It's been almost 30 years since passenger cars came with a carburetor, but the hundred years before that was nearly all carburetors. From 1965 to 1990, the standard-issue 4-barrel carburetor on all GM products was the Rochester Quadrajet. We have set out on an adventure with a 3-part series to Disassemble, Rebuild, and Tune a Rochester Quadrajet on a 1971 Oldsmobile 442.
Let the sneering, name calling and hatred fly, so we can get it out of the way. Everyone has their favorites: Holley, Carter, Quadrajet, Edelbrock and more. Truth is, they all have the drawbacks and their benefits. For the sake of time, we're just going to get on with the facts.
We will try to keep our segments to 5-6 minutes and still cover everything needed. Everything will be shot in HD as well. This first part will cover removal and disassembly of the Rochester Quadrajet. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ

...there is NOTHING wrong with a carburetor as long as it is in good mechanical condition, clean, and set correctly...easy starting, smooth idling, and smooth acceleration...and NO sensors or electronics needed!...

@@Shoptoolreviews ..yes, and the fact that so many guys messing with them grew up in the age of fuel injection, and ironically, are afraid of or are suspicious of anything they are not used to...much like us older guys were/are uncomfortable with something we didn't grow up with, like fuel injection and it's electronics...
Hi, this is really great video, I had a problem with my 1978 Camaro, engine was back firing and was not very powerfull. I rebuilt my Rochester and problems are solved, backfiring was caused by malfunctioning mechanical blocking of secondary flaps.

Do you clean the carburetor body with acid or some other solution?
You skipped steps, such as the choke thermostat housing. If you don’t show all the steps you’re setting people up for failure.🤷🏼♂️ bad form.
I have a Rochester Quadrajet 1708272 in my 80 firebird 301. It looks like I can do this but I am nervous. It would save a bunch of money.
You can do it. Take your time, and take pictures. spread your parts and fasteners out on a large surface. You probably have an electric choke and maybe even electric fast-idle solenoid. Internals should be the same.
I was going to watch the jet video people who make rebuild kits and I sure hope they rebuild kits aren’t anything like their videos some of the most annoying music played in 5X @850 miles an hour who knows maybe they’re on meth I don’t even know why they wasted their time putting that on the web

I have a bone stock ALL orig 87 SS ElCamino 305( odometer only on its first roll over,107,000 orig miles). Just Had the orig carb rebuilt, when it came back it ran great but engine light comes on. My carb guy said further down(?) on carb he didn’t get a chance to change out an electronic connection. He didn’t charge me, but have no idea what he was talking about. Do you have any clue what he might mean? Thank you
Is he talking about the electronic choke? Or, in 1987, it had an electronic solenoid that I'm pretty sure was used in enriching with more fuel on startup. Thanks for watching.

What happened to the spring below the primary metering rods? Its in the hole. Gas will overflow if not put back in.
Have off topic question on the Rochesters.
In your experience, How can it be positively proven the Rochester stampings are factory authentic?
I have Rochesters from the 67-69 Pontiac cars.
Some stampings look different, one die stamp seems narrow and others are Heavier.
I know the old scam trick to grind a number off and re-stamp these to create a value and a market..
Not sure what time era Carter was involved in these OEM type carbs for the workload to assist.
I'm not knowing for certain if different plants used a different die set in the Rochester MFG or not.
So the issue is which ones are OEM correct stamped, which ones are re-stamp phony pieces?
Any insight on how to tell these?

I know that the different GM cousins (Chevy, Olds, Pontiac, Buick) received different Rochester Quads on their cars...specifically, the muscle cars. And, the higher horsepower cars (LS6, W30, etc.) also received different Quadrajets, specific to the platform. This is where my knowledge gets a bit muddy. I understand the internals and how they work, but I don't know the different casting numbers off the top of my head. I know there are guys out on the muscle car forums that do have more knowledge on the castings. Sorry that I couldn't help you.
I removed my carburetor. My question is if the inside of my manifold is dirty/caked how or should I clean it out? Will I have to remove manifold completely?
Typically, just fuel should t make the inside of the intake too dirty. If you have a lot of oil residue then you have other issues.
what happens when the well plugs at the base of the carb are stripped of their outer protective layer?
Elijah Lueras you need to scuff the area really good, wipe down with lacquer thinner or a good degreaser. Apply 2-part epoxy, such as JB Weld over the area. be sure to test for leaks after.

