I thought in the UAB the d line was totally out of sync. Is there a chance our O line can make that kind of improvement or is this on the QB not making the right read?

Unfortunately I know we have some very good assistance coaches. If you believe this as I do, the only other answer is being able to get the players that has played and practiced together and learned strengths and weaknesses. And that means keeping players OUT of transfer portal and at home. And plugging holes with experience. Most of these players have played 4 games together.

If fans really want to see how Petrino's offense is supposed to work, go back and watch replays of games in his last year as head coach at AR and how Tyler Wilson ran it. No one can watch those games and tell me TW always had great protection. He didn't. He got hit A LOT. BUT, he could quickly go through progressions and usually hit the open guy whether it was his 2nd or even 3rd read. Green's problem is if his first read (usually Armstrong) isn't open, he's ready to run because he doesn't want to get hit. I get it. I wouldn't want to get hit either. But as an SEC QB, you've got to be willing to take a hit if it means hitting the open 2nd or 3rd read. A lot of times that short crossing route that seems to be a part of most of Petrino's pass plays is open and if accurate with the throw, it's gonna gain yards (against man to man). Same with check downs to RBs.

I was glad to see CBP come back. I figured there would be significant improvement on offense, but I’ve about decided there is too much roster instability in college football anymore to go with that much of a pre snap read offense. KJ couldn’t do it and Green is struggling with it. There’s just too much there to learn for today’s plug and play world. Kendall Briles had the perfect offense for us. Very little pre snap, heavy use of RPO and tempo. It’s an offense that’s easy to learn and helps under talented teams over achieve, similar to the old triple option. I think Green would thrive in that offense.

I think Petrino should be reading the defense for Taylen and reminding him of the read progression. You would think he'd be just going not 1, not 2 OK throw it to three. I think Taylen may just be expecting instant pressure and running for his life. Don't think this gets fixed.

The problem that I seen with the run game was that it was based off of a read most of the time instead of just lining up and running it at them. With a bad O line and a QB that makes slow decisions reads just don't workout very well.

  • @beatleblev
    @beatleblev 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

The portal can help the Hogs at offensive skill positions and defense, but I don't know how much real help the portal can provide on the offensive line. So much of that position is about coordination with the other four linemen and having a good feel for what your QB is going to do in any given situation. Lines who have had two or three years together as a unit have a major advantage to a portal made patchwork O-line. One need only look at last year's basketball team to know that you can have five 4* and 5* players on the field (or court) at the same time and still fail miserably because no one is playing together. It was my assumption that OL would not be a problem with the Pit Boss but maybe he needs to step in if the line coach is not getting it done on the field, in the classroom, or on the recruiting trail.

Talen’s accuracy is our biggest problem. Yes protection is an issue, but he constantly throws behind his receivers. His receivers have to stop and catch the ball and many times after reach behind them to catch it. He leaves his receivers hanging out to dry over the middle, this causes injuries. It causes interceptions, it causes drop balls. And ultimately, you lose the game because the ball is delivered late and behind the receiver most of the time. He can throw the long ball because the receivers have time to run underneath the wall and adjust to the wall. Many of our problems would be solved with accuracy.

If I could make a suggestion, hopefully constructive, I would ask you to introduce yourself at the beginning of every podcast like you used to do. "Hi, I'm D.J. Williams," ought to be enough for even remotely knowledgeable fans of a certain age. In all fairness, a lot more people know your name than recognize your face. I've been a Razorbacks fan for a long time, and I don't ever remember seeing you on TV with your helmet off, and when I saw the number "45," what I remember seeing was usually the back of you carrying the football toward the goal line.
There are also lots of other fans who are too young to remember those great days with those great players, and, if they have your last name, they can at least look up who you are.
Considering that any yahoo with a video camera and a microphone can start a TH-cam channel--and, man, do they!--I believe that temporarily less-informed fans may need a little help to differentiate between the yahoos and someone (you) who has the gravitas to present podcasts head-on backed up by experience and insight.

