      Alan, probably had his best official event in 1993!
      But let us all remember that time in East Berlin when he was able to take on all the Soviet strong men/women and win.

  • @WorkClassical
    @WorkClassical 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    As far as the tire height goes I'd say it depends on your height. Imagine the extreme example of a 1000lbs tire the size of a quarter. You lose all your lever arm and it's basically a 1000lbs deadlift. Now imagine the tire is the size of a barn, it'll be easy to break off the ground, but very quickly the tire would be completely on top of you and again decreasing your level arm as you go (kind of like a fingal finger, imagine a 1000lbs fingal finger). So the easiest tire height I would guess is based on your own height, probably around shoulder height.

    • @redjr242
      @redjr242 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since the centre of mass is halfway up the tire, I think it won't actually get easier to initially lift beyond a certain size. As long as one end is planted on the ground, the force required to lift the other end is half the weight of the tire.
      (Edit) Actually, you're right, it would be easier to lift a larger tire in practice, but that's probably due to the material being more flexible the longer it gets, so the centre of mass doesn't rise as quickly. Same reason why it's easier to deadlift with bendier bars.

    • @WorkClassical
      @WorkClassical 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah you're right, as long as you're applying force on the opposite end of the tire it should be the same effort to break it off the ground since the lever of the center of mass scales the same as yours. But I'd still say best to keep the height around shoulder level, anymore you'd probably have to get under the tire a little and decrease the lever arm after you've lifted it some distance.

    • @redjr242
      @redjr242 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WorkClassical Yup, totally agree :)

    • @frederik3286
      @frederik3286 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually your lever arm would increase double the amount of the centre of mass' lever arm, since cm is X/2, yours being X. But I think a tire fitting your mechanics are a lot more important, since that seems to be the practical experience of Alan. As a physicist I find it extremely funny to hear Alan deduce mechanics to a high degree of precision, from just lifting tires 😁

    Everything made pretty good sense, except for the height/width debate. But I think that's because you were using them somewhat interchangeably.
