100% steffi graf is the best woman player. the lack of tactics in the era williams played in lead her to a lot of success. graf played through an era of variety and tactics with similar amounts of success.
@@sultanabran1 Excellently put ! The Williams sisters had raw power, but little to no tactics. That is why Justine Henin stopped Serena in her prime. Her team came up with tactics to confuse Serena and not allow her to get in a comfortable position to whack the ball. Henin's team tactics plan was first tried in the 2003 Charleston final. It worked, in that Justine beat Serena in straights, thus snapping Serena's winning streak in 2003. Serena, in typical unsportsmanlike fashion, discounted the loss by declaring: " I lose only when I play bad ". Such lack of respect fired up Justine for the French Open. Indeed Justine outplayed/outsmarted Serena in the 3rd set and snapped Serena Slam-match winning streak. It was a glorious victory for the GAME of tennis ! Moving forward to 2019, Simona Halep, whose role model is Justine, employed similar tactics to beat Serena in straights in the Wimbledon final.
This is a match where Serena allowed the crowd to overwhelm her, in her later years she was able to us it to push her forward but here she crumbled a bit in the end.
the crowd was warm to her initially & .both of her complains wouldn't have affected her game if she just let it go..she should have known from the Hings debucle, that the RG crowd don't like complains even if you're right...she could have won that game.
I'm pretty certain it was a small Belgian won who 'overwhelmed' her, not the crowd. She played brilliantly for much of the match. It came down to just a few extra moments from Henin, esp. defensively. Anyone who wins 23 majors isn't letting the crowd cause them to lose this far into their pro career.
I suspect the pressure got to Serena too. She was going for her 5th grand slam in a row here and I think she was pretty frazzled. She only won 3 of the next 16 grand slams.
Henin beat her at 3 different slams in 2007, and she won 2 of those slams. It was a good rivalry. Henin and Clijsters were the only two "real" rivals that Serena had in her carreer. And by real I mean that they could really be better than her consistently and in big occasions. All the credit for Serena's 2012 resurgence are given to muratoglou, but I think she was able to win a lot after 2012 because there weren't Kim and Justine (at their best) around.
@@milvao3400Better than her on big occasions? Kim beat Serena twice and lost 7 times. She only beat her once at a slam. Henin dominated Serena in 2007 mostly due to Henin playing incredible tennis and Serena not at her best because she barely played tennis in 2006. Both were incredible players, but Serena had other tough rivals like Venus and Capriati who I feel were bigger rivals than Clijsters. But it's clear that Serena at her best is better than all of them at their best except on clay in the case of Justine Henin. Henin is better than Serena on clay. And also they weren't at their best in 2012 because they couldn't compete with the younger players. Their bodies broke down. The fact that Serena could continue to dominate shows she was superior to them.
@@kofipokuantwi-boateng5446 Venus shouldn't count because it's obvious that she's her biggest rival, due to the fact that she's also her sister. Tennis-wise Kim and Justine are the only players who didn't just beat Serena once or twice because they were lucky or because Serena wasn't at her best and/or underestimated them. That's my opinion because I watched the matches. Kim retired early and became a mother, otherwise she would have had more wins vs. Serena for sure.
@milvao3400 There's no guarantee Kim could have won more matches against Serena. She retired in 2007 mainly because of injuries and also a desire to start a family, and that's not Serena's problem. Kim was also losing to the so called weak Era players like Azarenka, Kerber and Laura Robson as well as Sharapova in 2012. I don't see how she was going to be a threat beyond 2012. Her body could no longer handle the demands of tennis. Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters are excellent players, but when Serena is playing at her best and without any injuries she's only vulnerable against Henin on clay. Capriati was a far tougher rival than Clijsters.
one big difference in this match is movement: Serena just cannot come out of the corners and reset in the way that Henin can, Henin growing up on red clay. it is quite jarring to see how frequently Serena is rushed on the forehand, unable to use her normal high and looped takeback and hit with her normal penetration. no-one was doing that to Serena back then: she had so much time on the ball. Henin’s game, with its mix of power, different trajectories, angles and volleying really unsettled Serena - and i can say that as someone that loved Serena’s style and shotmaking. people said so much about ‘the hand’ and there is certain ugliness - bequeathed by the French crowd. however, this match represents the two premier female talents of 2000s professional tennis. don’t overlook the skillset of **both these remarkable players.
Amazing match. Hard to believe this was on the slow French clay since the balls were going so fast! It is a shame Henin retired so early, she could have accomplished so much more.
Back when women's tennis was great. I miss this era of tennis. Such clean striking with beautiful court movement from both players. Henin my absolute favourite female player of all time. Infact she is my favourite tennis player of all te.
What a fantastic match. Henin was such a beautiful athlete to watch. I wish that she would have played longer. You had to vary your attack to beat her. Just trying to go through Henin wasn't going to work. Henin's focus was also excellent. If you were trying to employ any tactics intimidation or otherwise against her she didn't notice.
That hand moment rattled Serena and she couldn’t pull it together because she didn’t expect Justine to use gamesmanship. Even without that moment, Serena might have lost the match but we will never know. The hand moment took away from what might have been an entertaining match. I’m glad that Henin regretted her behavior in this match and apologized to Serena eventually. The crowd was firmly against Serena and the gamesmanship along with the crowd rattled her too much. She was winning until that moment and never found her form again.
The thing is, she doesn't seem particularly rattled by it looking back at the incident. She seems to shrug it off and give an annoyed "whatever" gesture, as if she doesn't want to entertain the stupidity of the moment or something. I don't know, I always felt like the hand incident, while ugly, didn't define the match as much as people think it did. I think it really was the crowd getting into it. Mind you, that's not to excuse Henin for her lack of sportsmanship. I always admired her, but her desperate desire to win at all costs made her look ugly at times.
@@niceguy1774 it was entertaining. I was sad the way Serena lost because it was a quality match. Far better than the matches we see these days in the WTA. Just wish the cheat moment hadn’t happened. At least Justine admitted and apologized a few years later.
@deedledave9826 Serena had this match. 3-1 up and serving, she played a very loose service game that gave Henin a break and hope. In the crucial moments toward the end of the third set she was a little tentative; Henin took full advantage. Serena was well-versed in gamesmanship; she was no innocent.
Now let's be honest I do believe that Justine is one in a million with a tiny little physique but it packed such a punch and let's not forget about the flawless ground stroking and the impossible backhands that come from nowhere. TBH we have to be sportsman like right at 2-4 in the third she was very unsportsmanlike by putting her hand up and did not own what she did. Let's not forget that we've already seen this with a lot of other players with Serena but I'm just going to call out Justine and Jennifer capriati
Thanks for noticing that, I'm amazed at how unsportsmanlike the crowd is... Is it a racist thing? Henin clearly obstructed, yet the crowd are completely behind her
@@moo6672 Please, stop bringing up racism when it's clearly not the case. The French crowd doesn't like complain and sometimes every crowd misjudge what happens on the court and just start booing, that's what happened. They did the same thing with Hingis vs Graf.
That return at 3:11, nastyyyyyyyyy
Pure power and only Serena could do that in women’s tennis
Yes in her game against Osaka in 2018, she really used the crowd to bully the opponent.
I suspect the pressure got to Serena too. She was going for her 5th grand slam in a row here and I think she was pretty frazzled. She only won 3 of the next 16 grand slams.
Especially since Henin cheated!
The next month she beats Henin 63 63 in Wimbledon.
Sweet revange!!
63 62