I feel bad for people with low football IQ. They’re usually the loudest ones with positivity and negativity. I believe it’s both a coaching and talent problem. Though I do think the new O-line coach is decent, it is only his first year. But Taylen running away from clean pockets and running away from his WRs to the opposite side of the field is bad. Just horrible. He’s missing Teslaa WAY too much, Sategna was open on four plays and just completely missed the read. Taylen has been decent with reads this year but it’s obvious he’s getting rattled with bigger competition. We saw some of it in the Auburn game, it truly exposed itself in Arlington. This is not an SEC ready guy in Green but Singleton is obviously not ready either. The biggest issue imo is recruiting. There isn’t enough SEC level talent on this team period. They’ve been 10-12 in SEC recruiting rankings with Pittman and now with Texas Oklahoma, we’re even lower. We can’t recruit and therefore cannot win games in this league.

DJ...I have been a fan since you were the best TE in the country playing on great Razorback teams. I have followed your TV career since you started as well and truly appreciate these podcasts. BUT...we have a large segment of our fan base that are sharks circling in the water the past two yrs and you (and I don't think intentionally) are throwing them raw meat. I love your film breakdowns but you're throwing kids under the bus and as a former coach of 25 yrs, I have to object. Honest question...if a former player from 2000 had a podcast in 2010 and was showing film breakdowns of all the missed assignments, or Mallet's poor reads that resulted in those INTs against Bama and Ohio St, the D getting shredded by Cam Newton...how would Coach Petrino felt about that? His head would have exploded!
You consistently say there are plenty of good plays you could show but the mistakes are the ones we want to see. You're half right. I want to see your breakdowns of those mistakes but I also firmly believe the fans who watch your show should see the perfectly executed assignments as well. If you're going to call out the RT, show the fans he can do the job - I've seen him execute and know he is capable (and respectfully, your anecdote re. his NIL comment was out of line because I heard a completely different and reliable quote back in Dec when he transferred in). If you're going to show the QB ignore wide open receivers, show him checking down to his 2nd option and delivering a good throw.
We have the potential to be a good team and have half a season left to prove it. But we've got too many "fans" who are openly anxious for us to lose so they can get their wish to fire Coach Pittman. Again, I don't believe for a second you are doing it intentionally, but instead of red meat, throw your audience a little medium well to go along with the red. That's not being dishonest or drinking kool-aid. It's giving a more nuanced look.
It's been 11 yrs since we retired back to Fayetteville, our alma mater, and our Hogs. We've had 3 Head Coaches since we returned. We can't keep starting over. If Sam goes, so does Bobby and T Will and we won't be hiring the football equivalent of Calipari. Coach Pittman is recruiting kids who want to be here and has what I believe to be a great coaching staff. But those who want Pittman gone are on the verge of getting their wish and next season will be another restart.
Hope you take this in the spirit it's offered.

To improve, it's more important to identify and work on the negatives, not just the things you do well. In addition, fans have the RIGHT and the NEED to know what's actually going on--and D.J. provides that better than anyone else. And, whether you agree with the focus of the content or not, the factual information actually cuts down on the frustration factor that drives so many fans to think and say really irrational things.

Knowledgeable and factual analysis, even--and especially--negative material, tends to keep fans on a logical, factual mental and emotional track of considering the actual problems, such as, "Our quarterback needs to make reads faster and throw more accurately," instead of going irrational and screaming, "Fire Pittman!", "Fire the whole coaching staff!", "Fire Yurachek!", "Bench Taylen Green!", or "I ain't supportin' the Hogs no more!"
Oh, and if you don't think fans can do anything to change the course of a football program, walk into a half-empty football stadium at game time or talk to the people trying to get fans' financial support for the Arkansas Edge program.

Throwing "kids" under the bus? The kids making more money than most of us out here for playing a game? It's a different world now former coach. And if last years home games didn't prove to you that Sam is not the man for the job, then I don't know what else to say. WPS
