The HDR makes all the difference, rather than the saturated bluray or luminance squeezed DVD version, the 4k version looks like it was shot yesterday, the skin tones are spot on as are the wonderful 1930s cellulose plants on the set. The film grain is epic, not surprising given that it is three negatives combined, but on the plus side, the level of detail is amazing too, even down to the weave of Dorothy's dress or the hairs of the Lion's costume.

You forgot the massive catalog of Universal and ESPECIALLY MGM! They may not be pushing the 4K new transfers as well as Warner. But the catalogs are most definitely there! With Sony pushing the optical drive on PS5, I think we will see the 4K library heat up a lot!
But they will make you install the entire game on the hard drive. Which say to me, this will very likely be the last optical drive in a Playstation!

    • @blessredy

That is not true. You won't have to install entire games on the PS5. You only have to install parts of the game that you want. For example if you only want to play Multiplayer then you can install only that. Or if you only want to install a single player campaign then you can do that.

Other Powell and Pressburger films from that era would also be great with 4K/HDR such as The Red Shoes, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, and A Matter of Life and Death.
In black and white, I would like to see The Third Man and Odd Man Out by Carol Reed in 4K. Also The Sweet Smell of Success by Alexander Mackendrick. All three films have amazing black and white cinematography and amazing city scenes at night.

What does the age of the film have to do with the quality of the transfer? Once the film was cleaned for the first transfer, it just needs to be rescanned every few years. The only thing here that is amazing in how they converted a mono track into 7.1 sound.
Film if stored properly can last hundreds of years and IB Technicolor which this movie was shot on, was and is one of the best film types to be created.

      Hi Andy:
My Tech print of "The Wizard Of Oz" is in the 16mm format. When Technicolor closed up in Burbank a film editor friend of mine found many brand new Technicolor films that had been in storage for many many years. They had not even been assembled yet. I bought a lab mint print of "Thunderball" in Technicolor and Scope for close to 3K. Also I have a print of "The Sound Of Music" in Scope. It's a beautiful print. At the time that was 1.5K which is not bad at all for this type of print. Also I have many other IB Tech prints of favorite Jerry Lewis films I like so much. Film is indeed the best. The color is really Technicolor and not "electronic" color. I like low fade stocks too like Kodak LPP. I am trying to locate a low fade print of "On Golden Pond" . The 35mm and 16mm theatricals were struck on Kodak SP and the color has shifted. Kodak SP is a slight bit better than eastmanolor film stock. But I want either an LPP print of "On Golden Pond" or Agfa 1S or 2S or later Fuji 'low fade" film stock. I collect video since it is so inexpensive. I collected laservision years back.

Things that weren't filmed in 4k aren't going to see any real benefits from being upscaled. 1080p is the way to go with most films and then you should only buy 4k films that were filmed in 4k.

@@JeffRauseo I'll give it a watch, but the problem with upscaling is that you can't add extra detail to the picture, most people won't see any actual difference between 1080 vs upscaled to 4k. Maybe a bit of overall smoothness to the picture but it's incredibly hard to notice anything unless your vision is phenomenal. I'm all for 4k content, but I don't see enough of a difference to invest in upgrading my blu ray collection to 4k.

I would maybe support fixing Dorothy’s hair changing so drastically. I noticed that at 5yrs old. And ever since. The most noticeable flaw for a hairdresser and wigmaker. Her blonde wig looked so unnatural. Around the ears. Yuck. And the bright auburn natural hair against her added curls at the ends, never saw that on tv until the DVDs. But they are off color wise. And the lions lace front wig and beard glare at me from the clear giant picture of today.

Hey, I have a question. I just received my Best Buy exclusive 4K, but currently I do not own a 4K Blu-ray player, only a 4K TV. I used my code to redeem on Movies Anywhere and streamed it. I was shocked to find that it was nowhere near the regular Blu-ray version. Infact, when Warner slipper back in September and updated iTunes purchased HD past purchased versions to UHD, it looked marvelous! Anyway, my question is, since I redeemed the code on Movies Anywhere and it did upgrade to 4K, since tomorrow is the “official release” will my iTunes version be automatically upgraded? I’ve heard rumors that iTunes automatically upgrade... I also have a purchased HD version on Amazon Prime. Would that upgrade too? Thank you for sharing your video!!
