- Here are 2 examples of flat stitching used in native American beadwork. First example is one needle flat stitch. Second example is 2 needle flat stitch. These are techniques I've acquired over the years and there is no one right way. Which ever way suits you is the best method. This video is for beaders familiar with beading but looking for some extra tips😉 follow me @ Spottedcloud on Instagram

Yes I am beading on top of paper. It does not rip away afterward. It's forever underneath the beadwork.

My parents used to bead and tried teaching me when I was younger. I thought it was so stupid and I hated being Indigenous but, now I wish I had listened them and learned how to.. now I'm in my 20's trying to relearn my culture, so thank you so much for uploading this ❤

it's been difficult for me to find someone to teach me this beading technique, since i live off rez away from elders and the side of my family that's traditional. i've always wanted to learn though, so i thank you for finally allowing me to connect with that part of myself and my people. the ancestors are smiling at me!

I am so happy I am able to learn this technique! My great grandmother used to bead all her own regalia, but never taught the family how to do it. Now, I am able to keep this art alive in my family and possibly share it with my children. Wado!!

Once again, super glad I came across this I've went by a few that either seemed to not really care about their beading techniques or they pinned it down every six beads. I love tight beads and no one likes loose beadwork! Keep up the good work! 💗
I want to thank you for sharing your knowledge in a way that gave me the confidence to finally try the 2 needle flat stitch. It seems like forever that I've said I was going to learn, but I kept putting it off. I'm just beginning and am finding straight lines difficult, and am still trying to figure out the tension tricks, but I can see a huge improvement in my stitches that are curved.

I didn't know there was a one needle way to flat stitch until a couple years ago. I have not seen it done until your video. I was taught with the 2 needle stitch and it's the only way that makes sense to me. But for those that prefer one stitch, good for you! You have talent!! I couldn't do that stitch if I tried. Hello, first thank you for making these videos and showing us how to do this technique. I'm the opposite of you on the 1 needle vs 2 needle. I have tried the 2 needle and feel like I just don't have control. Thank you for showing both methods. Maybe if I do 2 needle more I will get used to it. Would love to see more videos from you showing different patterns and how to do them. I just stumbled across your page. I'm super excited. This is what I have been looking for. i like tacking the front of the thread that’s holding the beads, because then i don’t have to hold it the whole time, and then i can just bead forward and make adjustments as i’m going (if my design has a curve), and it makes the process go by faster. plus every other pair of beads you do, you can give your beading thread a tug to keep the tension tight

I have a tip for you. Try drawing your design on the felt with a flexion pen. It is removed with either heat from a low iron or water. I use it for quilting and embroidery it’s amazing. Then you wouldn’t have to sew through paper which is really hard on your needles and thread.

Nyeh weh for the tips I've never done the 1 needle stitch like that I'm sure it would come in handy for some things tho. I am just getting back into beading again I was wondering if my thread was too thick for tacking down it is size D but I wasn't sure if a single thread would be strong enough. Good tips ! 💜🐻
It might be, depending on size of beads. If your using smaller beads it will be difficult. But if your beads are 11s should be fine.

What is the best way.Or is there a best way of beading inside a leaf pattern. Sometimes, the inside of my leafs don't look right because the beads sort of bind,or gap due to the tight space. I basically use 11/0 beads. Thanks.
Brown Yes I'd suggest checking our Pintrest, just kinda look at the diffrent variations on how beaders fill a leaf. Woodland beadwork has lots of leafs to look at. When I'm stuck on how to do something I just look at diffrent ways to thst others beaders handled it then adjust my beadwork. Hope this helps, happy beading.

I do a lot of single needle beading. My question is, I am working on a piece of suede that is not smooth across the top or the bottom. I thought it would be a good idea to use c-lon thread. However, the thread is a little thicker then I like using 11/0 beads.What nymo thread would you suggest.I want the thread to be strong. But not too thick. Would nymo B or D work. Thanks.
Brown Yes Hi! Yes a size B would be good to use if its doubled up, if your doing single stitch and running the thread through twice then it's should stabilize the beads good. 😉

A tip for beginners - every time you set your beading needle down while beading make sure to do so mindfully. Take an extra second and make a mental note of exactly where you placed it. A beading needle looks like a strand of human hair - you can drop one on a hardwood floor and not hear a sound and it's no fun to find one sticking our of your foot or the pad of your thumb!
and then , when it is all done, how to attach this to leather or to a baseball cap ?

How do you keep your paper pattern to stay lined up correctly on your backing? It seems like it would be hard to keep it from shifting out of place. I am going to try it but am a bit concerned about that. Thank you.
Aura Wright I dab some glue around the outer edges, just a few dabs in key places. Let it dry then once you get some beads down it keeps in place.
Mona C. Thank you! I am getting ready start one and want to try using a paper pattern so I will put a spot of glue in a few places. Last time I drew the pattern on the stabilizer with a pencil, but the paper works well for you so I want to try it. My great-grandmother taught me how to bead.. but it wasn't earrings we beaded. It was moccasin vamps and this is the same concept - but instead of glue, she would sew the paper all around the design. Not right on the design but around where the extra material is. After it was all done, we would rip off the thread and paper. I noticed people have their own ways and this was hers. I enjoy learning new ways 😊👍

Awesome! Its paper over a hard felt. Like Pellon stabalizer or a stiff felt

That's hard work ,Pretty neat though. Serious talent .I myself would use super glue if I did that .
ya right Hi! Yes it would be easier to glue but these are made for regalia and go through a lot of wear and tear, hence the tacking down. It makes the beadwork very strong and can withstand the dancer and all the dancing.

Yes I do usually bead outline and fill in. Unless it's a round medallion in which I will start from the inside and work my way out