Hi - I'm starting to work on a 65 cutlass with a 4bbl quadrajet and 330ci motor. it's been sitting forever. I am trying to remove the carb but it seems stuck to the manifold. Looking for advice on how to get it off. I removed the four carb bolts, disconnected the fuel line, linkage, vacuum line and choke inlet "thing". Any suggestions? Thanks!
EDIT: I was able to get the carb off the manifold with a little gentle persuasion using a rubber mallet. Now to figure out getting the stuck gasket off the manifold.
Very good video! I need some advice on something. I recently bought an 1986 chevy truck with a V6 4.3. It has a propane system on it and the original carburetor is no where to be found. I have a 78 quadrajet that I just rebuilt and would like to install it. the truck intake manifold is the original four barrel spreadbore quadrajet carburetor set up. Also this engine has the electronic spark control distributor without the vaccum advance. if I put this 78 carb I got on it do you think it will work just fine?

i was kinda dreading rebuilding this carb, but seeing how simple it is to disassemble, im not nervous anymore haha! heading over to part 2 :)
one thing, you did skip over quite a bit of stuff on the disassmbly. just finished watching the reassmbly video and i noticed there were a lot more parts on the table haha! im good at figuring stuff out, so its not a big deal, i just remember taking apart one of these probably 15 years ago, and damaging it somehow. i didnt want a repeat of that situation, so i was looking for a nice complete guide on proper disassembly. cheers!

But i like these carbs. Always preformed better after a fresh rebuild kit was installed. And a few hole opened a smidge. And soldering up a smaller float.
I just picked up a 74 bonniville with the 400 qudrajet with only 8k original miles. Thank you for this video. My dad isn't around anymore and he was my go to guy. Thank you for the knowledge.
My Dad bought a 70 Impala, back in 72. He drove it for 3 years total. Then he was leaving at dinner time from work in 75 cranked the car and it backfired through the carb, never running right again. He rebuilt the carb a couple times, but still never would idle correctly again. He parked the car after the rebuilding of the carbs, replaced the cam and timing chain and gears and such. No luck...
Could the leak you spoke of, with the primary and or secondary plugs caused the spit back? Secondly what parts of the carb could have been damaged? And or, do you think the plugs perhaps are still leaking and causing the whole idle issues?
The leaking of these plugs are a very common issue, but I'm not sure that was your issue. Backfire issues typically come from timing issues or mechanical-timing (worn timing chain, gear, etc.). If the carb was last rebuilt in the 70s, then it's definitely due for a rebuild again. I would recommend completely disassembling tha carb and look over each part thoroughly. Be sure to clean all gasket surfaces and clear out each air passage. Make sure you have some welding-tip cleaners to fit into the smaller air/fuel passages in the carb.
Once you have the carb done, make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks around the intake. You should have a steady vacuum when the car is idling, unless you have a large cam. Is the Impala a Big Block or Small Block? Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@Shoptoolreviews My Dad was a dealer mechanic. Everything he overhauled or rebuilt was back to factory specs. It is a 350/300hp 4bolt main block. He rebuilt it twice. After putting cam and timing chain in it, he got tired of sinking money into it in 75, so bought a 68 F100, and parked the Impala.
I'm hoping to salvage the 350 and the 350Th from it into a budget s10 project. If there is such thing as a budget s10 project...
The bolts holding it to the manifold are 5/16" not 1/2".

After taking 16 screws out as well as the 2 for the vacuum I cant get the two pieces to come apart, I removed every screw I could possible see that is bolted on to each other, what have I done😂

I've searched this thing up, down, over and under and re-watched the video countless times... but I cannot separate the base plate from the carb. I'm certain I've removed all the screws, but it will not come apart.

What is the point of taking off the arm for the accelerator pump.. Removing the pin.. I don't see the purpose.. When all you need is just to unhook the arm... What am i missing..

What is the model # for your Quadrajet? What solenoid are you talking about?

The float moves freely,, until i put the insert on and apply a little pressure,, to imatate replacing the bowl,, then it doesn't move at all..wtf is my question... And thanks for the reply.. To add its a electronic E4MC or E4ME.. Maybe the float has expanded,, idk..

Any difference from CCC Qjet!
The CCC has a lot of similarities, but I'm not proficient enough to know all the differences. I do know the CCC is a feedback carburetor and that it has electronic solenoids controlling the metering rods.

Want your fuel econemy to go up add a metal screen and a spacer plate with a metal model air plane perpeler just make shure it dont get sucked down the carb