BRAVO JUSTINE ! You stopped the bully in her prime with smart play and the most beautiful one-handed backhand.
French Open, by far, has the WORST crowd.
Absolutely
A true CLASSIC match ! Brain over brawn.
one big difference in this match is movement: Serena just cannot come out of the corners and reset in the way that Henin can, Henin growing up on red clay.
it is quite jarring to see how frequently Serena is rushed on the forehand, unable to use her normal high and looped takeback and hit with her normal penetration. no-one was doing that to Serena back then: she had so much time on the ball.
It's pure bliss watching Henin. Are there any one-handed backhands left in women's tennis nowadays? I'm really curious to know.
Diane Parry, Tatjana Maria and Viktorija Golubic

Thank you Vika
Amazing match. Hard to believe this was on the slow French clay since the balls were going so fast! It is a shame Henin retired so early, she could have accomplished so much more.
what an horrible crowd (I'm french)
Back when women's tennis was great. I miss this era of tennis. Such clean striking with beautiful court movement from both players. Henin my absolute favourite female player of all time. Infact she is my favourite tennis player of all te.
Henin brilliant
Partizado, a tremendous match please come back ladies
The backhand of Justine ❤
"Might have been an entertaining match"?
Um...
I would call this match more than entertaining.
@@niceguy1774 it was entertaining. I was sad the way Serena lost because it was a quality match. Far better than the matches we see these days in the WTA. Just wish the cheat moment hadn’t happened. At least Justine admitted and apologized a few years later.
Serena knew a thing or two about gamesmanship; hardly an innocent
Very true
These were real draws!! 🔥
"I'm no Justine" that was the first time Serena thought that
Henin had a good serve she saved lots of break points when it mattered with the serve
👏👏👏🎾❤️ Que de beau souvenir
So many god mode...unbelievable 👍👍👍
I really hate how the crowd wouldn’t even allow Serena to question some of the calls. The crowd would boo Serena for it is quite disgusting behavior.
Thanks for noticing that, I'm amazed at how unsportsmanlike the crowd is...
Is it a racist thing? Henin clearly obstructed, yet the crowd are completely behind her
@@moo6672 It's because Henin was from the French-speaking part of Belgium. Either way, the crowd was poor.
Sareña was always either the victim or bully.
@@moo6672 Please, stop bringing up racism when it's clearly not the case. The French crowd doesn't like complain and sometimes every crowd misjudge what happens on the court and just start booing, that's what happened. They did the same thing with Hingis vs Graf. They were rooting for Henin for the most obvious reasons: she was the underdog, she played classic tennis and Roland Garros was almost like her home slam, since it's close to Belgium and there were probably lots of fans from Belgium up there. This was the worst crowd in women’s grand slam history. Nice job to editing out most of the booing.

Justine retired much too soon.
the only mistake Serena made her was to be scared of the Henin backhand… she literally looked like she was feeding too much the Henin forehad which is an on and off stroke for Justine, some days it’s as explosive as her backhand some days it’s off….
What mistakes you'll make against me! Too many 😊😅😂❤

Phenomenal match. Goes to show, at least in part, how insanely hard it was to get shots past Henin that Williams would try that drop shot at 40-AD in the 9th game of set 3. Thinking maybe she won't expect this and I MIGHT get one she can't get to. But it was Henin- rabbit quick for a tennis player, and the best vollier in the WTA in her time.
Every time SWs opening serve was Slider wide , its infuriating so few players caught on to that
