I can go and some are just now starting to hit a growth spurt. I have a lot of garden space opening up soon and cant decide on what to plant...
Wind is always rough on the garden. We dealt with it pretty bad a few weeks ago, but it has thankfully subsided a bit.

when you say "we usually would have side dressed these" is that something you do based on the appearance of the plants, then? What are the visual cues to tell me to side dress?
Yes. If the corn leaves look nice and dark green, that usually means it's happy.
My corn turned bright lime green.
I used a giant salt shaker full of chicken poo.
I applied a lot of water to the corn for 3 days.
The corn took 3 days of water and turned very dark green.
Tasted very sweet.
What do you use on top of your t posts for the string setup?

Have you done a how to on drip tape.? I've never used it only drip tube and drip piping with emitters. How long does drip tape last? Do you reuse it the next year? Farmers around here use it but it's only one use per crop the is disposed of. Do you have them on automatic timer control and if so are your different crops in individual valves or are many if them interconnected?
Yeah we have quite a few videos on our channel of our different irrigation systems. We also have several blogs on our website (lazydogfarm.com) breaking down all the pieces. Drip tape comes in different thicknesses (mainly 8 mil and 15 mil). The 8 mil tape will usually last a couple seasons while the 15 mil tape lasts longer. We reuse ours quite a bit. I don't use an automatic timer because we have so many different plots. I use move the hose from plot to plot to connect to a different drip system for each particular plot.
@@LazyDogFarm it gets so hot and dry here in central CA if you miss a single day it could ruin some crops. Since I have put mine on a timed control I've had much greater success. Mind you mine is only a 15x 30 ft space. I find drip tubing with emitters doesn't work in my raised beds because the water doesn't spread. So it might be soaking wet in a 3" diameter but dry as a bone beyond that. I have to hand water still. I've added my home compost into it to help with water retention. I may just have to put micro sprays to cover the whole bed. I have Vegega 8x2x16" raised beds. How is drip tape different and why do you choose to use it?

i wonder if your hoss nitrogen microbes might help corn with a little boost of nitrogen they make.. respectfully..cool video those yellow squashes are really good we cut them in half hallow out the middle butter it up and fill the hole with maple syrup bake them at 350 on a rack till you poke a tooth pick through... emmmmmmm wooooo weeeeee

Evaporation isn't a huge issue when using subsurface drip tape. We're putting water right at the roots. Also, when the corn is done, we'll plant a cover crop there and let our chickens craze it. Hard to plant a cover crop with something covering the soil.
Do you prune the suckers out on your cucumbers or just let them grow crazy?
I just let them go and train the stray vines back onto the trellis if necessary.

I use a dual capsule mic and sometimes the volume can vary a little bit depending on whether I'm behind or in front of the camera. It's a necessary evil with my shooting style. You won't ever notice it if watching on a phone, but you can tell a difference on headphones.

Can indeterminate tomatoes be grown in the fall zone 8a?
Maybe. I think you'd probably have to plant around the end of July or late August to make it work. I'd personally go with determinates for a fall planting because they can handle the heat and pest pressure better that time of year.
The sweet taters would probably like the straw to be left I would bet
It probably wouldn't hurt anything, but we do like to hill our sweet taters which is tougher to do with straw around the plants.

You can grind it and use it for corn meal.
Your dead tomatoes look like they might have gone down to bacterial wilt. I've lost a tomato or potato just about every week since the nights got warm.
That's most likely the cause since I didn't see any signs of the typical viruses we get around here. Bacterial wilt is the one thing that can take down a plant with a quickness like that.

No we have plenty. But using the cover crops and the chicken tractor does help reduce our weed pressure significantly. Tarping helps too.
