Monster Party is a video game for the NES, released in the U.S. in 1989 by Bandai. It was and remains a relatively obscure platform game for the console, having a small following among some players. As stupid as it sounds
In his defense, Mark's bat can reflect projectiles. Like the ones the final boss uses. We've also only recently discovered that the bat has no I-frames if you keep it extended.
@@GoldKnightProduction The final boss is next to impossible as Bert. Mark can take him down almost effortlessly if you're good at reflecting stuff.
I played this as a little kid, and I'm pretty sure it mildly traumatized me by the end. It was worth.

I played it when I was much younger as well, and I have this...strange, odd feeling/memory of it. I just stumbled across a review, going over old NES games I like, and the second I saw the guitar guy, and the legs from lvl 1 I got this strange ass nostalgic feeling
It's like I can remember everything perfectly, but nothing clearly at the same time...
I think it traumatized all of us who played it. I must have been 5 years old when my parents bought it.

And the lessons of the story:
* Never go with strange monsters to fight other monsters.
* Never go fight monsters without a bat.
* Never open black boxes given to you by strange monsters. :)

I have a faint memory of playing this with my dad when I was 4 or 5. All I could remember was a kid with a bat and a big purple plant. Finally Googled that and this video showed up. It's cool to see what game it was after all these years!

When I was a kid I played this and I drew a remake for the Super Nintendo on my computer complete with level maps. That’s how much potential I felt this game had.

The second part of the first level was WAY disturbing. I can't believe that Nintendo had it back in the old day. What was more surprising, though, is that my super religious back in the day family allowed us to play it. The only words for that ending is WTF!?!?!?!?
I persistently believed as a kid that there was a "good" ending to the game where you wouldn't get the monsters-in-the-box at the end, and I was convinced beyond all reason that you had to avoid turning level 1 all evil to get it.

Thank you for making this. I could never beat this game as a kid, but I always loved the absurd, creepy style of it. I got a little worried in rounds 4 and 5, but you pulled through! Wow what an ending. Glad I finally got to see the whole game.

True, that could very well be the reason.
I rented this game when I was 11 and had to call the Nintendo Power hotline for the zombie boss. I remember telling the guy who helped me, "that doesn't make any sense" when he told me to just stay still. Still can't believe that.
This game comes across as a morbid fever dream Mark concocted to help him rationalize the horrors of getting into Bert's van.

It is 4:32 in the morning n it hit me for some strange reason monster party. God how miss the good old days. I will burn this game day after day wow thank you monster party for being part of my child hood. A good classic never goes out of style 👍

One of my last NES carts I bought in 1989 before I got my Sega Genesis Sept 1989. What I remember from the game was a blast, but alot of cheap shots, I remember that too.

wow i don't remember getting past the first 13 minutes of this. i think i vaguely remember the minoataur boss. I think I got more bosses than u did on this run though most of the time....i remember alot of bosses being random occurances. I spent days and days playing this and only got 13 mins in...kinda fucked up but this was hard back then.

So I was browsing the eshop on switch just now and came across a preorder for a game called RAD. This is not a coincidence. I believe it is a modern retelling of this. Bandai Namco is even heading publisher duties. Double Fine developed it. I still have my copy of the Nes Monster Party I bought from Caldors in 1991. These were the only horror games that we had then. This, Dr. Chaos from FCI/Pony, Friday the 13th and a few others. No Dead Space, no Resident Evil. Just these gems. I can imagine young people now looking at this and saying how is this scary? Well, it was, trust me. Anyway, check RAD out. You tell me.
Monster Party was the first game I played after we beat Zelda. It has a special place in my heart. So after reading your comment I looked up RAD... kid with a bat, generated levels so i could ply approximately for ever? Hell yes I'm about to buy it! Here's hoping there are some goddamn fried fish monsters so I can cheer and curse and pass the controller to someone while I massage my thumbs. azforu29 The cursing through many MANY attempts at the first level is authentic as hell 😹 so far we are enjoying it, laughing etc. Totally worth the $15 plus $3 or whatever it cost for the dlc ❤️

This is one game I never understood how they got away with what they did. Nintendo of America was quite strict with content back then. The purple head backgrounds in the first level are the second most disturbing thing on the NES (after the microwavable hamster in Maniac Mansion).
Doesn't one of the bosses say "Entrance to Hell"? I'm honestly surprised Nintendo let them get away with so much.
